Dear students,
As is known to all, the threat to environment has increased alarmingly in recent
years, with the Earth suffering from such problems as energy shortage, air pollution and
so on. It is high time that we took action to improve the situation. Therefore, I'm writing to
make a proposal with the theme that we should do our parts to protect the environment.
Firstly, we should attach great importance to garbage sorting, through which we can
save our resources by recycling and decrease environmental pollution. Besides, we are
supposed to take an active part in voluntary work concerning environmental protection as
much as possible, which is necessary for us to do our parts to the cause. What's more,
I recommend that we should take public transport or ride bicycles for short distances
instead of driving a car so as to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
To sum up, it's our duty to make a contribution to protecting the environment. I
sincerely hope we could make joint efforts to make our mother earth a greener one.

Once home to China's emperors, the
Forbidden City was the very heart of the
country for five centuries. Even now, at the
age of 600, it still exerts a powerful pull on
the nation's heart.
Originally laid out by Emperor Yongle
between 1406 and 1420, the complex is
vast. With 9,000 rooms spreading out over
720,000 square metres, it is the largest
ancient palatial complex in the world.
But the palace isn't just a collection
of buildings. It is actually a huge museum
with the largest collection of imperial
treasures in the country. Despite being
looted by the Eight-Nation Alliance last
century, there are still many artifacts that
remain in the palace's possession. Most
can be found in the pavilions and side
buildings that act as mini-museums, with
rotating (轮换的) displays of exhibits.
Equally attractive are the courtyards
that separate the buildings. They are
fine places to imagine the splendor of
the palace and the lives of its former
inhabitants. Fourteen Ming and ten Qing
emperors called the Forbidden City home.
The intrigue, scandal and drama that went
on there has inspired countless films and
books.
For 500 years commoners were
prohibited from entering the Forbidden
City. Now, anyone willing to pay the entrance
fee can experience this extraordinary palace.
Despite the fact that only around half the
complex is open to visitors, it is still so vast
that you could easily spend several days
exploring it.
The Hall of Supreme Harmony (太和
殿) is the palace's biggest and most important
structure. This was the site of the imperial
court's grandest events including
coronations and royal birthdays.
Another important structure, originally
used for state banquets and later to
conduct imperial examinations, is the Hall
of Preserving Harmony (保和殿). Behind
the  hall,  a  17-metre  marble (大理石)
carriageway carved with dragons leads up
to the entrance. The royal's former living
quarters are at the back of the palace
grounds.
On the western and eastern sides of
the Forbidden City are an assortment of
libraries, temples, theatres and gardens.
At the northern end of the Forbidden City
is  the  Imperial  Garden ( 御花园), with
7,000 square metres of fine landscaping
including rockeries, walkways, pavilions
and ancient cypresses.

to Beijing.
Twenty-four emperors of the Ming and the Qing dynasties ruled from the
Forbidden City. The last dynasty fell in 1911, but Emperor Puyi still lived in the inner
court. It was not until 1925 that the complex buildings were changed into a museum.
Since then, the Palace has been opened to the public.
The Palace Museum is rectangular(长方形的) in shape, about 960 meters long from
north to south and 750 meters wide from west to east. There is a 10-meter-high wall,
encircled by a 52-meter-wide moat (护城河) . In the Ming Dynasty, the wood needed for
the building was brought mostly from Sichuan and Hunan Provinces, while in the Qing
Dynasty, it was cut from the northeast of China. Most of the stones were mined from the
suburban (郊外的) district of Fangshan and other districts. Construction of the Forbidden
City brought hardship to the laboring people.
The palace is the largest piece of ancient Chinese architecture still standing.
Some of the buildings were damaged by lightning and rebuilt in the Ming and Qing
dynasties. The palace has been expanded several times, but the original design was
kept. After liberation, some costly renovations (翻新) were done and the Palace Museum
is listed as one of the important historical sites under special preservation by the Chinese
government.

The Forbidden City is 720,000 square meters and is the largest palace in the world.
Around it, there are walls 10 meters high and a river 50 meters wide. The wall of the
Forbidden City has four watch-towers and four large gates, facing north, south, east and
west. Each of these gates has three doors.
Emperor Yongle built the Forbidden City in the shape of the universe. Beyond the
walls and gates were the two main parts of the Forbidden City: the front palace and the
inner palace.
In the front palace, the emperor ruled the Chinese empire(帝国), met government
officials and visitors, made laws and planned wars.
The inner palace was where the emperor and his family lived. Inside, the private
rooms of the emperor were forbidden(禁止)to all women except for the empress(皇后)on
her wedding day.
Symbols were important in the Forbidden City. There included the so-called five
elements: medal, wood, water, fire and earth.
There are many symbols of the five
elements in the Forbidden City. In Chinese tradition, water symbols help protect against
fire. During the Ming Dynasty, people worried about fires because all of the buildings in
the Forbidden City were made of wood.
Numbers were also important in the Forbidden City.
The lucky number nine is
everywhere. Its Chinese word jiu means forever in Chinese. Emperor Yongle wanted
his palace and his empire to last forever. There are 9,999 rooms in the City, and there
are always nine rows of nails(钉子)on each door.

实战演练
Speedy eaters are three times more likely to be too fat, a problem which is made
even worse by the popularity of fast food and the decrease of regular dining habits, some
Japanese researchers said on Wednesday.
The findings, published in the British Medical Journal, pay special attention to how
eating styles, and not just what or how much is eaten, can affect an obesity epidemic
(肥胖流行病) that is becoming more and more severe because of the speed of the
Western-style diet in many parts of the world.
The World Health Organization considers around 400 million people in the world as
too fat, 20 million of whom are under the age of five. The researchers are concerned that
the condition raises the risk of diseases like type 2 diabetes (糖尿病) and heart problems.
For their study, Hiroyasu Iso and the team at Osaka University asked more than 3000
Japanese volunteers (志愿者) who are 30 to 69 years old about their eating. About half of
the men and a little more than half of the women said they ate until full. About 45 percent
of the men and 36 percent of the women said they ate quickly.
Those who said they ate until full and ate quickly were three times more likely to be
fat than people in the "not eating until full and not eating quickly" group, the researchers
found.

They believe that the main causes are both the popularity of eating cheap fast food
and bad habits such as watching television while eating.
To fight against the bad effect of eating quickly and being too full that can lead to
obesity, parents should encourage children to eat slowly and in calm environments, the
study suggested.

小试牛刀
Some recent surveys show that the health conditions of many white collar employees
and office workers are rather critical. Death cases among white collar employees and
office workers are increasing year by year and these cases are generally believed to
have been caused by overwork and spending little time taking rest or doing exercise.
If their offices are within the distance of half an hour's walk, some office workers now
choose to go to work on foot. Ms. Deng, who works in a foreign enterprise in Beijing,
has been walking to her office for more than six months now. I usually have a tight work
schedule and can't find time to do exercise. So I choose to walk to work. As she said, if
the office is not far from home, most women would like to go to work on foot. Walking is
good for their health and can help them to keep good figures as well.
Apart from walking to office, one can also find time to do exercise when one is at
work. The simplest way is to abandon the lift. Mr. Wei, who works in the Passenger
Service Department at Shenzhen Airlines, is one of such men who frequently climb stairs
to his office. I only use the lift whenever I'm with my colleagues or my boss. Otherwise, I
would climb stairs instead of taking the lift.
In addition, some office workers try to find time to go to a gym at the end of a day.
Ms. Sang works in a law firm in Shenzhen. She goes to the gym several times a week
when she has the time. I go to the gym every weekend. During the weekdays, I will
also go there whenever I have the time. Ms. Sang and her husband both have a gym
membership card for a whole year. The cards cost them 3,000 yuan. However they think
it's worth it.
1. What is the best title of the passage? (No more than 8 words)

what are they? (No more than 15 words)

4. 范文赏析
Where there's a will, there's a way
As the proverb says "Where there's a will, there's a way", if a person hopes to be
successful in the future, he or she should have a strong will. I have an unforgettable life
experience which is a good evidence to this saying.
A few weeks ago, my father took me to climb Mount Tai. I was sweating all over and
became very tired, which made me very frustrated. At that moment, I almost gave up.
Thinking of the sunrise that I would see the next morning, I made up my mind to conquer
the mountain and made it eventually.
The experience reminds me of our studies. Although there are many "steps" ahead
of us, there is still hope like the sunrise in our hearts. So long as we hold fast to our ideals
and never give up, we are bound to achieve success.

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign
which said: "I am blind, please help." There were not 1 coins in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins 2 his pocket and dropped them
into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the
sign back so that 3 who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat 4 with coins. A lot more people were giving money to the blind
boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were.
The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one 5 changed my
sign this morning? What did you write?" The man said, "I only wrote the 6 . I
said what you said, 7 in a different way. I wrote: 'Today is a beautiful day, but I
cannot see it.'"
8 signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said
the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were 9 lucky that they
were not blind. Should we be 10 that the second sign was more effective?
Moral of the Story:
Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Think 11 and positively. When
life gives you 100 reasons to cry, 12 life that you have 1,000 reasons to smile.
Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the
future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear.
The most beautiful thing is 13 a person smiling. And even 14 is,
knowing that you are 15 reason behind it!

二、语法填空
That afternoon, a little girl ran into the middle of the road where the traffic was busy.
A truck passed her for left turn. Unaware of the danger she was 1 , the little girl
continued to run in the middle of the road.
The traffic lights changed, and more cars drove towards her, which made her
situation more 2 (danger), as she could get hit by many drivers who didn't
notice her 3 (stand) there. Suddenly, a man ran to her from across the road.
However, during this, a car 4 (speed) towards them and almost hit the man. He

THINKING How does Huawei manufacture its smartphones?

In a large, closed factory, a smartphone
production worker walks through the
120-meter factory line and explains how
Huawei manufactures its smartphones
from start to finish.
We are only allowed to take pictures
in two designated areas, but that doesn’t
really capture the enormity of each
production line. Imagine a long, cream-
colored facility that houses 35 different
production lines. Each line produces 2,400
smartphones in one day. Now multiply
that number by 34 and that's how many
devices that roll off the production line in
24 hours.
The tour guide tells us that over the
years, Huawei has learned to be more
efficient. In 2013, each production line had
86 workers and now, only 17 are assigned
to each line. Behind the downsizing was
a streamlined manufacturing process
that was aimed at making phones of
higher quality. This process begins with
the creation of the phone's motherboard.
Once it is soldered, laser printed and split,
the motherboard is transported to where
components are fitted. These components
range  from  the  phone's  processor,
memory chips, and various other parts
that allow the device to function. The
bottom half of each phone is then swiftly
processed through conveyor belts and
basic testing software is added. Fixtures
are added to the phone at this point in the
process, including the camera, the flash,
the battery, the screen and other parts.
After the phone goes through 10
hours of comprehensive reliability testing,
Huawei's final EMUI software is added to
the device.
Now  it's  time  for  factory  workers
to perform the physical testing of each
phone. One person is in charge of turning
the phone on and making sure the buttons
function properly. Another individual sits in
a soundproof room and tests the audio of
each phone.
In the next step, a production line
employee is in charge of putting on that
plastic screen protector that we are all too
afraid to peel off. The completed phone
is then manually placed in a box that is
prefilled with the charger, headphones
and whatever else a smartphone typically
comes with. Each box slides through to get
secured with plastic and another worker
ensures that each box is up to standard
and  is  placed  in  a  shipping  box. Ten
phones fit in one box before it gets sealed
off and is sent to a facility to be shipped to
buyers. Those phones then get delivered
to the thousands of stores around the
world where each phone will finally find
itself in the hands of a consumer.
Amusingly, by the end of the tour, the
one thing that I really wished I had was the
ability to hire the factory worker in charge
of perfectly putting on a screen protector
whenever I got a new phone.

READING SKILL
Identifying Text Organization
Longer reading passages are often organized into sections, each focusing on
one main idea; these sections may each consist of one paragraph or more. Some
texts label sections with headings; others do not, so it is up to the reader to determine
the sections and ideas. One way to quickly identify sections and main ideas is to read
the first line of each paragraph and skim the rest. Understanding each section’s main
idea can be useful for creating a word web to summarize the reading.
"Humans can develop certain abilities we aren't born with by
practicing animals' movements," the traditional Chinese Wushu lovers
believed in the past — and still do today.
Chinese Five-Animal Exercises, also known as Wuqinxi, are the first
complete set of qigong exercises following the movements of animals:
monkeys, deer, birds, bears and tigers. They were created by one of the
greatest doctors in Chinese history, Hua Tuo, more than 1,800 years ago.
The  Five-Animal  Exercises  are  well-designed  to  help  blood
circulation ( 循环), and let the energy go smoothly in the body so as to
improve the health.
"The  bear  movements  are  good  for  the  stomach. The  tiger
movements can reduce the pain in the back. The deer movements help
reduce the fat around the waist. The bird movements can help keep our
knees healthy and the monkey movements can be good for the heart."
said Hua Yi, the 59th inheritor ( 继承人) of Wuqinxi.
For those new learners, the first few exercises might not go well.
You may find it hard to focus. Wear comfortable clothes, keep peaceful
in your mind, try to move slowly... Little by little, you'll feel more and
more harmonious with nature. You may even feel you become a tiger or
a deer, walking in the forest freely.
These exercises need no tools and they are easy to learn. You
can search online for the videos and practice them at any time when
you feel like relaxing your body and mind. Because it's fun to practice
and good for health, Five-Animal Exercises are becoming more and
more popular in recent years, not only in China, but also in many
other places of the world.
IDENTIFYING Read the following passage, identify sections and main ideas.

People often discuss the problem that the modern "global(全球的)village" needs a
"global" or a "world" language, and that in a world of modern communications, globalized
trade and easy international travel, a global language has never been more important.
With the appearance of large international bodies such as the United Nations, the
pressure to set up a worldwide language has never been greater.

A global language refers to a language that is learned and spoken internationally, and
is featured not only by the number of its native and second language speakers, but also
by its geographical distribution(分布), and its use in international organizations. A global
language acts as a common language that enables people from different backgrounds to
communicate without difficulty.
Historically, the important reason for the form of a global language is that it is spoken
by those who are in power. Latin was the widely used language of its time, although it
was only spoken by a few people within the Roman Empire. Importantly, though, it was
the language of the powerful leaders of the Roman Catholic Church— and this is what
makes it a global language then. Thus language can be said to have no independent
existence of its own, and a certain language only dominates when its speakers dominate
(and it fails when the people who speak it fail).
The influence of any language is mainly influenced by those things: the number of
countries using it as their first language, the number of countries using it as their official
language, and the number of countries teaching it as their foreign language of choice
in schools. But history shows us that a language becomes a global language mainly
because of the political power of its native speakers, and the economic(经济的)power
can help it keep and increase its influence.
( ) 1. Why is "global village" mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To show what the world is like today.
B. To express the need of a global language.
C. To tell how a global language forms.
D. To explain its meaning to us.

You were in the shower washing your hair with shampoo when an excellent idea
came to you. You just solved the problem that you had tried to solve for months. It was
an Aha Moment. You may wonder why your best ideas come to you in the shower. That's
because it's the perfect place for creative thinking.
Why? Because you are relaxed. You do something boring that you do every day.
And you give your brain a rest. This shows that a shower can meet the "3Rs" of creativity:
relaxation, repetition, and rest.

A warm shower is relaxing, allowing your mind to wander. It's in a small and safe
space where you feel comfortable. It is probably the only time you can get away from the
daily pressure of life and be alone during the day. When you relax, your brain releases
dopamine, a feel-good chemical that helps pass information between neurons(神经元).
Research shows that you are more likely to be creative when you are doing
something uninteresting like exercising or showering. We spend 40% of our time on
repetitions, being in the shower is one of those times of the day. You are doing something
repetitive every day: you wash your hair and body.
Researchers say when you rest your brain, parts of your brain connect with
one another.
These connections help you focus on useful information and deal with
imaginative problems better.
The shower is the Perfect Place for the Perfect Idea. Relaxation, repetition, and rest
are important things to make people think more creatively. According to research, the
"3Rs" is why 72% of people get creative ideas in the shower. Why do you get your best
ideas in the shower? It's your creative sweet spot. Creativity often comes when you least
expect it.

4. 范文赏析
Dear Bob,
How's everything going? Knowing you are interested in the current situation of shared
bikes, I'm writing to tell you something about it.
Undoubtedly, the shared bikes can bring lots of benefits. To begin with, riding a bike
is not only economic but also time saving, especially when your destination is not far
away. What's more, it's beneficial for us to make contributions to reducing air pollution.
However, with its rapid development, it brings about many problems. Some shared bikes
are parked everywhere, making the city roads messy and dangerous. What's worse,
some shared bikes have been damaged, stolen or even burnt.
In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. As a civilizational citizen,
it is of great importance for us to use the shared bikes reasonably. It is our duty to call
on everyone to treasure our public resources and make our city more and more beautiful.
Besides, the government should make relevant laws to regulate the market and urge
people to park the bikes in the right places and obey the traffic rules. Do you think so?
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours,

Li Hua

We truly are what we eat — and what
our ancestors ate. Food has changed
who we are and how we developed for
hundreds of thousands of years. From
processing to preserving to cooking, what
humans did and continue to do to food
played a big role in shaping our evolution.
"Processed food isn't just a modern
invention, created in factories from
artificial ingredients. It is as old as humanity
itself and may have helped create our
species," wrote Nicola Temple, author of
Best Before: The Evolution and Future of
Processed Food, for the BBC.
Although processing is viewed
negatively nowadays, it was important to
our development as a species. Processing
doesn't necessarily mean adding chemicals
— it also includes pounding or slicing or
changing the food in any way before eating.
Compared to our ancestors, modern human
teeth, jaws and faces have gotten smaller
relative to overall skull size because of
making food easier to chew, especially from
cooking.
Cooking food was one of the biggest
changes in human history. Researchers
believe it could have occurred between 1.8
million and 400,000 years ago, Harvard
professor Richard Wrangham said,
according to National Geographic. Cooking
increases the energy and nutrients we get
from food.
Without cooking, according to the
BBC, an average person would have to
eat around 5 kilos of raw food to survive
— and we'd have to spend most of the day
chewing.
Also, up to 50 percent of women who
only eat raw foods develop a condition
that signals that the body cannot support
a pregnancy — a major problem from an
evolutionary angle, according to Scientific
American.
Processing food led to a huge gain
in leisure time. The less time people
spent chewing, the more time they had to
develop complex oral language.
Cooking food also breaks down its
cells, so our stomachs need to work less
to absorb the nutrients our bodies require.
This, said Professor Peter Wheeler from
Liverpool John Moores University, UK,
"freed up energy which could then be used
to power a larger brain. The increase in
brain-size mirrors the reduction in the size
of the gut."
Processed food literally shaped us
as a species and made us human — the
only species on Earth who can cook.

READING SKILL
Understanding Pronoun Reference
A pronoun usually, but not always, refers to something earlier in the sentence or in a
previous sentence. In the example below, the subject of the second sentence (they)
refers to a noun in the first sentence (humpback whales).
Herman Melville ... wrote that humpback whales were "the most lighthearted of
all the whales." A favorite of whale watchers everywhere, they swim in ocean areas
close to land and are active at the surface.
The context should help you understand what the pronoun is referring to.
COMPLETION What does each underlined word refer to? Circle a, b, or c.
1. Humpbacks are intelligent animals, and can be seen working together
to hunt schools of small fish. And, if you listen closely, you might even
    hear one singing.
    a. a humpback whale
    b. a group of intelligent animals
    c. a school of small fish
2. Marine biologist Jim Darling has studied the songs of humpback
whales for more than 25 years. While recording whale songs on a boat
near Hawaii, he invited author Douglas Chadwick to experience diving
    with a humpback.
   a. Jim Darling b. Douglas Chadwick c. the author
3. Humpback whale songs can be long and complex, sometimes lasting
for 30 minutes or more. They are perhaps the longest songs sung by
    any animal.
   a. the researchers b. humpback songs
   c. male humpbacks

II. Choose the best answer. (15'x4=60')
By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there
ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it
comes to vegetables, it's not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that
decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body.
Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease,
and eye problems and even cancer. But raw(生的)vegetables are not always best. The
researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw foods were short of lycopene(番茄红
素), the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. "There is an idea that raw
foods are always going to be better, " says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohio State
University. "For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful."
A number of factors(因素)decide how the vegetables do good to people's health
before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before
being bought. Single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if
they are cooked in different ways.
Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was
better for carrots than frying or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.
What was cooked with the vegetables can also be important. When the vegetables
were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste
of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other
things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.

You're watching your favorite TV show when a commercial break starts. First you
see an ad for a candy bar. Then there is one for fast food. If that sounds familiar, you
are not alone. Researchers from McMaster University in Canada studied the effects of
junk food ads. They found that kids made unhealthy food and drink choice as quickly as
30 minutes after seeing the ads. Experts worry that exposure to these ads can have a
negative effect on kids' health.
"There is too much unhealthy food advertising out there," says Behnam Sadeghirad,
one of the researchers who led the study. "This is dangerous for younger children."
Food ads are everywhere, from TV and the Internet to radio and billboards.
Companies want to make sure you know about their products. They spend nearly$1.8
billion a year on food ads aimed at kids, according to a recent report.
It's especially hard to escape from ads on TV. An earlier research found that kids
watched nearly 12 food ads on TV each day. Most of these ads weren't for healthy foods.
In fact, on average, kids saw only one ad per week for fruits and vegetables. Instead,
most of the ads were for fast food, candy and sugars drinks.
Jennifer Harries, a professor at the University of Connecticut who studies food ads
aimed at kids. Says this is a big part of the problem. "Unhealthy foods are not things we
should be encouraging kids to eat more often," Harries says. "But unfortunately those are
the products being advertised to them the most."
The study by McMaster University shows that the overload(过量)of junk food ads is
affecting what foods kids choose to eat. One concern is that seeing these ads could lead
to an increase in cases of childhood overweight. Actually, over one-third of kids and teens
in the US are overweight.
