Arthur sat at the desk in his room, pencil in hand. He had to write a story for his English class by Friday.
"I don't know what to 16 about," he complained to his dog Toby, who was
asleep at his feet. Arthur was talkative when speaking to his friends, yet he had
trouble finding words when he had to write
By bedtime Arthur had drawn a picture of Toby smiling. He had drawn a
tree with its branches blowing in the strong wind. He had also written a note asking his friend Lee to go to the
movies on Saturday. But he had not written a single word of his story.
On Wednesday, Mrs. Solomon, Arthur's 17 teacher, asked the class to hand in the first draft of their
stories. His heart sinking, Arthur handed in the only work he had — the page with his name, the

Toby. The dog was running after him down the busy street, barking. The sound was filled with blame. Mike felt
guilty (愧疚的) because he had left Toby outside. He turned and headed home with Toby running beside him.
Mike let Toby in the 25 just as the rain started to pour down."
Arthur had a story in the end. The last thing he did was to write his name proudly at the top of the page.

I will always remember my experiences in the United States. I went to an American college a year ago. Yet I
did not know the real American society社会) until I was hurt in a car accident because after the accident I had to
see a doctor and go to court(法院).
After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and decided to repay him one
day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was amazed. He had good reason tocharge(索钱) me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsible(负有责任的) for
my accident, I’d have to have a good lawyer(律师). And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now
that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair(合理的) that I should pay him. But every day I went to
see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop
treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. I went to see him four times. The final
examination(检查) report only had ten lines(行), and it cost me another $215. My lawyer was all smiles the first
time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party(当事人) was
responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so
irresponsible that I decided to refuse his help. And he made me pay him $770.
Now I had to act as my own lawyer. I told the insurance(保险)company the date I was leaving America
because of my inexperience(缺少经验). Knowing that, they played for time and I left without getting a cent(一分
钱).
My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It
is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality. Secondly, foreigners are still not being equally
treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.

Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United
States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let
them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However,
homeless dogs lead a different kind of life. The expression “ to lead a dog's
life” describes a person who has an unhappy life. Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things,
like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very,
very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired.
Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person becomes successful at a particular time of
his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never
teach an old dog new skills. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things.
Husbands and wives use this doghouse term when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might
get angry at her husband for coming home late or forgetting their wedding anniversary (结婚纪念日). She might
tell him that he is in the doghouse. She may not treat him nicely until he says sorry.
