After spending the weekend away with my adult son, I was so impressed by his generous
heart that I sent him this letter.
Dear son,
I want to thank you for teaching me a very valuable lesson in life by the great example
you set. When we were eating at that cafe in Bondi and a person who had ordered his
hamburger didn’t have enough money to pay for it. Without any hesitation, you went over and
put the extra $2 into his hand.
When we were leaving, you also threw a five-cent coin onto the road and said something
like, “Some kids will really enjoy finding it.”
Last week, a young man ahead of me in the line at a petrol (汽油) station didn’t have
enough money to pay for his petrol. I asked the money collector, “How much short is he?”
She told me he had meant to put $15 petrol in his car but he had been looking at the wrong
gauge (计量表) and had put in 15 litres (升) which came to just over $20. This is an easy
mistake as both gauges run fast.
Something made me think of you and what you did that night at the cafe in Bondi. I
handed the young man $6. He was so surprised and said, “But why would you do this for
me?” I just smiled as I thought of you.教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
Thank you, son. It’s better to give than to receive. Now when I see a five-cent coin on
the ground and want to pick it up, I think of you and leave it there just in case some kids will
get excited to find it.
Love always,
Mum

It was just another warm spring afternoon. As usual, I was waiting to pick up my mom at教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
the school parking lot. Suddenly, a ball rolled into the parking lot and stopped in front of me. I
looked around and waited for someone to come and collect it, but no one showed up.
Just when I was about to pick up the ball, I saw two kids racing towards me. “Pass it to
me!” One of them shouted. And so I did. They got the ball, quickly thanked me and then went
back along their way.
I was curious about where they were from. With plenty of time on my hands, I decided to
quietly follow them to their “paradise.” And there it was—in the school playground, a score of
children were laughing, chasing balls or making fun of their friends. They were really having
a good time!
This reminded me of the carefree days of my childhood. Back then, lunchtime meant
home-cooked food that had been lovingly prepared by my mom, not an oily, ready-made
lunch from the staff canteen. The final exams were the only thing I had to worry about (in
fact, my mom was even more worried about them than I was). The sharing of a new comic
was the biggest deal of the month. Praise from my teachers seemed like a lifetime
achievement award.
Life has just moved on. Almost ten years have passed since my college graduation. Many
more people have entered my life, but few of them have created memories as sweet as my
school friends had. If I were given the chance to talk to these kids in the playground, I would
say, “________.”

Michael Morpurgo was born on 5th October, 1943 in the south of England. He and his
brother were moved from London when the Second World War began. Michael went to two
different boarding schools when he was growing up. He particularly enjoyed playing rugby
and singing but he often felt homesick and missed home. After school, Michael joined the
army but he did not enjoy being shouted at and so he left shortly afterwards. Michael then
decided to go to university instead.
After graduating from university, Michael became a primary school teacher and taught in
a small school in Kent. He loved teaching and his favourite thing to do was to read stories to
his class. When he ran out of stories to read to them, Morpurgo started to write his own. His
first book was written in 1974 and was called It Never Rains: Five Stories. Morpurgo has
stated that the days he spent teaching are some of the happiest of his life.
Michael left teaching after ten years and bought a farm with his wife. Together they
began a charity called Farms for City Children. This charity offers children who live in
poorer, inner-cities the chance to come and stay on a working farm for a week. Children learn
from hands-on experience about how to care for animals and how to work with others as part
of a team. The charity is still running today, and thousands of children have been to stay at
one of the three farms that the charity now owns.
Michael Morpurgo has written over 100 books for children. He writes about children and
their relationships with older people and animals. He also writes stories about wars. Many of
them have won prizes and several are now films or plays, including War Horse, which is now
well known around the world. Another popular book is Kensuke’s Kingdom, which he wrote
in 1999.

Should Classroom Pets Be Banned?
For students across the United States, the start of the school year means meeting with
their new teachers and classmates. Some will also be saying hello to their new classroom pets.
Many teachers keep fish, hamsters (仓鼠) and other animals in their classrooms.
Teachers say students learn important lessons from having animals in the classroom.
According to American Humane (美国人道主义,一个动物和儿童福利组织), more than 70
percent of teachers who have classroom pets say that the animals help students to develop a
sense of responsibility. Research also shows that classroom pets can reduce stress. “Pets are
great companions (同伴) and can comfort kids who are having a bad day,” said Lisa Robbins.
She works for a group called Pets in the Classroom.
But others think pets should be removed from classrooms. They worry that the animals
might create problems for kids who have allergies (过敏) to animal hair. They are also
concerned about the animals receiving the proper care they need. “Who will ensure that they
are protected and fed over weekends and during school breaks?” asked Andrew Burns, a
school official.
Here’s what two students think.
Yes.
Schools should ban pets because pets can be a distraction. Some students might have
a hard time focusing during classes when there are animals in the classroom.
Plus, having a classroom pet can cause safety problems. You never know how an
animal will react (作出反应) to students. Even a cute little hamster might bite a kid who
sticks his or her hand in its cage.
In addition, being in a noisy classroom with kids poking at the cages can be stressful
for the animals. Students might also not know how to properly handle the animals. They
could drop the pets or be rude to them.
—Patrick McKinney
No.
Having classroom pets gives students a fun way to learn about animals and their
habitats (生活环境). In my class last year, we had a bearded dragon (鬃狮蜥) named
Elliot as our class pet. Our teacher also used him to teach us about different subjects. For
example, in math, we calculated how much it would cost to feed Elliot for a year.
Pets also help kids learn how to work as a team. My classmates and I took turns
feeding Elliot and cleaning his tank (缸).教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
If teachers are worried about students with allergies, they could get pets that don’t
have fur. Reptiles (爬行动物) like Elliot or fish are some good choices.
— Lisa Mays

On a small hill in Huaping(华坪), Yunnan, there is a small school. However, over the past
12 years, it has rewritten the fate of 1804 poor girls by sending them to universities.
Zhang Guimei (张桂梅), now 63, is the principal of this school. She began teaching in
Huaping — one of China’s poorest areas — twenty years ago. The teacher wondered why
many girls in her class would just one day stop coming to school. After some investigations,
Zhang learned that they were from very poor families. These girls were forced to work or get
married at a young age. “We often say that we want every child to have a fair start,” she said.
“But these poor girls don’t even have a chance to stand on the starting line.”
Zhang wanted to change this. She spent years trying to raise money. Finally, in 2008, she
set up the Huaping High School for Girls. It’s China’s first and only free public high school
for girls.
Zhang gets up at 5 a.m. every day to turn on the lights on each floor of the teaching
building. Many girls are timid, the principal explains. She wants them to feel safer on their
way to classes. After years of tiring work, Zhang is now in poor health, but the school and the
children matter more than anything else in her mind.
Zhang’s story has warmed hearts all around China and inspired many to follow in her
footsteps. Zhou Yunli (周云丽) was one of her students. After she finished university, she
heard that her alma mater (母校) was short of maths teachers. She immediately returned to the
school to teach. “Without Ms. Zhang, I would be nobody,” Zhou said with a smile. “When
you become strong, you must remember to help others. This is what Ms. Zhang taught us.”

Drama and the performing arts are excellent methods of building confidence in children
and adults alike. Learning through drama allows children to explore their creativity, have fun
and leave their shyness and worries behind. Drama also works by supporting the growth of
imagination and other skills.
Entertainment has become rather passive with cinema, television, and computer games
becoming more popular. These screen-based methods have had a negative effect on
communication. However, drama puts the “get-up-and-go” back into entertainment. Children
have the opportunity to connect with others in a more meaningful way as drama encourages
speech development and awareness of body language.
Play and drama are closely linked. When children play a game, they are pretending and
using their imagination and so are moving away from reality to create their own story. Drama教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
is a vehicle through which children can express themselves more freely through mime ( 哑剧
表演), gesture, movement, and speech to make education fun.
Children gain confidence by understanding that there is no final answer in drama and that
their opinion and actions are valued. Children are able to give a personal response to many
issues and situations such as poverty, bullying, global warming and recycling. The issues that
drama can deal with are endless. Drama and education have a strong link as drama can
encourage children to take an active interest in other subjects such as geography, history, and
English and so have a more rounded education. As a drama teacher, I have witnessed children
at their first class holding onto their parent’s arm——unwilling to let go. Then to see the same
child later running into my class with a smile is an excellent sight. Drama installs confidence
in children by allowing them to improvise (即兴创作) and experiment. Everyone is given the
opportunity to shine within drama.

Mark Twain is one of the most quoted authors ever. There are hundreds of his
quotations(语录) in books, on posters and on websites. Here is an example:
“If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.” --- Mark Twain.
Quotations like this one give us guidance. It reminds us that telling a lie is much more
difficult than telling the truth. Telling a lie means you have to remember what you said
each time you tell the lie. If you tell the truth, there is nothing to remember. He suggests
that you shouldn’t lie not because it is wrong, but because it is hard work. Here is another
example.
“Always obey your parents when they are present.” --- Mark Twain
Again, the quotation gives good advice --- to always obey your parents, but the
humourous part is when they are present. The quotation tells you to obey your parents
when they are there with you --- because they can see what you are doing.
Albert Einstein’s quotations are also popular. Many of his quotations are inspirational (
鼓舞人心的). This means that they help us to do our best and be the best person we can be.
Here is an example:
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to
stop questioning.” --- Albert Einstein
This is a much more serious quotation than the two Mark Twain ones. It gives us a lot
to think about. Also, because this was said by Albert Einstein, it makes us want to take the
quotation serious. This quotation gives us hope that we can learn from any mistake we
made yesterday. It reminds us to always look closely at everything we do and ask the right
questions to help us achieve our best.教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333

Stephen Glenn is a famous American scientist who has made several very

to his fantastic achievements. To solve the mystery, a reporter interviewed him asking
why he was able to be so much more creative than the average person.

refrigerator and it fell, spilling its contents all over the kitchen floor—a real sea of milk!
Instead of shouting at him, giving him a lecture or punishing him, his mother said,
"Steve, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! Well, the damage has already
been done. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we
clean it up?”
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, "You know, Steve,
whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to clean it up and
restore all the things to its proper order. So, we should clean it up." He used the
sponge (海绵) and together they cleaned up the spilled milk.
His mother then said, "You have a failed experiment in how to effectively carry a
big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Let's go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with
water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it." The little boy
learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry
it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!
