Many doctors say sleep can change our health. If we want our bodies to work well, we need sleep. If people
don’t have enough sleep, they can suffer from depression and illness such as heart disease.
The most obvious (明显的) effect of not having enough sleep is to make us weaker and it makes it harder to
fight illness. In other words, people who do not sleep enough are more likely to get sick or ill.
Studies in the USA have found that 60 percent of the adults often have sleep problems. Among them, more
than 20 percent say that they feel sleepy in the daytime and that makes their lives difficult. At least 40 million
people in the USA suffer from sleep problems that need treatment, but very few of them actually go to a doctor
about it.
So what are the things that affect sleep? Well, firstly, there is noise. If there are noises such as barking dogs,
dripping (滴水) taps or loud music, you will probably find it difficult to sleep. What is interesting is that womenseem to notice more than men, while young children do not notice noise so much as adults.
If you are sitting on a chair, you will find it very difficult to sleep. But you will probably have no problem
falling asleep if you are on a bed. This is another thing that affects sleep. We need to be horizontal and we need to
have enough space.
A third thing affecting sleep is temperature. You may have noticed that you have difficulty sleeping if it is very
hot or cold.
Altitude can change the way we sleep as well. If you are at an altitude of over 4,000m, you need to breathe
differently because you don’t have as much oxygen. It will take you about two weeks to get used to this.
If you want to sleep well, please do not exercise before you go to bed or drink coffee. We hope this helps.
Sleep well!

Everything changed when I was four years old. My father died. After that, my mother and I had to move back
to a small village in Alabama, where my mother grew up. We lived in a small house with Aunt Sandy, my mother’s
elder sister. This was a time when being a single parent was still considered unusual.
When I was small, there was a children’s book called The Happy Family, and it was a real piece of work, dad
worked all day long at the office, mom cooked in the kitchen, and the brother and sister always had friends playing
around. The image (形象) of the family in this book was typical (典型的) of the time. It looked nothing like my
family, but luckily that wasn’t the way I heard it. The way my Aunt Sandy read it to me made the story really funny.
Kind-hearted and open-minded, Aunt Sandy was the one who played baseball with me, who took me
horseback riding, who took me to the father-son dinners and who gave me lessons on how to drive, she believes
that anything unusual was probably good for me. She offered to help me go to Africa to work as a volunteer. That
was my most important experience.
As a young girl, Aunt Sandy always planned to have a large number of children of her own, but she never got
married. This meant that she was free to spend all her time taking care of me. Many people say we have a lot in
common. She always afforded me to do my best and it makes me believe that I could do anything with my life that
I wanted if I tried hard enough.
For more than fifty years, Aunt Sandy didn’t and still don’t think of herself. Unless she is forced to come up to
the front, my aunt will stand in the back in family photos, and she doesn’t think that her efforts have made much
difference. She won my respect because 83 .
