Antonio Cruz and Felix Vargas are teenage best friends who live and breathe the sport of boxing. They train
together whenever they can and share a good knowledge of the sport and its stars. Their passion for boxing is a
positive element of their lives that has kept them away from gangs and drugs, which are quite common in their
New York City neighborhood.
One day, Antonio and Felix learn that they are set to fight each other in a fight that will determine which of
them goes on to compete in the Golden Gloves—the first step towards a real professional fighting career. Initially,
the two friends pretend that their upcoming fight changes nothing. However, they soon agree that they should
separate until the fight in order to train independently. In addition to physical training, both Antonio and Felix
work to get into the right psychological state to fight their best friend.
On fight night, Tompkins Square Park is filled with cheering fans. Because they know each other so well, Felix
and Antonio are able to counter (还击) each other’s every move throughout the fight. Bong! Bong! Bong! The bell
sounds over and over again. Felix and Antonio are past hearing. Their blows continue to pound on each other like
hailstones (冰雹). Finally the referee and the two trainers pull Felix and Antonio apart. Cold water is poured over
them to bring them back to their senses. They look around and then rush toward each other. A cry of alarm echoes
through Tompkins Square Park. Is this a fight to the death instead of a boxing match? The fear soon gives way to

Books passed down through generations often become treasured possessions, carrying a shared family history.
One person discussed an old hardcover copy of Blinky Bill by Dorothy Wall. Originally given to her father and his
brothers and sisters by their great-aunt in 1961, the book’s pages are now discoloured and falling out.
“Although I always think of my mother as having been my reading role model,” she wrote, “actually my father
had an equally big impact, just in another way.” Her father is a central organizing figure on her home bookshelf:
She has filled a whole shelf with the books he liked.
The story she tells about his old copy of Blinky Bill, however, crosses generations. The book’s state can prove
that it has a long history and it is well-loved. Its inscription (题词) to her family members makes the copy unique
and irreplaceable.
Another person remembered a set of Dickens’ novels, complete with notes and century-old newspaper clipping
(剪报), carefully stored with her most special books. These volumes, initially owned by her great-great-grandmother
and later gifted by her great-aunt, represent a reading bond passed down through generations.
Such books can never be replaced, no matter how many copies might be found in the market. These books are
closely associated with memories and experiences—they are invaluable for who they represent.
A third person has her father’s “old” Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series: He read it to her as a
teenager, then passed it down. The book drew her interest in science-fiction, and she now intends to pass it on to
her own teenager, although it is battered. The cover is falling off.
28.How did the first person’s father influence her?
A. He became her reading role model. B. He passed down a lot of books.
C. He taught her how to read efficiently. D. He instructed her what to read.
29.What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word “battered” in the last paragraph?
A. Worn-out. B. Well-maintained. C. Ill-treated. D. Under-valued.
30.Why are specific books mentioned in the text?
A. To recommend great books. B. To show their academic position.
C. To stress their economic value. D. To prove the truth of the writer’s idea.
31.What suggestion would the writer give us?
A. Read what your ancestors read. B. Display books passed down.
C. Pass on the family reading tradition. D. Treasure the books passed down.
D
“One issue that hasn’t really been examined much is what happens in the here and now—are we happier spending
our money on an experience or on a material item?” says Amit Kumar, assistant professor of marketing at the
高二(上)期末联合检测试卷+答案(英语)第4页 共14页University of Texas at Austin. “The basic finding from a lot of experiments is that people gain more happiness from
their experiences than from their possessions.”
The researchers organized 2,635 adults and randomly assigned them to a material or experiential group. The
participants received random texts during the day to monitor their emotions and their purchasing behavior.
Material purchasers bought things such as jewelry, clothing, or furniture; Experiential shoppers attended
sporting events, dined at restaurants, or engaged in other experiences.
The results: Happiness was higher for participants who consumed experiential purchases versus material ones
in every kind, regardless of the cost of the item.
“It would be unfair to compare a shirt to a trip, but when we explain the reason for price, we still see this result
where experiences are associated with more happiness,” Kumar says.
To address possible differences in types of consumers, the researchers conducted a second study in which they
asked more than 5,000 participants to first rate their happiness and then report whether they had used, enjoyed, or
consumed either a material or experiential purchase within the past hour. If they responded “yes”, researchers asked
participants a series of questions and details about their purchase.
“We still observed the same effect,” Kumar says. “When the very same person was consuming an experience,
that was associated with more happiness.”
The researchers concluded that people are happier with experiential purchases over material ones irrespective
of when you measure happiness: before, during, or after consumption. Experiences also bring more satisfaction even
though people typically spend more time using their material possessions.
The researchers say a possible explanation is the endurance of experiences in people’s memories, while the
perceived value of material goods weakens over time.
32.Why was the second experiment conducted?
A. To expect a different result. B. To have subjects of more varieties.
C. To balance the two groups. D. To have more experiential purchasers.
33.What do the two experiments want to prove?
A. Experiences supply more happiness.
B. Material possessions bring more happiness.
C. Two experiments show different results.
D. Believable results come from more repetitions.
34.What is the possible reason for the result?
A. Happiness from material possessions never stay in the memories.
B. Material possessions can create much less happiness in the mind.
C. Happiness from experiential purchases lasts longer in the memories.
D. Experiential purchases can probably create happiness more quickly.
35.What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Wider Experiences, and more Happiness for You
B. More Money on Purchases and Longer Happiness
C. To Be Happier, Try to Remember more Experiences
D. To Feel Happier, Spend on Experiences not Stuff

Trees Provide Many Additional Benefits
36
Planting trees near your home can reduce the need to run your air conditioner by 30% and lower your heating
bill by 20% to 50%, says the U.S. Forest Service. Shade from trees keeps your house cooler, so you don’t have to run
your air conditioner as much on hot summer days. Trees can also block winter winds that creep into your home
through windows and doors.
Trees can improve your mental health.
A study from The Nature Conservancy found that time in nature around trees correlated with a drop in anxiety
and depression. 37 The solution for the city blues? Nature, specifically trees. Just looking at trees lowers blood
pressure and muscle tension within five minutes, according to a Texas A&M study.
Trees increase health.
Neighborhoods with a high tree density (密度) rate report 25% lower childhood asthma (哮喘) rates, Lambe
says. “Trees filter air pollution particles (颗粒) out of the air we breathe, so they give us cleaner air.” 38
Trees make city areas cooler and safer.
“Trees provide shade, and they cool cities as much as 10°F,” Lambe says. “ 39 ” And get this: a Baltimore
study found that crime decreased in neighborhoods where there were more trees. One might conclude that people
obeyed the law better because wealthier neighborhoods tend to have more trees. The study controlled for that
consideration and adjusted their models for a range of socioeconomic factors. 40
A. Trees make your house greener.
B. Trees can lower your power bill.
C. That can prevent heat-related deaths.
D. Every tree helps, and the benefits add up.
E. Trees still came out as being crime fighters.
F. Studies find people living in the city have higher levels of stress.
G. One study found trees prevented 850 deaths from asthma in a single year.

第二节(满分25分)

Late at night, a large woman is walking alone with a large purse. A young boy runs up and attempts to snatch
the bag, only to fall over. The woman kicks him.
Still firmly holding the boy’s shirtfront, the woman tells him to pick up her now-broken purse and hand it
back to her. She scolds the boy and asks why he tries to rob her, to which he responds, “I didn’t aim to, but I only
wanted to buy a pair of blue suede shoes.” Quickly rejecting this as a lie, the woman asks whether the boy will run
if she lets go of him. He responds yes. The woman then points out the boy’s dirty face and confirms that he doesn’t
have anybody at home telling him to wash it. She declares that she will wash it herself and begins dragging the
“frightened boy” to her own house.
The boy, who looks “as if he were fourteen or fifteen,” is not strong, in tennis shoes and blue jeans. The woman
declares that if he were her “son” she’d teach him “right from wrong” and asks if he’s hungry. The boy only wants
her to let him go, but she reminds him that his actions first put them together. “When I get through with you, sir,”
she says, “you are going to remember Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.”
The young boy continues to struggle uselessly as Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones physically controls him.
She takes him to her room in a boarding house—a small, one-bedroom space equipped with a kitchenette. She asks
the boy for his name: Roger. Telling him to clean up his face, she provides him with warm water and a towel. When
Roger asks if Mrs. Jones will take him to prison, she answers jokingly: “With that face, I would take you nowhere.”
Then, she quickly changes from the conversation to dinner.
