Sometimes children need extra (额外的) help to learn at school. In some schools in England, some
volunteers work with children who have difficulty in reading. The volunteers spend time with them, away
from their class, to help them learn to love books and enjoy school. These children can then become more
confident about school and learning.
Lorna is a 6-year-old student. This is a report from Mrs. Snow who has been visiting her at school.
When I first started working with Lorna, she was very shy and didn’t really enjoy reading. Her class
teacher told me she was very quiet in class.
During our lessons we spent lots of time reading books together. We also played word games to help with
her spelling and writing. As time went on, Lorna began to relax and became more confident. She realized that
reading and writing could be lots of fun.
Lorna even wrote a book by herself about Beauty and the Beast. She also drew some lovely pictures to
explain it.
Her class teacher is pleased with how well Lorna is doing. Lorna proudly tells her classmates about what
she has done in each lesson with me. I think they all want to join in as well!
I’m pleased that Lorna is also spending more time at home reading with her parents. They all enjoy
reading books together! She now even reads to her dog!

Zac and I were always best friends. We both started playing football from an early age. Zac was bigger
than me and it was difficult to score a goal when he was in front of me. I was faster, though. Once I got past
him, he couldn’t catch me.
There were two under-17 teams. The first team was the Springtown Stars. They played the most important
games. The other was the Springtown Asteroids. They were also a good team but not as good as the Stars. Zac
and I were proud to be in the Stars!
It was time for the coach to name the team for the season. Zac’s name was called out but mine wasn’t. I
went to check the list on the board. I could hardly believe my eyes! How could the coach make such a mistake? I
was as good as Zac. What pain I felt! I had lost my place in the Stars.
After that, I had to practise with the Asteroids but I didn’t enjoy it. I played so well, and yet no one
understood this. I began to despise Zac and the coach.
However, one Saturday, I watched the Stars play against another team. I thought they wouldn’t play well
without me, but I was wrong. I began to see that they had great teamwork and skills. Zac was especially good.
He had worked harder than me and was now much better.

My mother is a kind and gentle woman. She is very busy from morning till night. As a teacher she works
diligently and efficiently. As a mother, she takes good care of us and gives us every comfort. I have an elder
brother. He and I both love her dearly and she loves us.

On May 2, the Writers Guild of America(美国编剧协会)called on its 11,500 members to begin a
strike(罢工)in Hollywood, California, and New York City in the US. It is the first writers’ strike in more
than 15 years, causing many new projects to stop.
One big issue behind the WGA strike is the use of AI programs. They said that AI not be allowed to write
or rewrite literary material or be used as source material.
Creative AI programs like ChatGPT can now create human—like literary works. Writers are worried that
media companies might someday use AI instead of people to make scripts(剧本)for movies and TV shows.
This might bring plagiarism problems as AI usually creates scripts based on a writer’ work.
At the same time, using AI to write scripts has a big influence on writers’ pay. As Warren Leight, an
executive producer, said, studios might let AI create a first draft(草稿), then hire people to do a second
draft, which pays less. This makes writers want to “nip that in the bud”.
AI is already being used in the entertainment industry in other ways, such as making actors appear
younger and removing dirty words, said Fortune magazine. Although AI is not set to replace human writers
anytime soon, the possibility is still there. As James Perry, a TV actor and vice—chair of the WGA’s Disabled
Writers Committee told Reuters, “This is a crisis(危机)for writers.”
28.What is the main reason for the WGA members’ strike? ________
A.Many writers cannot find jobs without AI.

I have always been fascinated by the animal world. Recently, I read a novel about animals called A Lion’s
Traveling. Chinese writer Shen Shixi wrote it.
The book tells the story of five male lions. They are driven out of their home and begin their adventure.
Unluckily, one is hurt by a giraffe. Another is killed by a hunter. The third one dies during a fight for water
with a rhino(犀牛). The fourth lion drowns(淹死). Only the youngest one, named Red Ribbon, is still alive.
After going through many difficulties, he finally becomes the lion king.
The story shows the love and care between friends, the life and death faced by brothers, the
determination(决心) to deal with challenges, and the passion for life. The fact that the young lion finally

Candy is smart, talented and really nice. As a team leader, she wishes Frank, a member of her politics
project, did his part as required. But rather than criticize (批评) him, only to find that Frank kept falling
behind. It ended up that other team members, who had to take on more work, while Frank himself complained
that he was not treated fairly.
How did poor Candy get into this mess? The primary reason was that Candy failed in a key part of
leadership—the duty to provide clear feedback(反馈)for team members. This isn’t simply a duty but a
correctness.
Failing to question or criticize Frank’s work, Candy was in fact unkind. Many people are not a failure,
like Frank. They’re just in the wrong place, and still left in the dark. What they really need is feedback from
10关注公众号:陆陆高分冲刺 ~领取:最新版“小中高考-总复习”、最新试卷下载
their leaders. However, Candy didn’t bring out a gift in Frank.
A leader had better use open, honest, continuous and clear feedback to help solve someone’s best fit in
their job or in the organization. This method also avoids surprises. It’s not uncommon to see someone suddenly
removed from a team. Maybe it serves them right, they wouldn’t have been caught off-guard (猝不及防)
because they would have been receiving open, continuous and clear judgment of their performance.
Then why is it so hard for leaders to give good feedback? People always like to be liked, so they avoid
anything that may cause unpleasantness. But that kind of feedback usually helps members find the right place
for them. If you just only like to be liked, the chance of being respected is really low. However, you have a
chance of being liked. Of course, the most difficult part for a nice leader is criticizing someone.
Back to Candy’s case. Not telling Frank how he was on the team only made a hard situation worse. But
with a different mindset, she could have led her team to success and have been a likeable and critical leader.
43.The word “gift” in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ________”.
A.present B.ability C.pride D.praise
44.According to this article, what is necessary between leaders and team members?
A.Being nice to team members is likely to win leaders great respect.
B.Criticizing team members results in serious complaints to the leader.
C.Open and honest communication is a must for leaders and team members.
D.Praise and encouragement from leaders bring out better team performance.
45.Based on the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A.Candy should patiently encourage Frank to try his best.
B.Candy should gradually kick Frank off her team.
C.Candy should politely show Frank the improvement he made.
D.Candy should clearly tell Frank her judgment of his performance.
46.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Become a Good Leader B.Set a Good Team
C.Frank’s problem D.Cindy’s Worry

become a totally different person.
The camp taught me the ability to work together with others. At first, I wasn’t getting along with others
very well. However, I still needed to be a team player. I learned how to solve disagreements peacefully and
how to communicate with others whenever I needed help.
One day, I was told that I was to lead a song at the evening campfire. I felt nervous whenever I had to

拖) the dining hall. Right when I thought I had completed the job, my teacher kindly pointed out that I had left
dirty mop strings (细线) all over the floor. Through this experience, I learned how to do a complete job.

A.How to do a complete job. B.How to work with others.

next few days, Mrs. Blackstone made it her job to help me make more friends in class.
One spring afternoon, Mrs. Blackstone asked me to stay after class.
“I’d like to speak with you, Amanda.”
My mind raced. Had I made a bad grade? Had I hurt someone’s feelings?
“Are you enjoying your new school?” She sat comfortably behind her desk.
“I want to tell you something, between you and me, not to be shared with anyone else.” With a gentle
smile, she continued, “I see something special in you. The way you communicate with others, the kindness
you show — I think you have great potential(潜能)to be someone very important ”
I listened carefully to every word.

that and you’ll go far.”

Once upon a time, there was a happy paper doll that had no face. His whole body was perfectly cut out
and painted, except for his face. However, he had a pencil with which he could draw whatever face he wanted
to have. How lucky! He asked everyone he met, “What’s a perfect face like?”
“One with a big beak(鸟嘴),” answered the birds.
“No. Not one with a beak,” said the trees. “The perfect face is full of leaves.”
“Forget the beak and the leaves,” shouted the flowers. “If you want a perfect face, you should fill it with
colours.”
And so everyone he met—animals, plants, the sea, mountains…—told him to draw his face with their
features and colours. The doll took all of their advice. Then he had a face. However, it turned out that nobody l ikited
And now he couldn’t erase(擦除)it!
“I only wanted a face that everyone would like,” the doll cried. “And now look—what a disaster(灾

A small cloud heard his cries and came, “Hello, doll! I think I can help you. As I’m a cloud and do not
have a shape, I can make any face you like. What do you think about me changing faces until there is one that
you like? I’m sure we can fix you a little bit.”
The doll again felt hopeful. The cloud made all kinds of faces for him. But none of them was perfect
enough.
“Never mind,” said the doll. “You’ve been a great friend.” He gave the cloud a big hug, and the cloud
smiled from ear to ear, happy to have helped. Just then, the doll jumped excitedly, “That’s it! That’s the face I
want! It’s a perfect face!”
“Which one?” asked the cloud. “But I haven’t done anything.”
“Yes, yes you have! It’s that face you make when I hug you!”
The cloud finally realized that he was talking about her big smile. And together, they took the pencil and
drew the paper doll a big smile, ten times better than a beak, leaves, colours, waves and lots of other things.
And that face was indeed the only one that everyone liked because it had the secret ingredient for perfect faces:
a big smile that came from the heart and which could never be erased.

When Mark walked empty-handed up the sand, the sun was shining brightly. The watching children were
as disappointed as he was. They looked at each other and spoke softly so he couldn’t hear.
“Is that all?”
“Is he giving up?”
But Mark wasn’t giving up. He rested on the hot sand. He ate some chocolate biscuits and fed energy
back into his body. Slowly his strength and determination returned. “Would the crayfish(鳌虾) still be there?”
He wondered.
Mark knew crayfish usually hid in the darkness beneath rocks, only coming out at night to feed. How
long would his crayfish remain there before it went back under the rocks?
Mark forced himself to be patient. He lay on his back in the sun, eyes closed, nearly asleep. Excitement
and speed would only waste energy. Finally Mark rose and went back into the water.
The children, watching from the shore, were silent. They waited, twisting( 缠绕 ) curls of hair in their
fingers, digging their teeth into their knees.
Out in the bay, the crayfish was still there. Its feelers moved in the currents(水流).
Mark took long, slow, deep breaths. He cheered himself up with encouraging words, “I can do it. I can. I
can do it.” Over and over he told himself, hoping his mind would get the idea and believe it.
Down he dived. Down. Down. Down. Lungs bursting, ears popping, eyes painful. Nearly there.
Pressure(压力), Pressure. He reached out his hands. Reaching. Reaching. But it was no good. He couldn’t
make it. Only an arm’s length away, but he couldn’t reach the crayfish.

It was at the age of ten that I realized my sister was different. She had autism(自闭症). She could not
look at people in the eye. She would say to herself and repeat the words in a low voice. Although we went to
the same primary school, I never, ever said in public that she was my sister.
Just two years ago, my sister and her classmates had to prepare for a performance. She had to perform
alone because nobody wanted to perform with her. “I’ll sing,” she told my parents. I was completely shocked.
How could she sing in front of the school? She would make me embarrassed.
The big day finally arrived. It took her about a whole minute to stammer(结巴说出)her name and
class. I could see someone laughing at her, showing no respect(尊重).
“Why is she taking so long?” people around me asked. How I wished I was somewhere else! Finally, my
sister started to sing. She opened her mouth, and I was deeply moved—she sang so beautifully. The hall
became quiet. Only her voice could be heard clearly.
