There are some very good inventions which deserve to be better known, even though I admit
that some of them are crazy. Let’s have a look at some of them and see if you agree that they deserve
to be more successful.
The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if
a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much
alcohol in their breath, the car wouldn’t start. It sounds like a great idea to me, but people said that
they might need to drive the car in an emergency even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another
idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He
linked to TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was generated by the
bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to ride very hard. I found another invention
on the Internet was designed to encourage good habits. Believe it or not, this invention was an
ashtray which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The ‘voice’ of the ashtray was activated by the
heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke.
One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The
idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate(使充气)a huge plastic ball all around
the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while
you rode the bike inside the ball! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a
built-in radio so you can listen to sports programmes all day with your hands
free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of
robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you
could press a button and the robot would do ‘high fives’ with you! Fantastic!
I wonder if you have any brilliant ideas for inventions like these.
69. The purpose of blowing into a bag before driving is to ___________.

A. There will be a fire soon B. Please stop smoking
C. Smoking does harm to your health D. Smoking can make you relaxed
72. The bicycle which can cross rivers ___________.
A. is used to reduce the traffic on the bridge
B. travels under the water
C. is considered the most popular invention
D. needs to be ridden in a plastic ball
73. There are ___________inventions mentioned in this passage.
A. Four B. Five C. Six D. Seven

Hi there!
Can you help me? I’m doing a project at school. The title?‘Will life be better in
2100?’What do you think? Thanks you for your ideas!
Josh
a. Hi Josh! I think life will be great. People will live in‘smart houses’. A
central computer will control the temperature, the lights, everything!
These houses will be ecological and use solar energy and
recycled water. A‘smart’mirror in the bathroom(that's right, it’s a mirror with a
computer!)will check your health. And guess what? Robots will cook and do the housework.
Maya
b. Pollution is a big problem today, but will be a bigger problem in 100 years. So people won’t use cars with
petrol. They will drive in electric cars on underground roads. And there will be electric buses with
computers for drivers! The best thing? People will be able to travel in time. Now that will be
exciting! Rosie
c. Hi Josh. Life will be better in 2100-in space! People will live on the Moon and Mars in special cities.
They will grow food and send it to the Earth in a huge space craft. Space stations will orbit the Earth
and control the climate. There will also be holidays in space! How cool is that?
Brandon
d. Will life be different in 100 years? Yes, it will. Will life be better? No, it won’t! Climate change will
cause floods and droughts. Rich people will live for a long time, maybe 200 years! But life won’t be
easy for most people. They won’t have food and water. Faith
e. Well, Josh, the good news is… there won’t be any schools! Students will have lessons at home on their
computers. They’ll be in contact with other students all over the world in a ‘virtual’ classroom. The
bad news is…teachers will still give us homework in the future! Elliot

Every day, people pack their belongings and move to new place. Why do people move? There
are many reasons. Look around you. Do you know someone who has moved? Maybe they came
from a rural area, or from a nearby city or town. Perhaps they came from another country. It’s
possible that you moved to the city that you live in now. Let’s look at the following important reasons
people move.
Jobs
People move to find jobs and a better life. Sometimes, people move from rural areas to urban
areas, such as cities, to get a job. In 1990, about a quarter of the people in China lived in cities.
Today, over half of the Chinese people live in cities. People find a better way of life in other
countries, too. In the 1950s, immigrants from Europe moved to Brazil to work in factories.
Around the world, people move abroad to find new jobs and a better life.
_______
When another city has good services, people want to move there. For example, families want
to live in a city with good hospitals and schools. Sometimes people move from a city to areas
called suburbs. Suburbs are near the outside of the city. They are quiet and have wide streets.
Suburbs have more space for schools, hospitals, clinics, shopping malls, and zoos. Families with
young children like to live in suburbs.
New Experiences
Finally, people move when they want a change in their lives. Sometimes, older people move
to places with better weather. Some students go to universities in another country to learn about
other places. Whatever the reason is, people often move to find new experiences and a better life.
As you can see, people move for many reasons. Maybe someday you or someone you know
will move, too!

Radio station guide
Live Radio Gordon Lee hosts the young people's phone-in programme.
Your Say--Phone- Today’s topic: Understanding the opposite sex.
in Monday 14 April Ring 5500 6069 to have your say on the similarities and
5-6 p.m. differences between boys and girls.
(Calls are free from landlines. S1. 10 per minute from mobiles)
Transcript
Gordon: Welcome to the show. I'm sure everyone will have something to say about today's topic:
Understanding the opposite sex. Boys like computers and football, while girls like talking
and shopping. Is that true? Or is it nonsense? Let's hear from our first caller, Laura.
Laura: I think girls like to chat and talk about everything. This helps us develop better language skills. In my
school, all the best students at languages are girls.
Gordon: Well, research does suggest that girls have better language abilities. These can be seen even a t
the age of three, when girls can express opinions better and know double the number of
words as boys.
Lanni: I like shopping with friends and looking for clothes together.
Gordon: In general, girls have a more visual memory. Perhaps that is why they like shopping. They
remember colours and shapes better, and also names and faces.
Joe: My mother keeps telling me that my room is a mess, but my sister's bedroom is always tidy.
Gordon: Girls can usually record details better, like the order and position of things and furniture in a
room. So, when any of those are not in their place, girls can notice at once.
Nathan: Boys are stronger than girls. Girls often need help with carrying heavy objects. We can run
faster too.
Gordon: Well, boys do have proportionally (成比例地) more muscle for their body weight. In general, they
can carry more weight and can move more quickly than girls of the same size.
Julius: We have better eyesight than girls. I can see the number of the bus that is coming long before
my sister can.
Gordon: That's true. Boys tend to have better long-distance vision than girls. However, we often don't see
things that are right under our noses!

A. parents B. young people

Most people cannot choose their jobs. T hey only have their jobs forced upon ( 被迫 ) them .
This may be because they haven't enough training for any other job, or because of economic situation,
or because they live in a place where there is a limited choice of jobs, or because their fathers and
grandfathers have always followed a certain occupation. The Indian born of farmer parents in a
village has, for example, few opportunities of becoming anything but a farmer.
But if one is lucky enough to be able to choose the job one is going to do, how should one
make one's choice? One's choice clearly depends on what one wants to get out of one's job.
Some people believe that nobody can do a job well if they do not enjoy it. But this is probably
true only of certain types of work. And there are those who have an ability for turning their job into
something that is an enjoyable way of earning their living (挣钱生计), but who do not really do
their work well. Some doctors, for example, who become rich and famous men are in fact not owning
humanity (人性) which is necessary in their job, and may even not be especially skilled at their job.
So are some lawyers. Perhaps many of the best doctors, lawyers, and teachers spend their lives
working so hard for others that do not have time to become rich and famous. One must decide, when
choosing a job, whether one wants to do a job for its own sake (为工作本身)or for the rewards
(报酬)it offers.

When our son Bradley was ten, the new bicycle he had received as a birthday gift was stolen.
Owing a bike was a big deal to our children when they were little. They spent hours and hours, day
after day, on their bikes, riding up and down the footpath, and at the front of the house. We also
rode together as a family a lot.
Bicycling was a great way to get the kids out of the house and into the fresh air without spending
any money.
Bradley discovered that his bike had been stolen from our backyard, when he and his sister
went outside for a morning ride. He couldn’t believe that someone would do this.
He got a large piece of cardboard, painted a sign begging for the bike to be returned, and
tied the sign to the letterbox. The following morning when I went out to collect the mail, I found a
white envelope with the magical words “Buy yourself a new bike”. It was a $100 banknote inside.
We were very moved that someone had the heart to do this. We’ve never been able to thank the
person but we think that it may be one of our wonderful neighbors. Bradley painted a big “Thank
you” on the sign and we left it outside for a couple of weeks afterwards in case it was someone who
drove down our street.
A delighted Bradley was able to buy a new bicycle. As the years went on, bicycles became
bigger and more expensive but were still important for those family bicycle riders. Now the kids
have grown up and cars have taken the place of their bikes. Bradley is 25. Sometimes I miss the
days when receiving a bicycle was the best thing in the world to them.
All these years later, we are still thankful to that amazingly kind stranger who made Bradley’s
wish come true. We were a young family with three little children and it meant a lot to us. We still
talk about it and, even now, wonder who he was.

Passage I Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
It is an interesting story about a girl named Alice, who follows the White Rabbit down a rabbit hole and finds
herself in Wonderland. She not only finds the White Rabbit, but also meets other animals such as the Dormouse
and the Caterpillar. During her adventure, Alice eats and drinks things that make her change in size. At last, Alice
enters a garden, where she happens to see a trial(审判). The Knave of Hearts is accused of(被指控) stealing the
Queen of Hearts’tarts(甜馅饼), while the King of Hearts is the judge. As Alice argues with the Queen, the Queen
becomes angry with Alice and orders her men to kill Alice. In the end, Alice grows to a huge size and knocks over
the playing cards. Suddenly, Alice wakes from her dream.
The classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, an English author, was fantastic and
entertaining. It took you to a world of fantasy. The entire storyline is so imaginative. Alice, with her pleasant
personality is attractive. It is one of the classics needed to complete your bookshelf.

Passage 2 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
It is an interesting story about a girl named Dorothy, who is taken away from her home in a storm and finds
herself in the Land of Oz. Dorothy, together with her companions the Tin Woodman who wants a heart, the
Scarecrow who wants a brain and the Cowardly Lion who wants courage, journeys in search of the wizard, in order
to return home. After facing many difficulties they successfully meet the Great Oz, who in fact is not a wizard.
However, the old man gives the Scarecrow a brain made of pins and needles, the Tin Woodman a heart made of
silk and filled with sawdust, and the Cowardly Lion a bottle of courage. In the end, Dorothy finally gets home to
where her aunt and uncle live. They are very glad to see her safe and sound.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum, is an enjoyable American classic .What I loved
most were Dorothy's trustworthy friends, who were always there when Dorothy needed help. Dorothy is also loved
by everyone for her sweetness and honesty. If you have not read it, why don't you give yourself a treat?
