Why do people use dictionaries? Three ways make dictionaries useful: They show us
how to spell words; they tell us the meaning of words; they show us how words are used with
other words to make people understand ______40______ what we want to say or write.
This dictionary does all things above with a bit more than 3,000 words. It not only教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
gives the meanings of words in an easy form, but also shows how the words are used by using
the words in ______41_______ chosen sentences.
If we want to look up the meaning of a word, it will not help us if some unknown
words are ______42______ in the explanation. So, in this dictionary, a fixed list of about
1,500 ______43______ words is used to explain all the words in the book. For example,
‘friendly’ and ‘friendship’ are explained with the sentences made from ‘friend’. This list of
words will be found at the end of the book.

Three years ago, a group of researchers at Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab
had a guess. They knew that as part of the National School Lunch Program, apples were
served to kids.
But many of them ___65___ in the rubbish bins, some even untouched. Unlike others,
they wondered why the kids didn’t want the fruit.
They thought the fact that the apples were being served whole, rather than sliced (切成
片的), made the fruit out of favor. And they wanted to ___66___ this idea.
They carried out a study at eight schools and found that fruit consumption( 消耗)
___67___ by more than 60 percent when apples were served sliced. They then made a
followup study at six other schools, which not only showed the same result, but further
___68___ it. Both the overall apple consumption and the percentage of students who ate more
than half of the apple served to them were more than 70 percent higher at schools that served
sliced apples.
Based on these results, it seems that even the simplest forms of inconvenience can
influence us. Sliced apples did reduce the waste. However, the hardest part is getting kids to
___69___ eating fruit, and that’s exactly why sliced apples are the way to go. A child holding
a whole apple has to break the skin, eat around the core ( 果 核 ), and ___70___ the
inconvenience of holding a large fruit. These problems might seem silly or unimportant, but
they’re important when you’re missing teeth or have braces (牙箍), as so many kids do.
It’s one of those situations where what seems like a really small inconvenience
actually makes a huge difference.

Mary Anning: The Fossil Hunter
As a fossil(化石) scientist, Mary Anning(1700—1847) made great contributions(贡教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
献) to her field in the 19th Century. Her name is now widely known in Britain and even
Europe. But that was not always the case.
Anning was a talented woman. She was born in a poor family in Lyme Regis, Britain.
She did not receive any proper education and had to teach h___71___ geology( 地质学 ) and
paleontology(古生物学).
Anning grew up by the sea. At a young age, she showed great interest in studying the
fossils along the coastline. Anning worked very hard. She went out in all weathers to search
for fossils. At the age of 12, she uncovered a skeleton that looked like a crocodile. Then, after
ten years of tireless e___72___, she made an amazing discovery. It was a huge fossil of
something that the world had never seen before.
However, many of Anning’s findings d___73___ with the widely accepted theories
(理论) at that time. So most of the scientists didn’t believe or recognize the value of her
findings. What’s more, in that period, people s___74___ respected women. Anning’s findings
were even published without her name. During her lifetime, the woman was never s___75___
considered to be a scientist.
But such troubles didn’t stop Anning from making more discoveries. The woman was
still keen on studying v___76___ sizes and types of fossils alongside the sea. Some of them
were as large as a huge rock while others were smaller than an egg. Until 1829, she carefully
uncovered a skeleton of a fossil fish which made her known among first-class scientists. Her
discoveries helped to study some extinct(已灭绝的) animals. They formed the basis for
Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species (《物种起源》) .
In recent years, more and more people have come to realize the importance of
Anning’s work. She is now listed among the top ten British women who have greatly
a___77___ the history of science. Anning was an ambitious and hard-working woman in
history. She deserves to be Remembered.
D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题): (12 分)
①One night, I was sitting in my kitchen half-listening as my 12-year-old son, Kevin
fought with his brother Tommy. I didn't pay attention when Kevin went upstairs with a look
of hurt on his face.
②About 20 minutes later, as I was walking upstairs I heard Kevin crying inside
the bathroom. I knocked on the door and asked, "Kevin, do you want a talk?" No answer. I
tried again. Still nothing happened.教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
③So, I took a piece of paper from a notepad and wrote, "If you don't want to talk, we
can write notes to each other." and slipped(滑动) it under the door.
④An hour later, I was still sitting outside the bathroom with two piles(堆) of cards in
front of me. They are cards from Kevin on which he had put all his unpleasant feelings into
words for me. As I read one of Kevin’s notes, I couldn’t help crying. One of Kevin's notes
said, "Nobody in this family cares about me. I am not the youngest, and I am not the oldest,
and I am not the smartest. Tommy thinks that I am too weak and Dad wishes he had another
Kevin as a kid because he's better at basketball. And you’re never around to even notice me."
⑤He was right about my part. Feeling sorry for him, I wrote back, "Kevin, I do love
you and I am here for you and you are loved in this family." He didn’t reply for a while, but I
could hear him crying softly. Kevin ran out of paper, so he wrote "Thanks" on a paper cup. I
wrote back "For what?" It was returned to me with the reply "Loving me" written on it.
⑥Since then, I have tried my best to care about my family members. When one of us
notices that the other is unhappy, we’ll smile and say, "Write it on a paper cup".
