Dr David Evans, 65, has been teaching chemistry in Beijing for
nearly 30 years. He has been famous online in China recently. It’s
because of his great work to make the public understand science better
and have fun from it.
He is also a regular visitor to schools. Young students were
interested in the experiments that produce bubbles in test-tubes, smoke,
fire and fluorescent color (荧光染料). “The most important thing is not the experiment
you choose to make, but how you use the material to make it interesting and to give
some knowledge,” he said. When asked about the videos online, he added, “I want to
use the Internet to light up their interest in chemistry. Hopefully, I can give students a
chance to actually see the beauty of chemistry, and some of them would love to become
scientists in the future.”
So far, he has visited more than 300 cities across China, giving chemistry lessons in
schools, science museums and other places. But China is so huge that Evans realizes he
needs to be more creative in reaching out to the public. So in 2018, he started uploading
videos online. The 534 videos have received more than 9.9 million followers and 23
million “likes”.
For his great efforts and achievements in China, Evans was given the Friendship
Award, the highest one in China for foreigners, in 2001, and the China International
