Witchcraft and Wizardry escape rooms for us. The aim was to pass our exams and graduate from
wizard school. So we put on our black robes (长袍) and got to work! I was sorry when it finished
because I wanted to keep studying. It was so much fun!

I haven’t done anything like this before, but I love history; so to celebrate the end of term,
we went to a Pharaoh (法老) escape room. What we needed to do was to find the lost treasure of
the last Pharaoh. It was like travelling to another continent—the pyramid was very real. We
worked as a team to find clues and solve riddles. It was satisfying to complete the task, but I think
some of the riddles were really a piece of cake because we completed all the tasks in only 49
minutes!

were four teams of five and we needed to find a bomb (炸弹) before it exploded (爆炸) . It was
exciting to work against the dock. One of the puzzles was really hard so the Game Master put a
clue on a TV screen to help us. Luckily, we found the bomb in time, so we went to have dinner
together afterwards to celebrate our success.

Then, near the end of the first year of school, there was an accident at the mine. Pedro was hurt quite badly and

Once upon a time, there were four seeds who were good friends. The wind took them into the air and they finally
landed on an open space in a jungle. There they remained hidden in the ground, hoping they would be able to grow
up and become beautiful trees.
But when the first seed began germinating (发芽), they realized that it wouldn’t be such an easy task. In that
area, there lived a group of monkeys, and the smallest ones would amuse themselves by throwing bananas at any
plant that was starting to grow.
They threw so many bananas at the first seed that it was almost split (分裂) in two. And when it told the other
seeds what had happened, they all agreed it would be better to wait for that group of monkeys to move on before they
tried to grow.
Then, the first seed thought she should at least attempt (尝试) it. And when she tried, she was pelted with
bananas, and was left folded over. The other seeds told her to stop trying, but that little seed was so determined to
become a tree that she tried again and again.
So, for days, weeks and months, the little plant was attacked by the monkeys, and she was always doubled
over (在腰部弯曲).
And then, one day, she didn’t double over. She was hit by one banana after another, but none of them managed to
make her bend. She had taken so many blows, and been doubled over so many times, that she was full of hard knots
and scars. They helped her grow stronger, and finally, it could withdraw (承受) the impact of a banana. And the
brave seed was already so well developed that the little monkeys couldn’t uproot her from the ground, either. So there
she stayed, growing, growing and growing.
Thanks to the strength of her trunk, she could continue to overcome all difficulties, until she became the most
majestic tree in the jungle. Meanwhile, her friends remained hidden in the ground. They were still hoping that those
horrible monkeys would one day lose interest in throwing bananas at them. They never realized that those animals were
strengthening them by throwing bananas at them. This would prepare the seeds for all the problems they would meet
in their lives.

Chapter Five
Her first day in Frankfurt was a strange day for Heidi, but even stranger for Ms. Rottenmeier,the housekeeper.
At first Heidi couldn’t think where she was. When she woke up, jumped from the big white bed and ran to the
window, she saw neither the snow on high mountains nor the little stream winding below. All she saw was brick walls
and houses. There was no sound of the wind in the trees-only the sound of carriages (马车) rattling over the stone
streets outside.
Heidi felt as though she had been locked up in a cage. But Ms. Rottenmeier felt that she was locked up with a
strange, wild child. The child knew nothing of how to behave in a well—run house. She was late to meals. Her clothes
were not correct. She made friends with the servants.
But Clara had become much more cheerful since Heidi’s arrival. She liked talking to Heidi about life in the
mountains and about Heidi’s grandfather. For Clara the next few days were much less dull than usual.
Heidi was less happy. Tomorrow, she kept thinking, I really must go home. But one thing pleased her. Every day
she took more rolls from the table and hid them in her room. She was saving them for Granny.Granny’s teeth were
no longer able to chew the hard, black bread which was all she had, and Heidi planned to take back to her the lovely
soft rolls as a present.
At last, one day, she started for home. But at the door she met Ms. Rottenmeier.“Where are you going? I have
strictly forbidden (禁止) you to go outside by yourself!” Ms.Rottenmeier said.
“I’m only going home,” said Heidi. “I’ve been away too long. My goats must be missing me and...”

bring my pets with me into the office when I want to. They’re my joy and give me the energy at work. Being able to

I have met many wonderful people throughout my career. Teachers are a fun group of people. They often get
excited about a challenge. Many teachers are creative. They almost always find a way to make things work. I’ve
learned a lot from them.
And then there are the students. There is nothing better in life than to see them realize their dreams and achieve
something they have worked hard for.
What suggestions do you always give to your students?
As a language learner, you have to be comfortable with making mistakes. The goal is not to be perfect. It’s to be
able to communicate with others. Learning a language can be a lifelong process. No one can learn to speak a language
well overnight. You will be speaking just a little more every day.
What challenges do you think learners face today?
I think the biggest challenge today is the unknown. Technology and many other things are changing fast. We
have no way of knowing what will happen in 10, 20 or 50 years from now, so how can you prepare yourself or others?
Well, you can’t be prepared for everything. But you can equip yourself with creativity and the ability to keep learning
throughout your life and to work with others. Most importantly, you must stay strong and carry on.

12. 2024年上海市嘉定区中考二模英语试题、
Captain Harpreet Chandi has achieved her aim of becoming the first woman of colour to do a solo
expedition (探险) in Antarctica. She has completed a trek of 700 miles to the South Pole without any support from
others.
To get there, she faced temperatures as low as -50℃ and wind speeds of up to 60mph! Not only that, she pulled a
90 kg sled (雪橇)!
Using the name “Polar Preet”, she’s raising money to set up an adventure sponsorship (资助) program. It’ll
help fund other women hoping to complete unique challenges.
Captain Chandi’s trek to the South Pole took 40 days. That is a whole five days faster than she expected to get
there! On completing her journey she left a message on her website saying, “I made it to the South Pole where it’s
snowing. Feeling so many emotions right now. I knew nothing about the polar world three years ago and it feels so
surreal (梦幻般的) to finally be here. It was tough getting here and I want to thank everybody for their support.”
Captain Chandi wanted her expedition not just to be a personal challenge. She also wanted to ________. Writing
on her website she said, “You are capable (有能力做的) of anything you want. No matter where you are from or
where your start line is, everybody starts somewhere.” By doing such a difficult task, she hopes to show that anyone
can do challenging things.
