In 2022, after five years of training and further five years on the wards, I resigned from my job as a
junior doctor. Last year, the General Medical Council wrote to me to say they were taking my name off
the medical register. It wasn’t exactly a huge shock, as I hadn’t practiced medicine for quite a while.
But Ifound ita big deal onan emotional level to permanently close thischapter of my life.
When clearing out boxes of old paperwork, I noticed a training portfolio (档案袋). All doctors are
recommended to logtheir clinical experience init. On looking through this portfolio for the first time in
years, my reflective practice seemed to involve going up to my hospital on-call room and writing down
anything remotely interesting that had happened that day.
Besides these, I was reminded of the long hours and the huge impact being a junior doctor had on
my life. Reading back, it felt extreme and unreasonable in terms of what was expected of me, but at the
timeI’djust accepted it as part of thejob.
Around the same time that I was reliving all this through my diaries, junior doctors in the here and
now were coming under fire from politicians. I couldn’t help but feel doctors were struggling to get
their side of the story across and it struck me that the public weren’t hearing the truth about what it
actually means to be a doctor. Rather than shrugging my shoulders and ignoring the evidence, I decided
Ihad to dosomething to redress thebalance.
So here they are: the diaries I kept during my time in the hospital. What it’s like working on the
front line, the consequences in my personal life, and how, one terrible day, it all became too much for
3me. (Sorry for revealing what is in mybookbeforehand.)
Along the way, I’ll help you out with the medical terms and provide a bit of context about what
eachjob involved. Unlike being a juniordoctor, Iwon’t just drop you in the deep end and expect you to
knowexactly what you’re doing.
24.Whatdoes thewriterthink of hisremoval from themedical register?

C. It came as ashocking news for him.
D. It opened anew chapter oflife forhim.

Within the last decade, adult coloring books have surged in popularity. The vast selection available
today includes abstract images, mandalas (圆形图案) and your beloved characters ranging from Marvel
toDisney and anything in between. Themes aside, these books have often been best sellers and claim to
provideusers with theopportunityto connect with theirinnerartists andlivehappier lives.
But do they? I have heard friends, family, students and clients all share their personal pleasure
experiences with adult coloring books. And honestly, I truly enjoy my own. Nevertheless, I recognize
that just because my personal interpretation tends to be echoed in those around me does not mean that
an illustrationa day keeps thesorrows away.
But what is it about these books that is so inviting? Is it the nostalgia (怀旧) for the free coloring
we experienced as children? Perhaps it gives us a creative outlet to break our rigid routines? Or could it
bethemindfulness achieved as wedisconnect from chaos and connect tothepresent?
A previous study provided support for adult coloring books. Curry and Kasser investigated a group
of undergraduates with anxiety, provided them either with a blank page or a mandala, and instructed
them to color for 20 minutes. Both designs reduced anxiety, but the mandala was slightly more
effective.
In a recent study, experts utilized randomized controlled experiments to explore the differences
between coloring and a free drawing. In one experiment, there were no differences in between an
unguided coloring group and a free drawing. However, in a second experiment, participants were
assigned to either a guided or unguided mandala coloring group, and although no differences were
noted inmindfulness, thoseina guided group did showa reduction in anxiety.
It seems as though adult coloring books are therapeutic (治疗的), but they are not substitutes for
therapy. There may be benefits, but the personal process may be different from the growth one
encounters in therapy. If you do enjoy this artistic activity and hope to improve your mental health,
perhaps you will benefit from seeking a creative practitioner or an art therapist to help you along the
journey.
28.Whatdoes thewriterthink of theadult coloring books in thefirst two paragraphs?
A.They can helpease anxiety.

4A.to concentrateonwhat they are doing
B. torelivethepast joyofdoing coloring
C. torelate to theirfriends and theirfamily better
D. to takea break from theirdull everyday routine
30.Whatcan we learn from thestudies about thereduction ofanxiety?
A.Both studiesshare thesame method.
B.Both studies indicatemandala works better thanothers .
C.Therecent studyproves theeffectiveness ofbeing guided.
D.Theprevious study proves theeffectiveness ofbeing instructed.
31.Whatis themain idea ofthis text?

B.Adultcoloring books have boththeirpros and cons.
C. Adultcoloring books have more effects than we expected.
D. Adult coloring books can beusedas amedical treatment inreducing anxiety.

Absence of evidence is not, as the saying goes, the same thing as evidence of absence. But if you
continue looking for something intensively and keep failing to find it, you can be forgiven for starting
toworry. And soit is withgrammar teaching in schools and itslink withthe improvedwriting ability.
One study among many others, in this case, found that teaching kids how to label the bits and
pieces in a sentence does not make them better writers. It was novel in that it tested six- and seven-
year-olds who used a digital platform called Englicious to take grammar lessons alongside the rote (死
记硬背的) classroom teaching of grammatical details and their functions. The Englicious group did no
betterthan thosereceivingordinary instructionwhen itcame to writing narrativepassages.
Bath Aarts, one of the researchers on the project and one of the scholars behind Englicious holds
out hope that with longer exposure, or a study of older students, an improvement in writing skills might
bedetected.
Other observers may begin to wonder whether the National Curriculum in England, which since
2014has made grammarsuch acentral part ofits English program might have gone down ablind alley.
In retrospect (回顾过去), the grammatical knowledge of modal verbs such as “can”, “should” and
“may” does little to help students use them effectively in their own writing. These words are anyway
grasped by tiny children without the need to know what they are called. This may tempt the conclusion
that the teaching of grammar should be shelved altogether. But there are reasons to reform it rather than
scrap it.
One of practical reasons to ask children to work on grammar is that explicit knowledge of it will
make learning a foreign language easier. Even if you did intuit (凭直觉知道) how to make noun
clauses in your native languages as a very young kid just without instruction, grasping them in German
or Russian in later years is simpler if you know how to define and spot them. In fact, many English
speakers come tounderstand grammar bystudying a foreign language rather than theother way around.
32.Whydoes the authormention “absence ofevidence is not thesame thingas evidence ofabsence”?
A. Tointroduce thepassage with alargely unsupported assumption.
B. Toshow that thereis noneed to worry about thefailure ofgrammar teaching.
C. Todemonstrate that researchers shouldtry harder to support grammar teaching.
D. Toimplythe existence ofconnection between grammar teaching and betterwriting skill.
33.Whichof thefollowing isincorrect according to paragraphs2and 3?
A. Many studies have shownthat grammar lessons don’t helpwith writingskills.
B. Longer exposureto digital grammarlessons caneffectively improvewriting skills.
C. This study stands out from previous ones because it involves ane-learning platform.
D. Theproject’s researcher Bas Aarts expects thesystem tobe useful forhigh school students.
34Whatdoes theunderlined word “shelves”mean?
A. Suspended. B. Placed. C. Divided. D. Supported.
35.Whatis thewriter’s attitudetoward thefuture ofgrammar?
A. Neutral. B. Supportive. C. Negative. D. Confused.

At the age of 80, Mia always felt tired and it had nothing to do with her age, though. 16 years ago,
her son, Lucas, died in a plane crash. After a long-timesearch, the rescuers said there were nosurvivors
and nohope forthevictims’families.
The accident cast a shadow to the whole family. Lucas’s wife Zoe, still looking after their son
Mark, had not recovered from his death, and Lucas’s mom Mia missed her son and often felt hopeless
about life.
One day at home, when watching the news on TV, Mia and Zoe were suddenly shocked by what
they were seeing. A news reporter was talking beside a man who looked like Lucas. He seemed older
than hehad ever been. Thenews caused great excitement. “It mustbehim!” Miaand Zoe exclaimed.
“If you recognize this man, please call the number on the screen. Recently, a vague (模糊的)
memory of having a plane crash hit this man’s mind. But he still doesn’t remember anything before the
crash 16 years ago near the Monolith Islands. Authorities now have reasons to believe that there was a
mistakein theprevious report that thecrash left nosurvivors…”
When the news ended, Zoe called the number immediately. She told the attendant that she believed
the man was her husband Lucas and provided details. Zoe also asked for more information about what
had happened over the past 16 years since the accident. The attendant said, “16 years ago, some local
fishermen found him who lost his memory. They offered him a job, and he has worked and lived with
oneofthem since then.”
This attendant then told Lucas that his family were waiting for him to go home. Weeks later, Lucas
went to the city where Mia and Zoe lived. All the family members were waiting at the airport. Finally,
thegates opened, and people were coming out.
