There are a number of different places to eat in the
Sunshine Shopping Centre.
The Northern House is small, but very popular. The
noodle soup tastes very good. Everything is clean and the staff
are friendly. Prices are good too, but you may have to wait
quite a long time as the restaurant is so busy.
The Rome Hut is a new restaurant. It is very smart, but the
pizzas here do not taste good. We did not eat our fish as it
smelt bad. The waiters looked angry and we thought it was
expensive. This restaurant needs to be improved.
The Tokyo Restaurant has been here for many years and
the staff bow(鞠躬) to customers when they enter and are very
polite. The fish is very fresh and most of the food is delicious.
The amount of food you get is quite small but it always looks
nice on the plate.
The Golden Dragon is a large Chinese restaurant. It has a
lot of different food. The sweet and sour pork is excellent, the
Beijing Duck is famous, and the winter melon soup is good.
Go there for a really good meal but expect to pay a lot. Prices
are high.
The Come in Coffee Shop is very modern. There are many
kinds of coffee and if you like sweet things wait until you taste
their cakes and cookies! You can also have sandwiches — I
enjoyed the egg sandwich a lot. They have modern music
playing, but it is often very noisy, so it is quite difficult to have
a good conversation.教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333

These days, more and more people are getting the latest news from a screen rather than a
paper. Yet many people still find it exciting to open a freshly printed newspaper to discover
what’s in it. Scanning through a copy of the morning paper has become an irreplaceable part
of their day. One of the most popular dailies in the United States is The New York Times.
Every night, the paper gets printed at 26 plants across the country. College Point, built in
1997, is the biggest among them. It prints 1.7 million copies of The New York Times every
week.
If you ever have a chance to visit College Point, you will be impressed by many things.
The first among them is perhaps the paper rolls. Each of them is half as heavy as a car (that is,
about 900 kilograms). They are moved from the storage to the printing presses with the help
of three robotic arms. There are also 30,000 liters (升) of black ink and 9,500 liters of
colored ink. Trucks deliver ink to the plant every week.教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
Finished newspaper pages are sent digitally from the newsroom to the plant. They are
then burned (刻) with lasers onto thin aluminum (铝制的) sheets called plates. There are
seven printing presses at College Point. Each of them is several stories tall. During a print run,
they can print as many as 80,000 newspapers per hour. Pressmen would carefully adjust the
presses before they place the plates on the machines. Electricians and machinists are also on
hand during this setup to solve any problems that may occur. The noise of the running presses
is awful. Each press is shut down for one shift (轮班) each week. Press staff will then climb
inside to maintain (保养) the machine’s key parts.
Sometimes, news breaks during a press run. If it’s important enough, the newsroom will
call to “Stop the presses!” Often, the copies that have already been printed won’t be thrown
away, but the rest of the night’s run will be based on the updated version.
Usually, all print runs of The New York Times are completed by 3 a.m. Maintenance and
electrical teams will then make preparations for the next shift. The plant is so large that they
have to ride bicycles in order to get around!

I have been a staff writer for the school newspaper, the Dagligtale, since my first day
here at the University of Alberta. I probably won’t work as a journalist after my graduation,
but this doesn’t mean my experience in student journalism has been useless. In fact, I have
picked up many important skills through this job.
I still remember my first news story. It was about the victory of the school baseball team.
I attended the celebration and was told to do some interviews. I was frightened. Talking to
strangers was one of my fears. But I gathered my courage and did it. I talked to the students,
the players and the team leader. It was something I had never dreamed of doing before. This
opportunity gave me confidence and helped me to improve my social skills.
In journalism, everything has to be based on facts. As a student journalist, I have learned
to do research and to think critically about what I read. Discovering the facts is important
when you are writing for the school newspaper, but in the Information Age, this is also an
increasingly useful skill in everyday life.
As a student journalist, I always know that I have a lot to learn. I’m never afraid of asking
people for feedback (反馈意见). I have learned how not to take negative (负面的) feedback
personally and how to use it to make improvements to myself.
Journalism is a stressful field to work in, but I’m thankful that I have had the opportunity教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
to try my hand at it. It has taught me to be a better storyteller, student and citizen. If you are
ever given a chance to write for a campus newspaper or magazine, take it and learn everything
you can!

________ page.
A. Entertainment B. Letters C. Sports D. Opinion
48. We can learn from the article that the author used to be ________ .
A. irresponsible B. lazy C. unhappy D. shy
49. What is the author’s attitude towards negative feedback now?
A. She is often very sad about it.
B. She usually turns a blind eye to it.
C. She listens to it and improves herself accordingly.
D. She often has both good and bad feelings about it.
50. According to the author, what skill has become more and more useful in our daily lives?
A. Story-telling. B. Critical thinking.
C. Time management. D. Social communication.
51. By writing this article, the author mainly wanted to ________.
A. thank the person who let her join the Dagligtale

Unlike the owls in the Harry Potter books, homing pigeons can’t be given an address to
fly to. But if they are taken away from home, even as far as 1100 miles away, homing pigeons
can always find their way back.
This ability has made homing pigeons good messengers for thousands of years. Homing
pigeons were widely used in both World War I and World War II. Several birds even received
medals for delivering important messages during wartime.教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
But how do homing pigeons find their way home overlong distances? Scientists believe
that homing pigeons have both a compass mechanism and a map mechanism in their bodies.
A homing pigeon’s compass mechanism relies upon the Sun. Like many other birds,
homing pigeons can use the position and angle of the Sun to determine the proper direction
for flight.
Homing pigeons’ map mechanism relied on low-frequency infrasound. Humans cannot
hear these sounds. But these sounds are created by nearly everything. Homing pigeons listen
to these sounds until they recognize the sounds of their home.
39. Homing pigeons can fly back if they were taken away from home ________ miles away.
A. 2000 B. 1800 C. 1500 D. 1000

42. According to the map mechanism, homing pigeons can find way back because ________.
A. they hear their owner calls them
B. they recognize the low-frequency infrasound from their home
C. they ask other homing pigeons for help
D. they know the direction of the Sun
43. What is NOT mentioned according to the passage?

Turning Trash Into a Free Library
A second-grade education has not stopped garbage collector Jose Gutierrez. He is
bringing the gift of reading to thousands of Colombian (哥伦比亚的) children.
Gutierrez started saving books from the trash 27 years ago. He was driving a garbage
truck at night through the country’s richer neighborhoods. The books that were thrown away
slowly piled up (堆积). Now the ground floor of his small house is a community library. It is
stacked (堆放) from floor to ceiling. They range from chemistry textbooks to children’s
classics.
Gutierrez says books are luxuries ( 奢 侈 品 ) for boys and girls in low-income
neighborhoods such as his. New reading material at bookstores is too expensive. There are 19
public libraries in Bogota, a city of 8.5 million people. But the libraries tend to be located far
away from poorer areas. “They should be in all neighborhoods and on each corner of every
neighborhood,” the 60-year-old says. “Books can save us. That is what Colombia needs.”
Gutierrez has a love of reading. He says that comes from his mother. She always read to
him even though she was too poor to keep him in school. Gutierrez has traveled to book fairs
(展销会) in Mexico and Chile to share his experience of starting a library with the books that
are thrown away. “To me, books are the greatest invention and the best thing that can happen
to a human being.”
Gutierrez is a keen reader of works by authors such as Leo Tolstoy and Victor Hugo. His
favorite books include One Hundred Years of Solitude and The General in His Labyrinth by
Colombia’s Nobel Prize-winning novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The first book Gutierrez
found was a copy of the classic novel Anna Karenina. The Tolstoy book was later joined by
The Little Prince, Sophie’s World, The Iliad and a number of novels. Today, he has collected
around 25,000 books.
Gutierrez still looks through the rubbish for additions to his library, named “The Strength
of Words.” His fame as Colombia’s “Lord of the Books” has helped a lot. It has brought him
thousands of donated books. He has sent many to other libraries around the country. He
doesn’t have room for them all.
Gutierrez says he doesn’t reject (排斥) technology that allows books to be read digitally.
But he prefers to read the printed words on paper. “There is nothing more beautiful than教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
having a book in your pocket, in your bag or inside your car,” he says.

A.Gutierrez doesn’t enjoy digital reading because he believes printed books are easier to

himself.

space station. They showed the students how to increase their strength with their exercise
equipment introduced a specially designed spacesuit and performed experiments. Ye, who is
on his first spaceflight, showed how he moved in the weightless environment. They also
answered questions from students during the lecture.
It was the first lecture of the Tiangong Class. More lectures will be held and presented
by Chinese astronauts. Such activities are held to spread knowledge and encourage a love for
science among young people.

that would ignite students’ interest in science.
Wang Yihan, a fifth-grade student, said, “The experiments really surprised me. I have
great interest in spaceflight and would like to take part in our country’s space program in the
future.”
Vincent Wong, headmaster of Hong Kong Pui Kiu College, said the event gave Hong
Kong students an opportunity to communicate with the astronauts. “It also helped to
strengthen their national identity as they saw the rapid development of our country’s space
technology,” he said.

Future history books might record that we were robbed of the use of our eyes.
In our hurry to get from one place to another, we fail to see anything on the way. Air
travel gives you a bird’s-eye view of the world——or even less if the wing of the plane
happens to get in your way. When you travel by car or train, you are moving so quickly that
you do not see the countryside clearly. Car drivers are forever thinking about going on and
on: they never want to stop. Is it the great motorways that attract them, or what?
And as for sea travel, here are some words of an old song: “I joined the navy
(海军) to see the world, and what did I see? I saw the sea.” You name the place
in the world like El Dorado, and someone is sure to say “I’ve been there”,
meaning “I drove through it at 100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else.”
When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live in the
future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some
other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. By traveling like
this, you suspend (终止) all experience.
The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives in the present. For him traveling
and arriving is one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he
makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes and the whole of his
body. In the end, he feels tired. Satisfying sleep will be: the reward of all true
travelers.
44.When we are going to another place in a hurry, we __________.
A) get a good view on the way B) make good use of our eyes
C) fail to enjoy views with our heartD) are eager to see everything on the way
【答案】C
【解析】根据第一段第二句we fail to see anything on the way.可知选C.
45.The underlined phrase “get in your way” in Paragraph 1 means __________.
A) arrive at a place B) develop a particular habit
C) reach a particular state or conditionD) block your sights教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333

aircraft happens to get in your way,说的是,你的视野可能会更小如果机翼遮住了视
线,get in your way 和block your sights,选D.
46.The writer uses the words of an old song to tell us __________.
A)sea travel is a good way of seeing the world
B)joining the navy can help our dreams come true
C)traveling by sea hardly helps us enjoy wonderful views
D)what he gained after joining the navy
【答案】A
【解析】根据第二段“I joined the navy (海军) to see the world, and what did I see? I saw
the sea.” You name the place in the world like El Dorado(传说中的宝山,理想中的黄金
国), and someone is sure to say “I’ve been there”, meaning “I drove through it at 100 miles
an hour on the way to somewhere else.”主要突出sea travel是一种看世界的不错的方式。
47.When we travel at high speeds, “the present” means “nothing” because__________.
A) we change our aims all the time B) we are eager to go to another place
C) we are looking forward to the future life D) we can experience a lot
【答案】B
【解析】推理判断题。根据第三段the present means nothing: you live in the future

On a Friday night, a poor young artist stood at the gate of the subway station, playing his
violin. Many people slowed down and put some money into the hat before him.
The next day, the young artist came again. This time, he took out a large piece of paper
and put it on the ground. Before long, a crowd gathered around because of the words on that
paper. It said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my
hat. Please come to get it soon.”
It caused a great excitement and people wondered what it could be. After about half an
hour, a middle-aged man ran there in a hurry and rushed through the crowd to the violinist. He
said, “Yes, it’s you. I knew that you’re an honest man and would certainly come here.”
Making sure it was George Sang, the violinist took out a lottery ticket and returned it to
him. George was a bank clerk and the lottery ticket would bring him $500,000. Yesterday
when he took out 50 dollars and put it in the hat, the lottery ticket was also thrown in. The
violinist was a student at an Arts College and had planned to attend studies in Vienna. He had
booked the ticket and would fly that morning. However thinking that the owner would return
for it, he cancelled the flight and came back.
Later someone asked the violinist, “You had to play the violin at the subway station every
day to make the money. Then why didn’t you take the lottery ticket for yourself?”
The violinist said, “Although I don’t have much money, I live happily; but if I lose
honesty I won’t be happy forever.”教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333

When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three
months to buy holiday presents for those he loved. The third Saturday in December Mark said
that he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went off on his
own while I waited patiently reading a book in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to
choose his presents. The clerk rang in his purchases(把他所购物品输入现金出入记录器)
as I politely looked the other way. Mark kept within his budget(预算)and reached into his
pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark教育资源分享店铺 网址:https://shop175591889.taobao.com 微信号:kingcsa333
stood in the middle of the store holding his basket, tears rolling down his cheeks. His whole
body was shaking with his sobs. Then an amazing thing happened. A customer in the store
came up to Mark. She knelt down and took him in her arms.
"You would do me the greatest favour if you let me replace(补还)your money," said
the woman. "It would be the most wonderful present you could ever give me. I only ask that
one day you pass it on. One day, when you are grown-up, I would like you to find someone
you can help. When you help this other person, I know you will feel as good about it as I do
now."
Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran to the checkout counter as fast as he could. I
think we all enjoyed our gifts that year as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.
I would like to say "thank you" to that very kind woman. I would like to tell her that four
years later Mark went house to house collecting blankets and clothes for the homeless people
in the Oakland fire—and he thought of her. And I want to promise her that Mark will never
forget to keep passing it on.
