Here are some reviews of escape room experiences:
Ben, aged 13, London, UK
When Joe told me his birthday party wasn’t going to be a seafood barbecue and then singing karaoke again
this year, I almost refused his invitation. But this escape room experience was so much better! Joe’s a big Horry
Potter fan, he’s read all the books, so he chose the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry escape rooms for us. The
aim was to pass our exams and graduate from wizard school. So we put on our black robes (长袍) and got to
work! I was sorry when it finished because I wanted to keep studying. It was so much fun!
Mei Ling, aged 14, Guangzhou, China
I haven’t done anything like this before, but I love history; so to celebrate the end of term, we went to a
Pharaoh (法老) escape room. What we needed to do was to find the lost treasure of the last Pharaoh. It was like
travelling to another continent—the pyramid was very real. We worked as a team to find clues and solve riddles. It
was satisfying to complete the task, but I think some of the riddles were really a piece of cake because we
completed all the tasks in only 49 minutes!
Cesar, aged 16, Malaga, Spain
My family loves escape rooms, so 20 of us visited one during the summer holidays. There were four teams of
five and we needed to find a bomb (炸弹) before it exploded (爆炸) . It was exciting to work against the dock.
One of the puzzles was really hard so the Game Master put a clue on a TV screen to help us. Luckily, we found
the bomb in time, so we went to have dinner together afterwards to celebrate our success.
When was the last time you went to an escape room party with your family or friends?

Alice and Jill were nine-year-old twins. Alice had brown hair and brown eyes, while Jill had blond hair and
blue eyes. Alice had a round face, while Jill had a heart-shaped face. For the longest time, the twins were begging
their mom to have a pet. Their choices for a pet were as different as they were.
This is where the problem began. Alice would say, “A dog is a better pet than a cat because you can teach a
dog many things and run in the park with him.” Jill would say, “A cat would make the best pet because we could
just sit and watch him run around in the room.” “A pet is a lot of responsibility,” said Mom. She said the girls
needed to sit down together and make a list of the things they wanted to know about keeping each pet.
The girls agreed, and sat down that night to make their list. They were going to spend the money they saved
together to buy their pets. After school the next day, they went to Mr. Li’s Pet Shop and asked Mr. Li to show
them some dogs and cats. Mr. Li showed them a cute brown dog and a white cat. The girls brought the list they
made the night before and asked many questions. Finally, the girls said, “Mr. Li, we know what we want to have.”
“We will take the cute grey rabbit with a pink nose!” Mr. Li was so surprised. “How did you choose a rabbit?”
“We both like rabbits, and he looks so sad, and we know he is waiting for someone to take him.”
Mr. Li got the rabbit the cage and some food to make sure they had everything they would need. “Do you
have a name picked out for him?” Jill said, “We are going to call him ‘Double love’.” Mr. Li laughed, and the girls
carried Double love to his new home. After going back home, they set up his cage in the living room, checked on
him to be sure he was happy, and played with him often. The girls’ dream of getting a pet finally came true!

university to become engineers. There was just one problem. They came from a poor family in a small town that
was far from any university. The only way they could make their dream come true was if one of them worked in
the local mine (矿井) to pay for the other to go to school. And when the first one became an engineer, he would
pay for the other to go to school.
They flipped (threw) a coin. Simon won. But he said, “I can’t go. You are much smarter than me.” Pedro
convinced him to go. Simon headed off to school and Pedro worked hard to make money to pay for his schooling.
Simon was the hardest-working student there. He soon became known as the best student. But he always told
people that his brother was the really smart one. He would proudly show everyone Pedro’s designs for machines.
Then, near the end of the first year of school, there was an accident at the mine. Pedro was hurt quite badly
and would never be able to work in the mine again. Without money, Simon had to quit school. He took care of his
brother, and they were both terribly sad.
One day, a car pulled up to their little house and out came Simon’s teacher.“Simon, we want you to come
back,” said his teacher. Simon was shocked. “I’m sorry,” he said, “but I can’t leave my brother.” The teacher
replied, “You won’t have to. I’ve seen Pedro’s designs. And he is too smart for us not to accept him.”
Soon, Pedro regained his health, and the two brothers went to school together. They became great engineers
and helped build many buildings in their country. They also helped others from the little town go to school.

Henry was always interested in books and ideas. He seldom cared about other people. They only made fun of
him. They were also green-eyed because he was so smart, or so he thought. It seemed that Henry knew everything
—except one thing. He didn’t know how to get along with other people.
He made his parents believe that school was a waste of time, so he began home schooling with private
teachers. He dreamed of being the youngest student to enter university, and he sent letters to famous professors
(教授) to see if it was possible.
One day, the doorbell rang. When Henry opened the door, there was his idol—a famous professor he
respected—Ralph Brown. Henry was so excited that he could hardly speak. The two talked for a long time and
they also exchanged ideas. The professor was surprised at what this young boy knew.

three things. I want you to learn how to use them. It is not very simple and you’ll need another person to help you.
Experiment and learn how to use them, and I’ll be back in a week to see how you’re doing. Then, I’ll have another
test for you.”

BOOK OF THE WEEK
Heidi
By Johanna Spyri
The novel explores themes (主题) of nature, friendship and kindness. Heidi is a little Swiss girl, whose
honesty influences those around her. She goes to live with her grandfather in the Alps. She quickly learns to love
her new life with him. But then Heidi must be sent away again to Frankfurt, to be the friend of Clara, a girl who is
sick and cannot walk...
Chapter Five
Her first day in Frankfurt was a strange day for Heidi, but even stranger for Ms. Rottenmeier, the
housekeeper.
At first Heidi couldn’t think where she was. When she woke up, jumped from the big white bed and ran to
the window, she saw neither the snow on high mountains nor the little stream winding below. All she saw was
brick walls and houses. There was no sound of the wind in the trees-only the sound of carriages (马车) rattling
over the stone streets outside.
Heidi felt as though she had been locked up in a cage. But Ms. Rottenmeier felt that she was locked up with a
strange, wild child. The child knew nothing of how to behave in a well—run house. She was late to meals. Her
clothes were not correct. She made friends with the servants.
But Clara had become much more cheerful since Heidi’s arrival. She liked talking to Heidi about life in the
mountains and about Heidi’s grandfather. For Clara the next few days were much less dull than usual.
Heidi was less happy. Tomorrow, she kept thinking, I really must go home. But one thing pleased her. Every
day she took more rolls from the table and hid them in her room. She was saving them for Granny.Granny’s teeth
were no longer able to chew the hard, black bread which was all she had, and Heidi planned to take back to her
the lovely soft rolls as a present.
At last, one day, she started for home. But at the door she met Ms. Rottenmeier.“Where are you going? I have
strictly forbidden (禁止) you to go outside by yourself!” Ms.Rottenmeier said.

“I’m only going home,” said Heidi. “I’ve been away too long. My goats must be missing me and...”

Once upon a time, there were four seeds who were good friends. The wind took them into the air and they
finally landed on an open space in a jungle. There they remained hidden in the ground, hoping they would be able
to grow up and become beautiful trees.
But when the first seed began germinating (发芽), they realized that it wouldn’t be such an easy task. In that
area, there lived a group of monkeys, and the smallest ones would amuse themselves by throwing bananas at any
plant that was starting to grow.
They threw so many bananas at the first seed that it was almost split (分裂) in two. And when it told the
other seeds what had happened, they all agreed it would be better to wait for that group of monkeys to move on
before they tried to grow.
Then, the first seed thought she should at least attempt (尝试) it. And when she tried, she was pelted with
bananas, and was left folded over. The other seeds told her to stop trying, but that little seed was so determined to
become a tree that she tried again and again.
So, for days, weeks and months, the little plant was attacked by the monkeys, and she was always doubled
over (在腰部弯曲).

And then, one day, she didn’t double over. She was hit by one banana after another, but none of them
managed to make her bend. She had taken so many blows, and been doubled over so many times, that she was full
of hard knots and scars. They helped her grow stronger, and finally, it could withdraw (承受) the impact of a
banana. And the brave seed was already so well developed that the little monkeys couldn’t uproot her from the
ground, either. So there she stayed, growing, growing and growing.
Thanks to the strength of her trunk, she could continue to overcome all difficulties, until she became the most
majestic tree in the jungle. Meanwhile, her friends remained hidden in the ground. They were still hoping that
those horrible monkeys would one day lose interest in throwing bananas at them. They never realized that those
animals were strengthening them by throwing bananas at them. This would prepare the seeds for all the problems
they would meet in their lives.

A walk in the forest
I’m Grace. I live on a farm with my parents and take Benji, my pet dog, for a walk most days after school.
Wednesday
As I was going through the forest, it started raining hard. Suddenly, I slipped and fell on the ground. Ouch!
That hurt. Then a voice said, “Are you all right? That was a bad fall.” I looked up and saw a boy about my age. He
helped me up. “I haven’t seen you at school. Do you live near here?” I asked. “No, I’m from Manchester,” he said.
“Listen! I have to go. Are you OK to walk home? Do you need help?” “No, I’m fine. Thanks!” I said, then the boy
walked away.
Back home, Mum was watching the news.
“Hi, Grace. Have you heard about this boy, Mark?” she asked. “No, what boy?” I said. “A boy from
Manchester. He’s run away from home. Look! This is his dad.”
There was a man on TV sitting next to a policeman. He was crying and looked as if he hadn’t slept for days.
Then they showed a photo of the missing boy. I knew him. It was the boy in the forest. He was Mark. “Should I
say something? No, I mustn’t say anything. Maybe he has a good reason. I have to talk to him first.” I said to
myself.
Thursday
I found Mark in the forest. I said, “Your dad was on TV last night. The police are looking for you.” He
looked shocked and asked, “Did you say anything? Have you told them?” “No,” I said. “I wanted to talk to you
first. Why have you run away?” He looked at the ground and said, “I had a big argument with my dad. My mum
died four years ago. It was very hard for me and for Dad. But then he met someone new. Mel’s her name. She

Education Is the Key
Reporter: Hello, everyone. Besides helping animals in pain, the SPCA also runs a very active education
program in schools. Meet Ms Ann Lek, our Education Officer. Her job is to help more people understand animals
so that they will be treated (对待) better.
Reporter: What is your job duty in the SPCA, Ann?
Ms Ann Lek: I give talks at schools and in many other places to help people learn more about animals. I pay visits
at our shelter once a week to teach people what they should consider before getting a pet. Besides weekly talks
and visits, I also help educate the public about responsible pet ownership.
Reporter: When did you decide to become an Education Officer?
Ms Ann Lek: I always love animals and want to make this world a better place for them. I started as a volunteer
with the organization, when I was still attending university. It is so enjoyable to work with those who feel the

Reporter: Which misunderstanding of pets would you like to change most?
Ms Ann Lek: I really hate it when people are unhappy when I talk about pets, or when taxi drivers refuse to take
me because I’m travelling with my dog. Whenever I speak to them and ask why, they always give the same

(2024·上海金山·二模)Clara Prado has worked as an English teacher for more than twenty years. In a
recent interview, she told us her own experience of learning and teaching English.
How did you learn English yourself?
I started learning English when I was about six or seven years old. A new language school opened near my
home. I started attending classes twice a week. I enjoyed these classes. During my teenage years, I attended
several international youth meetings. I also went to Australia as an exchange student. I learned a lot from
communicating with native English speakers.
What’s the best part of teaching English for you?
I have met many wonderful people throughout my career. Teachers are a fun group of people. They often get
excited about a challenge. Many teachers are creative. They almost always find a way to make things work. I’ve
learned a lot from them.
And then there are the students. There is nothing better in life than to see them realize their dreams and
achieve something they have worked hard for.
What suggestions do you always give to your students?
As a language learner, you have to be comfortable with making mistakes. The goal is not to be perfect. It’s to

What challenges do you think learners face today?
I think the biggest challenge today is the unknown. Technology and many other things are changing fast. We
have no way of knowing what will happen in 10, 20 or 50 years from now, so how can you prepare yourself or
others? Well, you can’t be prepared for everything. But you can equip yourself with creativity and the ability to

An Unusual Garden
The old 1986 truck was a gift from his grandfather. It worked, but it used a lot of gas. Ian Cheney looked at
his grandfather’s truck and thought of a farm. As in other large cities, there is not much space to grow food in
New York. Yet Cheney wanted a vegetable garden. Many farmers in New York have found creative ways to grow
vegetables, such as rooftop gardens, community gardens in old parking lots, and even a floating garden in the
Hudson River. Cheney, however, didn’t have access to any of these spaces. So the old truck was a practical
solution. The back of the truck provided him with the space he needed.
So Cheney set to work. First, he drilled holes in the truck bed—allowing water to pass through. Then he
laid down a recycled plastic mat. The soil came next—a special lightweight variety. He made sure that everything
was organic. Cheney preferred organic because he wanted to grow vegetables without chemicals. Then he planted
lettuce, herbs, spinach, and tomatoes. Finally, he watered and waited.
When the food was ready to pick, Cheney drove the truck from one urban neighborhood to another. He
gave away some of the vegetables. He sold the rest to friends and neighbors. Everywhere he parked, passersby
stopped and talked about the beautiful vegetable garden in the back of the truck.
Cheney strongly believes that people are better off eating more local food—that is, food grown close to
where they live. Local food has both environmental and health advantages. It reduces “food miles”. The term food

miles refers to the distance between where you produce food and where you sell it. A lot of the food in large
supermarkets travels hundreds of miles to get to your dinner table. This has an economic and environmental cost.
Then there is the question of nutrition—food that helps you grow and be healthy. The nutritional benefits of
vegetables decrease over time. So eating food within a few days of harvesting is healthier for you.
Cheney knows that his truck farm cannot solve the problem of the lack of fresh food in some
neighborhoods. Yet, like rooftop gardens, it could be part of the solution. As Cheney says, “If we can grow food in
the back of an 1986 Dodge pickup, we can definitely find better ways to grow more fresh produce.”
73.The old 1986 truck from Ian Cheney’s grandfather is working properly, isn’t it?
74.Where does Cheney plant his vegetables?
75.Why did Cheney drill holes in the truck bed?
76.How did Cheney deal with the vegetables he grew?
77.What are the two reasons Cheney suggests people eat more local food?
78.What do you think of farmers in New York in the passage? Give your reasons.
【答案】73.No, it isn’t. 74.The back of the truck. 75.To allow water to pass through. 76.He
gave away some of the vegetables and sold the rest to friends and neighbors. 77.Cheney suggests people eat
more local food because it reduces environmental impact and is much healthier to people. 78.These farmers
in New York deserve high praise. These innovative approaches not only enrich the city’s green spaces but also
provide fresh and healthy vegetables for urban residents, which has a positive impact on both the sustainable
development of the city and the quality of life for its residents.

Jin Ying, 25, is a lover of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She took part in a three-month training
course on acupuncture and tuina (针灸推拿) in the winter of 2023 at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine.
Jin’s life has been different since the training. She changed her life habits after learning the Five Elements
theory (五行学说). For example, she avoided sweating too much during exercise in winter because the cold of
winter means people should slow down, according to TCM. For her, learning these skills and theories was not
about becoming a TCM doctor but rather about accepting a new lifestyle.
She is not an unusual example of young people loving TCM. A survey by China Youth Daily showed that
93.3 percent of the 1,000 young people had tried different TCM treatments.

related to the elderly,” said Ma Huifang, a TCM doctor at Guoyitang, a TCM hospital affiliated with Beijing
University of Chinese Medicine.
Between Western medicine and TCM, young people often choose TCM “due to its effectiveness,”
according to Ma.
Some people question why TCM treats the same illnesses with different prescriptions (处方). “This is
actually an advantage of TCM, rather than a shortcoming, as it can be a more accurate treatment for different
patients,” Ma explained.

As you probably know, the town council (议会) has got £1 million to spend in improving the town’s
facilities for young people and we’re looking for great ideas on how to spend the money well. Post your ideas in
the forum (论坛) below and let us know how we can make life better for you.
Here are some ideas.
There’s nothing for teenagers to do in this town, especially at night. Can we use the money to build a
youth club? Somewhere with a pool table and a table tennis table, perhaps. We need somewhere to play happily
and hang out safely in the evenings. —Daisy, 15
I think the best use for the money is to build a playground in the town park. It should have lots of rides
for the young kids. I’d like to have a skateboard park for a start and maybe if there is enough money, we can have
a climbing wall, too. —Luke, 13
As I’m only 14, I can’t drive, so I go everywhere on my bike. But the roads are dangerous and many
motorists drive too fast. How about spending the money in building more cycle lanes? We could also put in more
speed cameras and zebra crossings, too. This will make life safer for all our citizens, not just the young people. —
Liz, 14

How about a big billboard at the entrance to the town that reads, “TEEN WARNING—there’s nothing to
do here!” —Sadie, 16
This probably sounds like a boring idea, but can’t we use some of the money to buy more litter bins? I
feel ashamed of our town when I see much litter on the ground. We need to tidy up our town quickly! —Jack, 15
Our high street is full of empty shops because everyone just shops at the new shopping centre outside of
town or online. Why don’t we use the money to turn some of these empty shops into an arts centre? It can have
studios where we can draw and paint or learn how to make films. We can also have a music studio where local
bands can record music cheaply. —Alex, 17
85.How much money has the town council got?
86.What do Daisy and Sadie think of the town?
87.What does Luke want to have most in his idea?
88.In Liz’s opinion, what should the money be spent in?
89.Whose idea do you like best if you are an art lover?

Dear Mrs Wu,
I love video games and I develop my own games. It’s my favourite hobby. My parents were very
encouraging at first. The day I started secondary school, they changed their mind. They now suggest that I give up
video games altogether because study should be my priority (优先考虑的事项). What’s more, they don’t even
allow me to go out with my friends at night. Every time they do that, I act like I don’t care. But in fact, I am quite
angry and upset because they simply have no respect for me and my needs. What can I do?Sincerely yours,
Jason
Dear Jason,
You must be feeling very stressed these days. I’m glad you wrote to me for help. However, you should keep
calm and talk to your parents about the benefits of your hobby. I can see why your parents are against video-
gaming—it was seen as a useless pastime (娱乐活动) back in the time when your parents were young. The best
idea may be to tell them that it is good training for new tech jobs like being a video game developer or drone
photographer (无人机摄影师). Also, it is a good way to have a rest after a long school day. Try pointing out real-
life examples to them to support your idea. Meanwhile, you should also make sure your hobby doesn’t get in the
way of your school performance.
As for your parents’ not allowing you to go out with your friends, it may be a good idea to open up to them
about your private life. For example, you can ________. This may help them change their mind. Meanwhile, show
them you are a responsible person who understands their worries, and will not let them down. If you can do this, I
don’t believe they will be so hard on you. Remember, you mustn’t lose your cool, as that would be immature (不
成熟的). Cheers!
