Wandering Elephant Herd
                     Marches North
A No one knows where they are going
or why. Since March 2020, a family
of wild elephants in southwest China
has traveled hundreds of miles from a
natural reserve, walking north through
fields, highways, villages and towns.
B They have stolen crops, walked around
in villagers' courtyards looking for food,
and broken into a car dealership where
they drank buckets of water and left
muddy footprints.
C "We have no way of telling where they
are going," said Chen Mingyong, a
professor at Yunnan University who
studies wild elephants.
D "It is common for Asian elephants to
migrate, but in the past they mostly
looked for food within their habitats," he
said. "Traveling this far north is quite
rare."
E From local residents to officials, the
country has been amazed at the family
of 15 Asian elephants who haven't care
about police sirens, trucks with food,
and attempts to lure them home to
their natural reserve in Xishuangbanna
near China's border with Laos and
Myanmar.
F On Wednesday, the family reached the
outskirts of Kunming, the provincial
capital of Yunnan, where people feared
deadly accidents between residents
and the wild animals would become
more likely. Traffic controls were put
in place outside a village near the city
of Yuxi, where the elephants were
expected to pass. Crowds gathered
to watch from a distance, according to
local media reports.
G According to Shu Chen, a conservation
project coordinator at the Zoological
Society of London, Asian elephants
traditionally have huge home range,
within which they search for food,
moving according to the season. As
the range has shrunk, the result of
more land being changed into rubber
plantations and other agricultural uses,
the elephants now find themselves
roaming among crops and closer to
humans.

READING SKILL
Understanding Cause-and-Effect Relationships
Understanding cause-and-effect relationships within a text is an important part of
reading comprehension.
A cause is an action that makes something happen. An effect is a result of that action.
Certain connecting words show these relationships. In these examples, the cause is
the heavy rain and the effect is the flood.
The heavy rain caused / resulted in / was the reason for the flood.
There was heavy rain. Therefore, / Consequently, / As a result, there was a flood.
There was heavy rain, so there was a flood.
Because of / As a result of the heavy rain, there was a flood.
Cause
deforestation for agriculture
2. seeking ____________
3. trade in ____________
Effect
1.____________
closer to humans
threat of being killed
A. Circle the causes and underline the effects in this text.
B. Use the information in the reading above to complete the chart.
RECOGNIZING
I.
Asian elephants traditionally have huge home range,
within which they search for food, moving according to
the season. More forests have been changed into rubber
plantations and for other agricultural uses, which results in
their habitat loss. Elephants need to seek space and food.
Consequently, they roam among crops and closer to humans.
Asian elephants do still face another threat. Because of a
growing trade in elephant skin, used for jewelry, more and more
adult elephants are killed. Young wild elephants are also trafficked
for the tourism trade.

teeth. His long trunk lets him get his food easily.
The trunk of an elephant is to him what the neck is to other animals. It is also a nose
to him, for at the end of it there is an empty place like a cup, and in the bottom of the cup
are two holes, and the animal smells and breathes through them. It is an arm and a hand
too, so that it has been said that the elephant carries his nose in his hand, and it might
also have been said that he breathes by his hand.
At the end of the trunk, there is a strange part, about five inches long, which forms
a finger. With this finger the animal can pick up the smallest piece of money from the
ground, and he has been taught to make marks like letters with a pen.
The trunk of a full-grown elephant is about eight feet long. The elephant has such
great strength that he can knock down a man with it.

Finding the Awesomeness
My family hadn't done anything different for long.
So when my aunt invited us to her farm for a spring
celebration last month, I was so excited that I decided
to make some special cupcakes.
On that day, everything went wrong. First we had
to wait for Ted to find his shoes. On the half way, we
had to go back to the house as Mom 1 her
wallet at home. Then, we drove far to find a restroom for Indi. After that, my parents
decided to take a shortcut, which ended up turning into a long cut! We were driving
forever on a winding road when our car started making a strange noise.

"Sorry," said my Mom. "We have to pull over and call roadside service."
"Don't worry," said Dad. "I'm sure 2 will come soon."
Actually, help did not arrive soon at all.
"We're going to 3 everything!" said Ted.
I just sighed (叹气).
"Look on the bright side," said Dad. "Our car couldn't have picked a 4 place
to break down." It was true. There were various wildflowers dancing on the sea of grass,
with strong trees as their guards.
Mom got the picnic blanket out. "How about walking over to that wildflower field and
have our own 5 ?"
At first, we kids weren't exactly jumping up and down about the idea. But as we
looked around, cool things started happening.
"Hey!" Indi said. "This huge butterfly 6 on my knee! She's so beautiful."
"Look!" Mom pointed at two cute rabbits happily eating grass. "We're not the only
ones who think this is a good spot for a 7 ."
Just then, we noticed hundreds of birds rose up out of the trees and flew into the sky
in the most amazing patterns!
"Wow! That's the most magical thing I've ever seen!" said Ted.
Finally, we didn't make it to the farm, and we ate my cupcakes—they were so
delicious!
Sometimes you can get discouraged, but do not give up! Try to stay 8 to
what's happening around you! You might just discover unexpected awesomeness right
under your nose!

Plastic straws (吸管) are "having a hard time" in America. Seattle became the first
large city in the US to ban (禁止) plastic straws.
Starbucks also said they planned to
1 using straws by 2020. And more companies and governments also followed.
Plastic is 2 to the environment.
Some say banning plastic straws is an
important 3 towards saving our planet, but others think plastic-straw bans are
inconvenient (不方便的), unnecessary, and unfair. Let's see what these two Americans said.
Josh Lee from Chicago, Illinois 4 his idea. "Plastic straws may help make
drinking easy, but the long-term 5 are too high. When they are 6 they
pollute our land and sea. Sea animals sometimes mistake the plastic for food. They may
7 because of that. In my opinion, if one likes using straws, he can buy paper or
steel (钢) straws to carry with him."
Maria Suarez from Bellaire, Texas thought 8 . "Many people with disabilities
(缺陷) depend on plastic straws to drink safely. Without plastic straws, people might use
paper straws, 9 making paper products uses a lot of energy. Also, it creates air
and water pollution. And paper can be used only once. Plastic can be reused and recycled.
Finally, it is 10 to think that banning plastic straws will save the sea. Instead, we
should teach people to leave rubbish in the right place so it doesn't end up on beaches or in
waterways."

Glacier ice and cooled lava each cover approximately one-tenth of the
country’s total area. The glaciers are a reminder of Iceland’s location,
which nearly touches the Arctic Circle, the northernmost area of the
earth. The lava is explained by the fact there are many volcanoes in
Iceland. It is estimated that since the year 1500 about one-third of the
Earth’s total lava flow has poured out of these volcanoes.

        Welcome to
                 Iceland
A Iceland is a small island country
in Northern Europe. It is Europe's
westernmost country. It is between the
Greenland Sea and the North Atlantic
Ocean. It is in the northwest of the
United Kingdom, and is slightly smaller
than the state of Kentucky.
B Iceland is home to the world's
northernmost capital, Reykjavik. Only
about 343,000 people live in Iceland in
total. And 64% of the population live
in and around Reykjavik. Reykjavik is
a colorful city, full of restaurants, cafes,
museums, and bars. You can even
swim outdoors in warm geothermal
pools. And because Reykjavik City
is small, it's also easy to get around
on foot.
C Iceland has about 200 volcanoes and
one-third of Earth's total lava flow.
The country has more than 20 active
volcanoes. Grímsvötn and Hekla are
Iceland's most active volcanoes. Over
99% of Iceland's electricity and over
80% of its total energy comes from
hydropower and geothermal power,
making it one of the most eco-friendly
countries in the world.
D One-tenth of the total land area is
covered by cooled lava beds and
glaciers. If global warming continues,
rising water levels and melting ice
could be harmful to Iceland.
E Foxes were the only land mammals
in Iceland when it was settled.
Newcomers brought in reindeer and
other animals. There are four national
parks in Iceland.
F School is free to all Icelanders all the
way through college. Every student
is taught to speak both Danish and
English in school. Handball and soccer
are the two most popular sports for
children, but they also enjoy swimming
and horseback riding.

Organizing Information — A Chart
Much like a concept map, a chart helps you organize information in a visual way. It
can be useful to take notes on the key details of a passage in a chart because it is a
good way to “see” and remember the information you want to compare or contrast.
A. Look back at the reading. What information is important to remember?
Underline the key words about each paragraph.
       B. Complete the chart using information from the reading. Write one
           word in each space.

III. Reading (15' X 4 = 60')
If you found a list of the world's tallest mountains in an atlas (地图册) or almanac (历
书), Mt. Everest (珠穆朗玛峰) in China would head the list. It is more than 29,000 feet
high. Far down the list would be Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, which rises 13,796 feet above
the Pacific Ocean. Yet Mauna Kea is really taller than Mt. Everest.
How is that possible? Mauna Kea is a volcano built up from piles of lava (火山岩浆).
Only about 14,000 feet of the giant volcano sits above the water. Another 16,000 feet
ascends from the bottom of the ocean to sea level. So Mauna Kea is really about 30,000
feet tall.
How big is Mauna Kea? If you spread out all of the lava it took to form the volcano, it
would cover the entire state of New York with a blanket of rocks and ash more than 1,000
feet thick!

But recently in South Africa, the monkeys have become difficult because they get into
people's homes to steal food. And they're not friendly like the monkeys on TV! One day, they
even frightened a ten-year-old boy when he heard strange noises in the kitchen. People
called the police, but they're not allowed to hurt the animals. So many families are selling

"Are you cold? "
This is a question I've heard many times since I came to China. I often wear a light
jacket and a T-shirt during winter, while most other people are wearing heavy coats.
I understand that people are sometimes confused or worried when I wear so little in
winter. But when my Chinese friends refuse to eat or drink cold things, even during the
hot summer, I become the one who is confused. They believe that cold food and drinks
might harm their health. Where does this idea come from?
My friends said their parents taught them that cold food and drinks are bad for their
digestion (消化). One friend even told me that cold drinks, such as ice water, can cause
the fat in our stomach to become solid (固体).
But after doing some research of my own, I wasn't sure whether it was true or not.
According to an article I read on the website, the food that you eat will quickly match your
own temperature. This means that it doesn't matter if you eat something hot or cold. The
temperature of the food or drinks will match your own temperature anyway.
On the other hand, when I get sick, my Chinese friends often tell me to "drink some
hot water and have a good rest". And I have to say, following this advice often does make
me feel better.

综合演练
Introduction to the Theatre
A. When I was at high school I had the most wonderful drawing teacher named Mr
Richards. He was also an actor, and was involved in many of the plays at the local theatre.
He always encouraged us to come along and see him perform. At first we were all a bit
unsure about this idea. After all, teenagers didn't go out to see live actors performing
on stage; instead, they stayed at home doing their homework and watching television or
playing computer games.
B. One day Mr Richards said he had arranged a special bus to take 20 of us to see
the play that he was performing in on Friday night. He seemed so excited about it that
my friends and I decided to go and see what it was like. Mum and Dad thought it was
a strange request, but they agreed to let me go out for the night as long as I was home
before midnight.
C. At the end of the week, Mr Richards told us where to meet the bus. We were all
caught up in his enthusiasm and I was really looking forward to experiencing a completely
different form of entertainment. Mum and Dad hadn't even been out to the theatre before,
so it was very special. Mr Richards had told us to dress up and make the most of the
occasion, so we did. Even the boys wore their best clothes! It was just like going out to
the school ball and we were all full of anticipation about the event. Another teacher went
on the bus with us because Mr Richards was already waiting behind the scenes at the
theatre.
D. When we arrived I realised why he had warned us to dress up in our best clothes.
Everyone in the foyer was wearing really expensive outfits, with the women in gloves,
heavy make-up, jewellery and fur coats! The usher (引座员) showed us to our seats near
the stage and we watched as the curtain opened to an elaborate (精心装饰的) scene. I
couldn't believe it when Mr Richards walked out onto the stage dressed as an old man.
At first I didn't recognise him until my friend nudged me and whispered, 'There he is!'

E. We all leaned forward to catch every word that Mr Richards spoke. It was so
strange to see our teacher dressed up and playing the part of a completely different
person. During the interval (幕间休息), we all had orange juice with some cheese and
crackers and felt very grown up. I think some of the boys sneaked (偷偷尝) a glass of
wine as well! Before long the play was over and everyone in the audience (观众席) was
clapping (鼓掌) as the actors bowed on stage. Mr Richards gave us all a special wave
and next thing we knew he was out in the foyer, asking us what we thought of the play.
Of course, we were all very impressed. And we couldn't wait to see the next one!

Who were the jazz pioneers? Most were blacks. This music was not written down,
and at first only blacks played it. It was hard for white musicians to learn the new style.
But soon they, too, were playing jazz.
The popularity of this music spread. From New Orleans, it traveled up the Mississippi
to Chicago, then to Kansas City and New York. By the 1920s, there were many jazz
musicians, both black and white. Many of them were famous. One man was better than
the rest. His name was Louis Armstrong.
Louis Armstrong was a born musician. He was not only talented but also
hard-working. He also had a good sense of humor and a big, good-natured smile. These
personal qualities were valuable in his rise to fame. After he became famous, he traveled
around the world. It seemed that everyone wanted to hear Louis play. But life was not
always easy, especially at the beginning.
Louis Armstrong was born in 1900 in New Orleans. His father never went to school
and his mother could hardly read. When Louis Armstrong was still a kid, his parents
separated, and Louis lived with his mother. How hard their life was can be imagined. And
yet Louis smiled through everything. He later wrote, "My whole life has been happiness.
Life was there for me and I accepted it. Whatever happened has been beautiful to me. I
love everybody."

A few months ago, my neighbor joined an army of joggers. They were there all the
time: early morning, noon and evening. There were little old ladies in gray sweaters, young
couples in Adidas shoes, and middle-aged men with red faces. "Come on!" My friend Alex
encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. "You'll feel great."
Well, I had nothing against feeling great. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a
good two months of my life, and not a day more. According to my experience and the number
of the people who left our neighbor's jogging army, jogging is the most overvalued form of
exercise around. I'm not alone in my opinion.
First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a real pounding
(重击) while you run down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back
problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack (心脏病
突发) while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn't kill hundreds
of people, but if you have any physical weakness, jogging will surely bring them out, as they
did with me.
Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for
forty-five minutes isn't my idea of fun. Some joggers say, "I love being out there with just my
thoughts." Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my
legs hurt.
And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn't just the first
week; it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isn't
fun. So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly,
so why jog?
I don't jog any more, and I don't think I ever will. I'm walking fast for two miles three
times a week, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I'm getting
exercise, and I'm enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and
I've found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.

Exercise
               to the Beat
A Music helps us exercise — but why
does it have this effect? Experts say
there are two main reasons. The first is
simple: Music distracts us. When we
listen to a song we like, our brain pays
attention to the music. For example,
after we exercise for 20 minutes, our
body might be tired. But we may not
feel this immediately because we are
listening to music. So we exercise a
little longer.
B Music also motivates us. When we hear
dance music, for example, we naturally
start to move to the beat. An upbeat
song also puts us in a good mood, so
we feel happier. This gives us energy
and helps us exercise longer. Music
with a quick and steady beat is good
for exercising. But the music shouldn’t
be too fast, says sports psychologist
Dr. Costas Karageorghis. Generally,
songs in the range of 120–140 beats
per minute (BPM) are the best.
C A new study by cognitive scientist
Tom Fritz suggests this is only part
of the explanation, however. In an
experiment, Fritz put 61 people in small
groups. They all then exercised twice.
One time, each group worked out
while listening to music for six minutes.
Another time, they exercised for six
minutes on special Jymmin machines.
The name Jymmin is a combination
of "jammin" and "gym." Using these
Bruno Mars is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer.
• "Lose Yourself" – Eminem (86 BPM)
• "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" – Kelly
   Clarkson (116 BPM)
• "Idol" – BTS (126 BPM)
• "I Gotta Feeling" – The Black Eyed Peas
  (128 BPM)
• "On the Floor" – Jennifer Lopez featuring
   Pitbull (130 BPM)
• "Locked Out of Heaven" – Bruno Mars
   (144 BPM)
• "Mr. Brightside" – The Killers (148 BPM)

machines, each group made music as
they moved. At the end, 53 of the 61
people said the same thing: They felt
less tired when they exercised on the
Jymmin machines. When we exercise
and make music — especially with
other people — working out seems to
be easier.
D How does Fritz explain this? Maybe
people did better on the Jymmin
machines because they had more
control, he says. People created the
beat. They could make it go faster or
slower. Also, the activity was social.
Each group was making music together
and having fun. Fritz believes that
Jymmin exercise may have other
advantages, too. He wants to find
out if it can help with more serious
conditions. For example, it may even
be a good way to treat depression.
E Beats per minute (BPM) is a term for
measuring the speed of a piece of
music. The higher the BPM, the faster
the song. Here's a short playlist of
popular workout music with the BPM
for each song.
A group of people exercise using Jymmin machines.

Identifying Supporting Details
The main ideas of a text are usually supported by details. These give more
information about the main idea, and can include examples, facts, or reasons.
A. The sentences below (1–3) relate to the passage. Match each
sentence with the type of supporting detail it contains (a, b, or c).

__________ 1. Dr. Tom Fritz works at the Max Planck Institute for
                           Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences.
__________ 2. Jymmin exercise may help even serious conditions
                         such as depression.
__________ 3. Music helps us exercise because it distracts us.
B. Read this paragraph and underline the main idea. Then use
supporting details in the paragraph to answer the questions (1–3).
Generally, songs with 120–140 beats per minute (BPM) are the
best for exercising. This is because most people want to get their heart
rate up to this level during a workout. Songs in this range include Lady
Gaga's "The Edge of Glory" (128 BPM) and "Push It" (130 BPM) by Salt-
N-Pepa. Listening to songs like these can increase your endurance by
up to 15 percent. A slower song like Adele's "Make You Feel My Love" (72
BPM) is more likely to make you want to relax, or even take a nap.
     1. Why are songs in the 120–140 BPM range good for exercising?
         ________________________________________________________
     2. Who sang the song "The Edge of Glory"?
         ________________________________________________________
      3. What is an example of a song that is not suitable for exercising?

bags broke down quickly.

experiment also showed that the plastic bags could be broken down in three months.

Parents of twins (双胞胎) often say their children are a little unusual or a bit special. But
according to 16-year-old twin Gerald Scott, there are ways in which some sets of twins are
quite amazing.
"My twin, Owen, and I have had a very special connection since we were born. When
we were very small, we had our own language. Mum says we used to talk to each other
using our own special language. 1 Even our mother didn't understand us, either!"
"As we've got older, we've started using telepathy (心灵感应) to communicate. Sometimes
we can use our minds instead of speaking. We can send messages to each other even when
we aren't in the same place. It sounds mysterious, but I've always known if Owen was in
trouble. Once he broke his leg, I got this terrible pain in my leg at once."
Although it seems strange, telepathy between twins isn't so unusual. 2 One
experiment involved eight-year-old Richard and his twin, Damien. First, they were put in
separate, sound-proof rooms, and Damien was wired up to a machine that measured his
responses. 3 As soon as he put his arm into the water, Damien's responses went

wild. And it was the same whenever anything scary or surprising happened to Richard —
his brother in the other room reacted, too.
4 Actor Ashley tells us that, even when they are far apart, she knows when
her twin sister, Mary, is going through a difficult time or when she isn't happy.
Don't you think the telepathy between the twins is unbelievable? 5

It's true that you don't have to make a speech like a native English speaker. However,
a good pronunciation (发音) helps leave a good impression. 1
Learn the rules.
2 So, my opinion is to start improving your pronunciation by making yourself
know about the rules well first.
Watch while listening.
Find an article with recording. 3 In this way, you can learn the relationship
between the spelling of a word and the sound, and what words sound like when they're in a
sentence together.
Hearing your own voice can be strange. 4 If there's a letter or word that you
want to improve on, I advise you to record yourself saying it. Then listen to the recordings of
native speakers. Find the differences and improve your way of pronunciation.

Dear Tony,
How is everything going? I'm very happy to tell you something about my school life.
Everybody has unforgettable moments at school. For me, I still remember the day
when my classmate, Tom, taught me how to ride a bike. He is also my best firend. It's his
encouragment that made me more determined to learn the skill which I used to be afraid
of. On the afternoon of that meaningful day, I sat on the bike while Tom was holding
the back seat in order to keep my balance. This gave me the sense of security, so I felt
totally at ease. An hour later, however, I still wasn't able to ride it by myself. Aware that
something was wrong with the process, my friend suddenly let go of the bike while I was
on it. But I didn't realize that until I heard him cheering for me. I was glad that I made it
finally. When asked why he didn't keep holding the bike for me, my friend told me that

although he was glad to do so, I wouldn't manage to learn it eventually without trying it on

entirely on others might not be a good way.

When you're bored, what will you do first? If you're
like many, the answer is quite simple: You reach for
your phone.

pictures seem like a p
break.
If that sounds familiar, a new study has bad news.
Reaching for your phone is likely to leave you feeling
more bored.
The problem isn't taking a break.
The

To figure out the r
between phones and boredom, the research team installed
(安装) an app on the phones of 83 volunteers to find out how often they used their phones.
They also asked these volunteers to keep diaries for three days, recording their level of
boredom every hour.
"Phone breaks were frequent (频繁的): In the 20 minutes following each questionnaire,
the volunteers picked up their phones 52 percent of the time. They spent an average of
around 90 seconds on it each time, " reports the research team. "The more tired we are, the
more l
we are to reach for our phones. While we look to our phones to relieve
(减轻) boredom, screen time seemed to i
feelings of boredom. The volunteers
actually reported higher levels of boredom after having used their smartphones."
The research team pointed out that phone breaks may end up being more tiring than
stimulating. In other words, watching the funny videos is very nice, but it's not w
the
cost to your brain in effort and concentration. In addition, picking up your phone might remind
you that you have a better choice to do something else if you don't have to finish the tasks
immediately. Both your time and effort are easily wasted.
What should we do i
? Taking a walk is good exercise. Calling someone can
make your mood cheerful. Reading a book gives your brain a fresh start. You can do many
things like that. Just remember, don't reach for your phone!
