Have you ever heard of prodigies. The following are just three of them whom the world has known so far.
SARAH CHANG is described by other musicians as “the most wonderful, perfect violinist (小提琴手)”
they’ve ever heard. What makes this praise especially surprising is Sara’s age: She’s only a teenager, and people
have been describing her this way for years. On Sarah’s fourth birthday, her father gave her a violin. By age 5, she
was accepted at the famous Juilliard School of Music, in New York City. By 8, she was performing as a violin
soloist (独奏者) with major orchestras. Since then, Sarah has performed around the world. She has also recorded
many albums.
Before MICHAEL KEARNEY was born, the doctors warned his parents that he might have learning
difficulties. He’s been proving them wrong ever since! By the time he was 4 months old, Michael could say full
sentences like, “What’s for dinner, Mom?” By 10 months, he could read words. Studying at home with his parents,
Michael completed four grade levels each year. At 5, he entered high school-and finished in one year. By 10, he
graduated from college with honors. At 11, he went to graduate school.
When ALEXANDRA NECHITA was 2, her parents gave her some crayons (彩色铅笔) and coloring
books. Alexandra was soon working in inks, watercolors, and by the time she was 7, oil paints. At 8, Alexandra had
her first art exhibition. Her paintings are often compared to those of Picasso and other great artists. They have sold
for as much as $80,000. She has been on TV, and a book of her paintings was published.

Robot fools humans
The idea that robots could one day be our friends has been around for a long time but until now they have
always seemed more machine than person. A new study by a researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology has
found that in fact it’s possible for robots to fool us here and there, they are just less perfect than human. Inspired by
the Turing Test, Agnieszka Wykowska came up with an experiment using a child-sized human-like robot called
iCub. Sitting in front of a screen, the people in the test were asked to press a button when a green box appeared on
the screen, however, iCub only responded to red boxes Wykowska programmed the robot to take different lengths
of time to respond, just like a person would. Afterwards, the humans were asked to judge whether they had been
competing with a machine or a person according to the time of the buttions being pressed—and they couldn’t tell.
Wykowska believes that making robots have more human responses is the key to making better robots and creating
more trust between humans and robots. In another study with iCub, the robot and a human watched special videos of animals. In the first set of tests,
iCub greeted the person, asked for his name and kept eye contact with its camera “eyes”. It made comments about
the videos, laughed and showed emotions (情感). In the second experiment, however, iCub did not communicate
with human and just made machine-like noises. The researchers found that people believe that the more human
iCub is, the more it has its own thoughts and desires. The team now wants to know if people can communicate with
robots that do not look human but that still show human-like actions. The researchers plan to repeat the
experiments, using robots of different shapes and sizes, to see how people give their responses.

A.the green boxes people used B.the time of the button being pressed

A.watch special videos of humans B.keep eye contact with its camera “eyes”
C.greet the person and ask for his name D.make comments and show emotions
43.In the second experiment, people believe that if iCub is more human-like, it has ________.
A.more machine-like noises B.more human-like actions
C.more different shapes and sizes D.more thoughts and desires of its own
44.Which information is RIGHT in this passage?
A.Robots are no longer machines and they have been our friends for a long time.
B.Wykowska did some experiments but failed to find if iCub had any human responses.
C.The researchers plan to do the experiment again to see how people will respondD.In the second test, iCub didn’t communicate with human because it became foolish.

Choose the best answer(根据文章内容,选择最恰当的答案)
Dear Emma,
I’ve finally arrived in Sydney. It has been a long journey.
Yesterday morning, I got a taxi to take me to the airport. I had to check in two hours before the time on my
ticket. I gave the airline my luggage, and got my boarding pass. Then I had to go through security check. There, a
serious airport staff checked inside my other bags. After that, I still had an hour left, so I looked around some shopsin the airport. I bought myself a magazine and some snacks for the trip.
I had never been on a plane before, so once I sat down I listened carefully to all the safety instructions. Then
the plane took off. I was close to a window. I was able to watch the ground slowly disappear through the clear
window. However, soon all I could see were clouds, so it wasn’t very interesting.
The journey took fourteen hours, all the way from Los Angeles to Sydney. I got meals and watched a couple of
films on the plane. When I arrived, I had to remember the time difference—the time in Sydney is seventeen hours
ahead of Los Angeles, and I had to change my watch from midnight to 17:00 next day. I nearly missed a whole day!
After I landed and got off the plane, I went to find my bags. I was happy because I found my luggage quite
quickly. The woman next to me on the plane was not so lucky—her luggage was sent to a different country! She
was very upset.
I took the bus into Sydney, as the airport is almost an hour away from the city center. I then had to carry my
heavy luggage down onto the underground, and travel several stops to get to my hotel.
Once I got into my room, I lay down on the bed. This must be caused by jet lag—the feeling you get when
your body thinks it is one time in the day, but in fact it isn’t.
Now I am going to sleep after spending nearly half a day traveling. I think I am really going to enjoy my
holiday in Sydney.
Yours
Hanna

Choose the best answer(根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案)
With easy access to cameras on mobile phones and other devices, many people take photos every day. Phone
cameras have many fun features. You can add colors to the photos that make them artistic and full of life. Even with
a wide variety of filters(滤镜) and features, it still takes skill to capture amazing pictures. With a few tips, you can
improve your photos and follow in the steps of great photographers.
Tip 1 Choose your subject. It could be a landscape, people, animals or objects.
Tip 2 Keep your background simple with all white or black to make your subject standout.
Tip 3 Hold your camera steady. This may be harder than it seems, but don’t let shaky hands ruin your pictures.
Tip 4 Remember the rule of thirds. Imagine your picture is divided into three equal parts. Place the subject to the
side rather than in the middle of the frame.
Tip 5 If you are taking nature shots, use leading lines to draw the viewer’s eye into the scene. Examples might be
railway tracks, fences, or a row of trees.
Tip 6 Give your subject space to move. For example, if a dog is running across the lawn, frame the shot so that
there is room in front of the animal for it to run into that empty space. Don’t cut it off too closely.
Tip 7 Think about colors. Just as you would plan colors for a painting, try to find color schemes(配色方案) that
work well.
