Schools are now running remote (远程) lessons for more than
90 per cent of NSW students because of the COVID-19(冠状病
毒)crisis, a situation likely to l 81 for months. The NSW
Department of Education says the lessons are designed to be done
without parents’ too much caring.
But parents are still under the pressure of trying to support
their children's learning, saying they have been given an i 82 task.
One parent said she spent the week working at her job, then the weekend catching up on all the
work her children had missed, doing housework at night. Another single mother wakes at 3 a.m. to
do her paid work so she can supervise (监督) her children d 83 the day.
"Do they understand that parents are fighting for our lives, our jobs, and our companies as
well?" another parent said. "I'm a working mum. If I don't do my job, I may l 84 it. I know
things had to be done in a hurry. But parents have been thrown in the deep end."
Yvette McDonald, from the inner west, has two young children at a public primary school,
which issues (发布) written lessons and requires typed, o 85 communication, such as being
present for roll call (点名) at the b 86 and end of each day. She has asked the NSW Department
of Education to relax those rules, saying they were difficult to carry out.
"Parents are already at breaking point and we haven't even gone into formal lockdown," she
said. "Many of us are managing crisis at work, but then on top of that we're schooling our children as
well. We feel as though we're failing, but we're not failing - we've been a 87 to do very difficult
things. We want to know what's essential and what's not."
D. Answer the questions. (根据以下内容回答问题。)(12分)
Half a year before graduation from college, my son began to seek a job. Due to the financial
crisis (危机), fewer companies would like to employ new staff. My son targeted a company that was
going to hire only one person while there were more than twenty people filling their resumes (简历).
After the interview, there would only be 3 who could enter the final round, which would later
decide one person to be employed. Everything seemed to go quite well and my son passed the first
round and entered the final round in a week.
On the day of the final interview, my son and other two candidates arrived at the interview place
on time, waiting for the test. Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably simple. The interviewer
only said to them, “All of you are very super. Please go home and wait for our notice. We will tellyou the result in 3 days. Good luck to all of you!” On the morning of the third day, my son received
a text from the company shortly after breakfast that he was not employed. We all felt very
disappointed.
In nightfall that day, my son suddenly told me excitedly on the phone, “Dad, I have been
employed!” Greatly surprised, I could not wait to ask him, “What’s the whole matter?” My son told
me that he received another text saying that he was employed. Actually, the first text sent to my son
was also part of the test in the interview. Three men received the same text this morning and only my
son’s reply was “Thank you.” while the others said “Goodbye.”.
Only then did I know that my son’s “hope” came in that way. That is, when you feel
disappointed, do not forget to say “Thank you.” to the one who disappoints you. Saying “Thank
you.” shows respect for others’ work and shows you are generous. Therefore, while under the same
condition, you will get the upper hand in terms of opportunities compared with others!
88. When did the author’s son begin to seek a job?
89. Would many companies like to employ new staff because of the financial crisis?
90. How many people applied for the job?
91. How did the author feel after being told the news in nightfall that day?
92. What’s the difference between the author’s son’s answer and the others’?
93. What do you think of the interview? What have you learnt from it?
