专题 08 阅读回答问题 一、宝山区 十二、阅读回答问题 Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题) Fourteen-year-old Jimmy Cooper and the other boys on the local teenage football team may sometimes lose a game, but they won a fight against bullying. Danny Edwards, the team’s “water boy”, was being bullied at school. Danny has had a speech disorder(语言 障碍) since his birth. When he grew up, kids made fun of him for the way he talked and the way he dressed. Each day, Danny went to school in a favourite suit, tie and fedora hat(软呢帽). Danny didn’t think it was a big deal. “I...just feel…really...comfortable in it,” he said. Jimmy was upset when he found out Danny was being bullied. “I thought to myself, no one should be picked on for the way he looks or speaks,” said Jimmy. So Jimmy decided to wear the same suit and hat to school, too. “I did it to stand up for Danny and show him that bullying is not right I wanted him to feel happy and safe and know that anywhere he goes he’ll be treated fairly by his friends,” Jimmy said. “I knew Danny would like it. I told my mum that I didn’t care what people thought about me in school because I was doing it for Danny.” When Jimmy told the other boys on the team what he was planning, they wanted to be part of it, too. So they planned a “Danny Edwards Appreciation Day(感恩日).” They decided that on a special day, instead of wearing football jerseys(球衣) , they would dress like Danny. Word spread about the special day, and other kids in school decided to show their support, too. On the planned day, they all dressed in suits and ties and met in the school library where they cheered, stomped their feet, and chanted “Danny! Danny! Danny!”.“I was...really... really happy, and it made...my...day,” said Danny. “It’s really meaningful for us to team up for kids like Danny, Jimmy said. 58.Jimmy Cooper had a fight with the other boys on the local teenage football team, didn’t he? ________________________________________________________ 59.Why did the kids at school make fun of Danny Edwards when he grew up? ________________________________________________________ 60.How did Jimmy feel when he found out Danny was being bullied? ________________________________________________________ 61.What does the underlined word “it” refer to? ________________________________________________________ 62.Who took part in “Danny Edwards Appreciation Day”? ________________________________________________________ 63.What do you think of Jimmy and the other boys’ plan for Danny? The citywide spelling competition was one month away. Over the weekend, Ms. Pettis picked me up. We went to her home, where she helped me practice the spelling of difficult words. Unfortunately, I was already busy helping her brother. When I finally came to her 30 minutes later, she told me that it was too late and that she had asked Chat GPT for help. Through several rounds of questions and answers, the bot(机器人程序) had explained her physics lesson as well as helped her solve the problem. I checked the chat. The explanations were perfect. I wouldn’t call this cheating—she had not asked the bot to do the work for her. Rather, it was through her interaction(交互) with the bot that she gained a better understanding of the problem and how to solve it. This year is likely going to be the tipping point(爆发点) for AI. Below let’s take a closer look at what GPT is, how it works, its limitations and problems. Chat GPT is a big language model. It is trained on a large amount of text, which allows it to produce human- like responses to various questions. However, Chat GPT has trouble with complicated mathematical calculations. This probably shows that logical thinking hasn’t been fully picked up by such models. Moreover, in the current model, most of the training text was collected from publicly available data that had been gathered before the year 2021. As a result, such models are unable to produce accurate current information. As a free tool, Chat GPT has allowed students to complete their homework without much effort. This has raised concerns(忧虑) about cheating—and the loss of learning ability. Educators fear that students will become lazy thinkers. They will fail to develop lifelong skills like critical thinking(批判性思考), researching and writing. For sure, Chat GPT is a powerful language model. It has the power to completely change the way we learn and interact with machines. As the Chinese saying goes, “Water can carry a boat but it can also turn it over.” I think it’s important for us to remain aware of the problems that it’s likely to cause. 58.The author didn’t help his daughter with her homework, did he? ________________________________ 59.How did Chat GPT help the author’s daughter solve her problem? ________________________________ 60.What is Chat GPT? ________________________________61.Why do educators fear that students will become lazy thinkers? ________________________________ 62.What did the author want to express by mentioning the Chinese saying in the article? ________________________________ 63.Will you turn to Chat GPT when you can’t work out a certain problem? Why or why not? ________________________________ 【答案】58.No, he didn’t. 59.Through several rounds of questions and answers. 60.A big language model. 61.Because Chat GPT has allowed students to complete their homework without much effort. 62.It’s important for us to remain aware of the problems that it’s likely to cause. 63.Yes, I will. The book says today's Chinese boys are both physically and emotionally(情感地)weak. It claims, in effect, that boys are becoming more girly! The writers of the book say modern culture and education system have an effect on this situation. They also say boys' learning is constricted(受限制的)by having to sit still in class all day. They don't have good role models in school because most of their teachers are women. It encourages people to make the best of a situation, to see the “bright side” of things. It calls attention to the way sunflowers follow the sun during the day. People have known about this phenomenon (现象) for a long time. Recently scientists have discovered how this works. They know why sunflowers keep their “faces” to the sunshine. Sunflowers move and respond to their environment. These flowers actually face the sun as it rises in the eastand follow it as it moves across the sky until it sets in the west. Just like people, these flowers depend on the daily rhythms (节奏) of the day and night. Both the sunflowers and human beings wake up in the morning, follow the sun all day and then rest at night. During the day, young sunflower plants track the sun from east to west. The green flower head turns towards the sun. At night, the young plants turn east waiting for the sun to rise in the morning. Adult sunflowers don’t move. Once the flower is open, it faces only east. Scientists have discovered that this movement and lack of movement has to do with uneven (不均匀的) growth in the plant stems. One side of the stem gets bigger during the day, and at night the other side gets bigger. Certain genes (基因) control this growth. They respond to the light and cause the flowers to turn to face the sun. Scientists have found that young sunflowers that follow the sun have more biomass (生物量) —that means that they get bigger. Adult plants facing the east get warmer. That in turn attracts more bees and other insects that will help pollinate(授粉) the plant. This means that the plant can produce seeds and has a better chance of reproducing. 58.The material above is a news report, isn’t it? _____________________________________________ 59.What do sunflowers usually do during the day? _____________________________________________ 60.Why do both sunflowers and human beings depend on the daily rhythms of the day and night? _____________________________________________ 61.When do the young sunflower plants turn to face the east? _____________________________________________ 62.According to scientists, what causes the movement and lack of movement of the sunflowers? _____________________________________________ 63.Do you like to be young sunflowers or adult sunflowers? Besides the key time required to be part of a team, it’s a full-body exercise. When I joined a team, they told me it took at least three years to become a good paddler. There’s so much to remember: correct posture and movement as well as team synchronization(同步,同时性)are necessary for a team’s success. Dragon boat racing is a well-honored tradition in China and the highlight of the Dragon Boat Festival. However, because of the pandemic (疫情), last year’ s races were put off from June to October. For the first time, Taipei’s dragon boat championships were held during the October holiday, Our team knew racing conditions on the river would be different in October, but we had no idea how different they would be. A nearby typhoon brought in the fierce winds and big waves on the river. With about 40 teams participating, I didn’t expect our team to go very far. This was the first competition for most of us. And only the top two finishers in each group would advance to the next round. Simply getting to the race’s starting point for our first group was a challenge. The big waves threatened to flip(翻转)us over. Paddling against wave was tough, but we crossed the finish line and surprisingly, advanced to the second round. The next day, there was no shortage of accidents. Boats flipped over and others lost control and weren’t able to finish their races. In our final race that day, we narrowly advanced to the following day’s semifinals. We faced strong competitors in the semifinals, including a semiprofessional team. Being held back by their boat’s waves was highly frustrating. However, in dragon boat racing, no one ever stops paddling, no matter what! So I kept paddling working my hardest to keep pace with the team. We trailed the other boats, but we didn’t lose hope. In the final push, filled with both excitement and exhaustion, we persisted and advanced to the finals! Although we had expectations, never did we imagine we’d make it into the top three. How come? Let me tell you! To win a dragon boat race, you need three things: 6 , 6 and 6 . 74.Paddling a dragon boat is easy, isn’t it? ________, _______________. 75.According to the team mates, how long did it take to become a good paddler?_____________________________________________ 76.Why were the races put off last year? _____________________________________________ 77.How did the writer feel when they advanced to the second round? _____________________________________________ 78.What do you think of the writer’s semifinal race? _____________________________________________ 79.What can be filled in the blanks in the last paragraph? However, unlike many of my classmates, my idol is not a film star, a famous writer or a sportsman. He is neither a world leader nor an important person from history. My idol is my dad. Most people believe that a man should go out and work. However, when I was only a five-year-old boy, I was seriously ill and needed attention all the time. My mother and father both worked and my grandparents lived far away. This was a big problem. My dad knew how much my mum loved her job, so he stopped working to stay at home and look after me. Many men in this situation would want their wives to stay with the child, but my dad always thinks about others before himself. This made me start to respect him. My dad later took a job and worked at night. He chose the job so that he would only be out of the house when I was sleeping. Since then, my dad has helped and supported me in everything I do. I remember when I was learning to ride a bike. My dad ran behind me and held the back of the bicycle so that I would not fall. I felt so safe because I knew he was near. I did not notice when he stopped holding me. Soon, I was able to ride by myself. My family is not rich, and we do not own a big house or an expensive car. My dad has showed me that something is more important than money. My dad gives me his time. Although he now works hard every day and is often very busy, he always makes time to stay with me. He helps me with my homework, and plays games with me at weekends. He has also taught me we do not need money to make ourselves happy. We make and fly our own kites, go for walks in the countryside, and even cook together. He taught me that I can achieve anything if I really work hard on it. My dad is my idol because he showed me the most important things in life.58.The writer’s idol isn’t a famous person, is he? ________________________ 59.When did the writer get ill and need attention all the time? ________________________ 60.Who chose to stop working and cared for the writer? ________________________ 61.Why did the writer’s dad later take a job to work at night? ________________________ 62.According to the writer’s dad, what is more important than money? ________________________ 63.What does the writer mean by “the most important things in life” at the end of the passage? A few weeks ago, Catherine asked Thomas, her 12-year-old son, what he would like to be when he grew up. Thomas said he wanted to be a Lego(乐高) designer. The next day he appeared with a letter, written in his “best handwriting”, asking Lego if he could work for them. He wisely shared that he’d be available to help with designing Legos after school, on weekends, and in the holidays—and that his sister would be keen to do the same. His mom put the letter in the mail but also tried to manage his expectations. She told Thomas that thecompany probably wouldn’t respond though Lego would appreciate his letter. According to Catherine, “He looked disappointed.” Then a package arrived from Christian Pau, the vice president and general manager of Lego U.K. and Ireland. Inside was a Lego kit(模型套装) and a handwritten letter that said: “Seeing my son light up with pride at the beautifully crafted(制作精美的) letter,” Catherine wrote, “was something I won’t forget.” And neither will Thomas. Christian Pau didn’t know how Thomas might react to his letter. He simply took the time to respond. It was a small moment to him, but actually a big moment for Thomas. As Catherine wrote, “Thank you...for making my son see that it’s always worth trying.” 58.Where was the story published? __________________________ 59.What do the underlined words “the same” refer to? __________________________ 60.Why did the mother try to manage her son’s expectations when she mailed his letter? __________________________ 61.What was inside the package from Christian Pau? __________________________ 62.What did Christian offer Thomas in his letter? __________________________ 63.How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph? __________________________ 【答案】58.On Linked In, an online social platform. 59.Help with designing Legos after school, on weekends, and in the holidays. 60.Because the company probably wouldn’t respond though Lego would appreciate his letter. 61.A Lego kit and a handwritten letter. 62.Invite Thomas to visit them in their Slough office (togetherwith his sister and parents) for a juice/tea/coffee and a tour of the building. 63.It makes Thomas see that it’s always worth trying. 【导语】本文主要讲述了12岁的Thomas想成为一名乐高设计师,于是给乐高公司写了一封信,没想到收 到了回复,从而使得他明白,尝试是值得的。 58.根据“Catherine shared a story of her son on Linked In, an online social platform.”可知,这个故事在一个 在线社交平台Linked In上发表的。故填On Linked In, an online social platform. 59.根据“He wisely shared that he’d be available to help with designing Legos after school, on weekends, and in the holidays—and that his sister would be keen to do the same.”可知,他很聪明地告诉我,他可以在放学后、 周末和假期帮助设计乐高,他的妹妹也很乐意这样做。the same指代在放学后、周末和假期帮助设计乐高。 故填Help with designing Legos after school, on weekends, and in the holidays. 60.根据“She told Thomas that the company probably wouldn’t respond though Lego would appreciate his letter.”可知,因为她认为公司可能不会回复,尽管乐高会感谢他的来信。故填Because the company probably wouldn’t respond though Lego would appreciate his letter. 61.根据“Inside was a Lego kit(模型套装) and a handwritten letter that said”可知,包裹里是一个乐高模型套 装和一封手写信。故填A Lego kit and a handwritten letter. 62.根据“We would still love to invite you to visit us in our Slough office (together with your sister and parents) for a juice/tea/coffee and a tour of the building.”可知,Christian邀请Thomas(与他的妹妹和父母一起)去他 们的Slough办公室喝果汁、茶或咖啡,并参观大楼。故填Invite Thomas to visit them in their Slough office (together with his sister and parents) for a juice/tea/coffee and a tour of the building. 63.根据“He simply took the time to respond.”及“As Catherine wrote, ‘Thank you...for making my son see that it’s always worth trying.’”可知,Christian花一点的时间来回复Thomas,却让Thomas明白了尝试是值得的。 故填It makes Thomas see that it’s always worth trying.
