When I got the driving license (驾照) last summer, Mom and I took our first trip around an empty parking lot.
Then I found that my mother was not the best ___13___ for me. It wasn’t that she shouted, or told me that I was
doing poorly. As you can imagine, my mother’s “helpful instructions” only managed to make me more ___14___.
Since I could no longer practice with her, the job was ___15___ in the hands of my father. The idea of
learning from Dad was not one that trilled me. I loved him dearly, but I just did not see Dad as someone I could be
comfortable leaning from. He almost never talked. We shared a typical father-daughter relationship. He’d ask how
school was, and I’d say it was fine. ___16___, that was the most of our conversations. Spending hours alone with
someone who might as well have been a stranger really scared me.
As we got into the car that first time, I was not ___17___ at what happened. Dad and I drove around, saying
almost nothing, except from a few instructions on how to turn. As my lessons went on, however, things began to
____18____. Dad would turn the radio up so I could fully appreciate his favorite Stones music. And he actually
began talking. I was soon hearing about past failed dates, “basic body” gym class, and other tales from his past.
Dad’s sudden chattiness was shocking until I thought about why he was telling me so much in the car. In all
the years that I had wondered why my father never spoke that much, I had never stopped to consider that it was
because I had never spent time ___19___. Homework, friends, and even TV had all called me away from him, and,
as a result, I never thought my quiet father had anything to say.
Since I began driving with him, my driving skill has greatly increased. More important, though, is that my
knowledge of who my father is has also increased. Just living with him wasn’t ___20___—it took driving with him
for me to get to know someone who was a mystery.

Tie a knot in the equator?
When Ted Hughes finished training college, he became a teacher in a high school. Ted liked children, and was
always ready to have a joke with them, so they learnt a lot from him while at the same time having fun.
One September, he was having his first lesson with a class of boys and girls. And to start with he decided to
ask them some general questions, so that he could see how much they already knew. He found that some of the
boys and girls had obviously heard that he enjoyed a joke and were ready to have some fun with him.
“Where’s Turkey?” Ted asked the first boy.
“Turkey, sir?” the boy answered. “You’ll find it on the Christmas dinner table, sir.”
“Very funny!” said Ted with a smile, while the class laughed loudly.
“Do you really know where it is?”
The boy did, in fact, know. “Part of it is in Southeast Europe and part in Asia, sir,” he said.
“Good.” said Ted. The next few boys also had funny answers to Ted’s questions. But they all knew the correct
answers too.
Ted knew that there was one girl in the class who was very clever. She had entered the school on a scholarship
that term, and it was her who he turned to next.
“Well,” he said, “now let’s see if there’s at least one of you who doesn’t talk nonsense.”
“What is the equator?”
“It’s an imaginary line drawn round the earth equally distant from the North Pole and the South Pole, sir?” the
girl answered at once.
“Good,” Ted said, “Very good.” But it sounded to him as if the girl had learnt this by heart, so he asked her
another question to see whether she was right or not.
“Now, do you really know what that means?” he asked. “Could you, for example, tie a knot (结) in the
equator?”
The class laughed, but she answered, “Yes, sir.”
“Oh, really?” Ted said with a smile.
“Yes, sir,” the girl said, “As the equator’s an imaginary line, you could tie an imaginary knot in it.”
This time Ted joined happily in the class’s loud laughter.

As people are becoming more socially conscious about where their food comes from and how it influences the
planet, they are choosing animal-free plant-based options. While there are a large number of plant-based milk
substitutes (替代品), none of them have the same taste of cow’s milk. Now, an Israeli food-tech Startup Remilk
created real dairy products without harming a single cow or the planet.
The company stresses that their product Remilk is not a milk substitute but rather is the real deal. Made from a
special process called microbial fermentation (微生物发酵),milk is produced in a lab instead of in a cow. And the
end product is very healthy. “In a very simple way, we take the gene that encodes (编码) for the milk protein,” said
Aviv Wolff, CEO of Remilk. “The gene functions as an instruction book for the production of the protein it
encodes. And so, we put the gene into a microbe that we’ve developed and it instructs our microbe to produce the
specific protein.”
The company says that the lab-produced milk tastes the same as the real thing and they hope to eventually
replace cows by creating every dairy product sold. They expect to roll out plant-based cheese and yogurt in addition
to milk. “Remilk was founded with the mission to stop using animals to produce our food because, as dairy lovers,
we realize that giving up on milk is hot an option,” Wolf said. “But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price
tag. The dairy industry is harmful to our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable (可持续
的) anymore.”
The environmental price tag of dairy farming is way too high. Dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse
gasses to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as foul the air around them.
Dairy operations need large amounts of water and run-off of fertilizers (肥料) from these farms get into local
waterways. The production of Remilk uses only 5 percent of the resources and produces only I percent of the waste
of producing cow’s milk according to the company. And they succeed in doing this by being 100 percent cruelty-

With low temperatures and a lack of food, winter is a hard season for animals. Many animals enter
hibernation, a period of going into a state of inactivity, to get through it.
While hibernating, animals hide away from their enemies. Their metabolism (新陈代谢) will slow to less than
a quarter of its normal rate. This cools the creature’s body and slows its heartbeat to just a few times per minute, for
up to months at a time.
But why don’t humans hibernate? Human hibernation doesn’t exist for many reasons. Our body is not
designed for hibernation. Our fathers were tropical (热带的) animals with no history of hibernating: Humans have
only moved to temperate and subarctic latitudes (温带和靠近北极地区) in the last hundred thousand years or so.
That’s not quite long enough to develop our metabolism into what we would need to be able to hibernate, according
to the BBC Science Focus Magazine.
For example, waste management is a huge challenge for human hibernation. Animals that hibernate are able to
essentially stop their urination (排尿) and defecation (排便) during hibernation. Unfortunately, humans can’t do
this.
There are other challenges. Body temperatures below 2.8 ℃ lead to throw the human digestive tract (消化道)
into disorder and may cause pain. Cold Temperatures can also reduce or even stop the immune system, the complex

according to Smithsonian Magazine.
In fact, humans don’t need to sleep through winter. We have discovered fire, clothes, shelter, hunting and
agriculture, all of which are much more effective ways of surviving the cold.
Could humans hibernate in the future? For long-distance space travel, it’s likely. A journey to Mars would take
around months using current technology. If we hope to visit another star system, even if we could travel at the
speed of light, the journey would take years. Being able to hibernate would make such distances considerably less
boring for the astronauts and save important resources, according to University of Oxford in the UK.
NASA is treating this question seriously. Beginning in 2014, the agency funded research on long-term
hibernation as a way to make long-term space travel easier, according to The Atlantic magazine.
30. What are animals like when they enter hibernation?
A. Their heartbeat slows down.
B. Their breathing is slow and deep.
C. Their body temperature increases.

.
31 Humans can’t hibernate partly because ________.
A. long-term sleep does harm to their immune system
B. cold temperatures damage their waste management
C. their metabolism hasn’t met the requirements of hibernation
.
D cold temperatures prevent their bodies from taking in nutrients
32. What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about?
A. The necessity for humans to hibernate.
B. The value of studying human hibernation.
C. A new technology for humans to hibernate.
D. New research on hibernation in space travel.
33. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

学科网(北京)股份有限公司With the Tokyo Summer Olympics behind us, people are turning their eyes to the 2022 Beijing Winter
Olympic Games. Freestyle skier (自由式滑雪运动员) Gu Ailing, 18, looks to be one of the superstars of the event.
Born to an American father and a Chinese mother, in June 2019 Gu decided to compete for China in the 2022
Winter Olympics. In August, she got her first gold medal for China at the Australia New Zealand Cup. Her strength
continued to grow as she won one bronze and two gold medals at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard
and Free ski World Championships in March.
,
People say she is talented. But Gu says that talent counted for (占据) “only 1 percent” of her wins
adding that her hard work is what counts. While going to school in San Francisco, Gu could only practice on
weekends. She spent eight hours going to the ski hill and back. She did her homework on the way and made full
use of her time at the hill to practice skiing.
Gu said she wants to encourage more girls in China to try skiing and other extreme sports, many of which
have only been known there for 20 years, according to the Olympics website. She said skiing gives her “freedom
and creativity”, especially when she perfectly controls her body and does tricks that others cannot do. Perhaps that’s
the reason why she enjoys skiing so much.
Now she is preparing for the Winter Olympics as a full-time athlete. “Of course, I want to win medals and
even golds,” Gu said, “But what’s more important is to bring out my own style, enjoy the game and love the sport.”
