On holiday, many will find themselves in foreign lands. Things are often
different and new to them, 65 the language. In the past, they might have
carried a dictionary with them. But nowadays more and more of them are using free
translation apps not only to understand a passage but also to talk. With the
conversation section on these apps, you can speak into the phone and hear a spoken
translation moments later.
Though that would always be helpful, some translation might 66 you.
Take one of the best-known translation apps as an example. If we say “I’m peanut butter-
free” to it, in French or Italian, the app translates it as “I’m without peanut butter.” It’s true
to the words, while the meaning is totally wrong. The best tool may not be a translation
app at all.
Then how about an AI system? Let’s try ChatGPT. Tell it “Write a message in
Spanish to a waiter. I’m peanut butter-free, so I’d like some sandwiches without
peanut.” It produces a 67 passage. The AI system does more than just
translate. It’s more like a native dinner guide.
Some say that in this age of AI, people no longer need to learn a foreign
language. Douglas Hobstadter, a polyglot (a man who speaks or understands
many languages) 68 . He describes giving a difficult speech in Chinese. It
takes a lot of work without the help of AI, but in the end, you feel a sense of
achievement. Which would you be proud of, climbing to the top of Qomolangma
(珠穆朗玛峰) or taking a helicopter there?
As AI becomes more popular, people divide into two groups. Some go on
learning languages. They want to exercise their brains, learn a lot about other
cultures and 69 chat with foreign friends. Others show their respect to the
language learners. “Good for you, but that’s a bit painful for me,” they might say.
What’s your opinion on this 70 ? Is it still necessary to learn languages?
65. A) except B) including C) without D) beyond
66. A) surprise B) attract C) prevent D) recognize
67. A) similar B) strange C) perfect D) humorous
68. A) replies B) disagrees C) wonders D) denies
69. A) actually B) politely C) honestly D) directly
70. A) review B) lecture C) debate D) interview
英语试卷 第7页(共10页)C. Fill in the blanks with proper words(在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺,每

Snowboarding is an exciting outdoor activity and is becoming very popular among
teenagers. Here, we find out how it can help you to become healthier and enjoy life more.
Taking up snowboarding is a great way to help you to be c 71 and brave—
even if you don’t get it right the first time. That’s why snowboarding is a fantastic way
to learn and develop a new interest. I met Kathy Champion, 15, on Mont Blanc, where
she e 72 why snowboarding was good for teens.
Kathy started snowboarding at a young age. At only nine years old, she was already
snowboarding with her dad in Scotland and she c 73 to love it to this day. “Being
in the mountains for hours every day made me feel so good and alive,” she said. It helped
her to understand how her body works because she learned skills to help her ride the
snowboard p 74 . It also made her feel that she could do something very well.
“Snowboarding taught me to believe in myself, even when I was worried about hurting
myself.” Did she get hurt? “Yes, sometimes, n 75 serious,” she says.
“But it didn’t make me stop. It made me want to succeed even more and get to the
bottom of the mountain!”
In what other ways can snowboarding make you
healthy and enjoy life more? “It keeps you very fit, very
positive, but it also helps you to make new friends,”
Kathy says. She believes that doing an extreme sport also
introduces you to a new and positive community. “You
can get s 76 from people who understand what
you’re doing and are there to help you improve.” And
she thinks the feel-good part of snowboarding can also
help teenagers keep out of trouble. “Some people I know
from school laugh at me when I tell them how great I feel
after snowboarding. They think that hanging out on the
street and doing stupid things is fun—I don’t see how!”
So, what is Kathy’s a 77 to all teenagers? “Get
a snowboard, get healthy and enjoy life!”

Eton, a ten-year-old boy, used to go for a walk
with his father every day, on a nearby hill. One day
the boy said, “Dad, let’s have a race today. One who
touches top of hill first, wins the race.” Father agreed.
Both of them started running toward hilltop.
After running for some time, Father suddenly
stopped. Eton asked, “What happened? Why did you
stop suddenly? Have you accepted your defeat
already?” “No, No. Some pebbles got stuck in my shoes. I stopped to remove them,” Father replied.
“Some pebbles got stuck in my shoes too, but I don’t care. Once I reach top, then I will remove them,”
Eton replied. Saying this, the boy ran ahead fast. Father removed pebbles from his shoes and moved
ahead.
Eton had gone far ahead, but now he started feeling pain in his feet because of the pebbles stuck
in his shoes and his running speed started to decrease (下降). Gradually, Father came close to him.
Seeing his boy, Father shouted from behind, “Why don’t you remove pebbles from your shoes first?”
“But I don’t have time for this!!” said the boy.
In a short while, Father overtook him. Eton’s pain had increased a lot due to the pricking pebbles
and now he was not even able to walk. He stopped there and screamed, “Dad, I can’t run anymore.”
Father quickly ran back and took off Eton’s shoes and saw that his feet were injured. Father took the
boy back home and applied some medicine to the injuries.
When pain subsided(消退) a bit, he talked to the boy, “Son, I told you to first remove your
pebbles and then go on with the race.” “But 82 ,” Eton said. “It is not
like that, son, if any problem come in our life, then we should not delay solving them by saying that
we don’t have time right now. It would have taken you hardly one minute to remove that pebble but
now to save that one minute, you will have to suffer from pain for one week”, Father said.
78. Did Eton and his father have a race on a nearby hill one day?
79. Why did Father suddenly stop after running for some time?
80. Why did Eton begin to run more and more slowly?
81. How did Father take care of his son’s feet?
82. What might Eton say to his father? Fill in the blank with one sentence.
