From the moment you wake up in the morning until you go to sleep, our lives are filled with
noise. Whether it’s the radio at breakfast or chatting with friends at school, sounds surround us.
Without quiet times—meaning no music or noise—our brains can ___70___ when they receive too
much information at once. This can lead to increased anxiety and stress levels.
A regular habit
Many people have a habit of filling silence with noise. We might listen to our favourite music
on the way to school or have the TV on while doing homework. However, by ___71___ these
habits and introducing short periods of silence into our day, we can lower our stress levels.
Silence is a superpower
Silence offers lots of ___72___. Scientific studies show that silence can help produce brain
cells and improve mental health. The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, “Silence is a source
of great strength.” Learning to be comfortable with silence can feel like having a special power. It is
highly valued in many cultures, helping to truly rest a busy mind.
Welcome the break
Embracing silence is important. Communication is a big part of being human, and we often
want to fill quiet moments in ___73___ to avoid feeling awkward. However, learning to sit quietly
can give us time to think about what we hear and process our thoughts more deeply.
Silence helps your brain
Just like our bodies, our brains need rest. Non-stop noise doesn’t let our brains relax fully. Quiet
times give us the chance to think and daydream. ___74___ you find it hard to focus or be creative,
getting rid of background noise can help you work better and give your brain space to solve
problems.
You don’t need to spend hours in silence. Setting aside just five minutes a day for complete
quiet can make a difference. Finding a peaceful corner or simply ___75___ can be a good start.

Beethoven, one of the world’s most-loved composers, is famous for his nine symphonies (交响
曲). Before he died, he began a new symphony, but n___76___ finished it. Computer scientists and
musicians now used artificial intelligence to finish his 10th Symphony.
Ludwig van Beethoven was born over 250 years ago, yet his music is still played daily around
the world. His work is often used as the background music in movies, TV shows, and even
c___77___ for children.
A symphony is a long, complicated piece of classical music, usually divided into four parts. The
four parts are often l___78___ by “themes” – repeated musical ideas that tie the whole piece
together. When Beethoven died in 1827, he had some ideas for a 10th Symphony. But all that he left
behind were some notes about the piece and a few short bits of written music.
In 2019, a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. Their
g___79___: to try to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday. The
team didn’t just want to complete the symphony, they wanted to come as c___80___ as possible to
producing the symphony that Beethoven meant to write. That’s where deep learning came in.
To use an AI to help with the symphony, the team turned every piece of music that Beethoven
ever wrote into a form the computer could understand. By i___81___ the program to all of
Beethoven’s music, the AI could look for patterns in the way Beethoven wrote.
Other members of the team worked to figure out what Beethoven was planning to do.
One early test told the team they were on the right track. They took a few minutes of music
created by the AI, and played it for Beethoven experts, musicians, and reporters. Nobody could tell
the difference.
F___82___, the AI had the challenge of trying to connect the little musical bits into a
symphony. It took over two years to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony. Not simply a melody,
but 40 minutes of music for a full orchestra.
So, Beethoven now has a 10th Symphony. And though Beethoven didn’t write it all, the team
feels sure that the music is very much like what he might have written, if he’d had the chance.

Charlie attended regular school in Lincolnshire and was the only
visually impaired (VI) student there. Growing up was tough for him,
especially since he faced unfriendly comments from others. This
experience taught Charlie the importance of good communication with
both teachers and peers. He explains, “I can’t see much when reading.
徐汇区初三英语 本卷共8页 第7页Paperwork needs to be much larger, often in size 72 font. It’s not impossible to see, but I need
changes in everyday life.”
To help with his education, Charlie used a laptop for schoolwork and had models and graphs to
feel and understand during lessons. He also worked closely with teachers to ensure he got the
needed help from them in class, like receiving PowerPoint presentations before lessons began.
Despite the help he received, Charlie faced a lot of bullying, especially in secondary school. At
the start of Year 10, things got so bad that he didn’t want to go to school. The school even held an
assembly to explain his vision problem to other students. For example, his eyes don’t always look
where he’s actually focusing, which sometimes led to misunderstandings with classmates.
One particularly difficult situation happened in his science class. Some students thought he was
staring at them, even though they were across the room and he couldn’t see them. Because of this,
Charlie was required to switch classes but decided against it. He had already established good
communication with his science teacher about his needs and thought, “Why should I be the one to
move?”
Charlie considered leaving school completely but chose to stay after weighing the advantages
and disadvantages. A teacher advised him to pay no attention to the bullies, saying that in the
future, he would realize it was the best choice. Although it was hard at the time, Charlie now
understands that things are getting easier and easier in the long run.
