A. Choose the best answer(根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案): ( 12分)
Every country in the world has a flag. A flag is a piece of cloth with a picture or
pattern on it. The flag is a symbol that stands for the country. It is a custom in many
places for people to fly or hang a flag. The flag tells something about the country and its
culture. This may be about its land, its history, or the things that the people do there.
Many flags have patterns of stripes(条纹). The flag of Italy has a green stripe, a
white stripe and a red stripe. Each stripe tells something about Italy. The white stripe is a
symbol of Italy’s snowy mountains. Some flags show pictures. The flag of Canada has a
picture of a red maple(枫树) leaf, which is a symbol of the maple trees in Canada. The
Mexican flag has both a pattern of stripes and a picture. The picture shows an eagle
eating a snake. This picture comes from a very old Mexican story.
A flag may also tell about a country’s past. The American flag is called the Stars
and Stripes. It has a pattern of fifty stars and thirteen stripes. The fifty stars are a
symbol of the fifty states in the country, and the thirteen stripes are a symbol of the
country’s first thirteen colonies(殖民地).
However, a flag may be a symbol of a group, a school, or an event like the
Olympics. The flag of the Olympics shows five rings of different colors that connect.
Each ring is a symbol for a part of the world that joins in the Olympics. The Red Crossis a group that helps people who are in trouble. If a person sees the Red Cross flag,
which has a red cross against a white background, he knows he can ask for help. People
may fly a flag as a custom on a holiday. Children’s Day in Japan is a holiday when the
country wishes for children’s happiness. It is a custom on this day to fly a flag with a
picture of a fish.
Flags are also used as a way to talk. A flag with patterns can be very helpful to
people who do not speak the same language. Sailors on ships use flags to talk to sailors
on other ships. They may not speak the same language, but they know what the patters
mean. A flag with blue and white squares says “no.” A flag with five stripes that are
blue, white, and red says “yes.”

I used to watch her from my kitchen window. She seemed so 7 5 as she made her way
through the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and
I would often watch the kids as they played during break. I remember the first day I saw her
playing basketball. I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to
shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no
one could. I began to notice her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone.
One day I asked her why she practiced so much. She said immediately, “I want to go to
college. The only way I can go is to get a scholarship(奖学金). I am going to play college
basketball. I want to be the best. My Daddy tells me 76 the dream is big enough, the facts
don’t count.” Well, I had to give it to her—she was so determined. I watched her through those
junior high years and into high school. Every week, she led her school team to 7 7 .
One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head in her arms. I walked across
the street and sat down in the cool grass beside her. 7 8 I asked what was wrong. “Oh, I am
just not tall enough.” came a soft reply. The coach told her that at 5’5” she would probably
never get to play for a top ranked team—much less offered a scholarship—so she should stop
79 college. I could feel her disappointment. I asked her if she had talked to her dad about it
yet. She told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the
power of a dream. He told her that if she truly wanted a scholarship and that nothing could stop
her except one thing — her own 8 0 .
The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, she
was offered a scholarship and on the college team. She was going to get the college education that
she had looked forward to.

It is a great but difficult project to set up a permanent(永久
的)human settlement on Mars. Over 200,000 volunteers from more
than 120 countries have applied to take a one-way trip to Mars.
The project, run by a Dutch company named Mars One, aims
to send a group of volunteers to Mars, and because of the
physiological(生理上的) change in the human body after a stay on Mars, there’d be no
chance of c 81 back. So it’s only a one-way trip! However, that hasn’t stop
volunteers becoming one of Mars’ first citizens. “This is turning out to be the most welcome job
in history,” says Bas Lansdorp, co-founder of Mars One.
Day-to-day life on Mars will be not easy. The daily work will i 82 building
greenhouses or doing some research--- all in a lonely environment.
Mars is not f 83 to life. Its atmosphere is so thin that it
won’t protect you from harmful radiation(辐射)from the sun. You can’t
breathe the air and it is very cold on Mars, with an average temperature
of around -50°C. There’s no running water on the surface of Mars. The
water is frozen or hidden u 8 4 .
But Mars One says the project is not looking for volunteers with some skill, such as a
science degree.
I 85 , they are looking for people who have “a deep sense of purpose and
responsibility”. As the first group of people living on Mars, volunteers should be
“willing to build and keep a healthy r 86 with the Earth”. They also want volunteers
who are“ curious, creative and good at finding ways of dealing with all kinds of
problems”.
The volunteers will receive at least eight years’ training b 87 they leave Earth, the
company says. The first group of 24 volunteers is set to fly to Mars in 2024.
