In recent years a quiet but powerful shift has reshaped household spending in China: people are spending more, and more willingly, on the animals they live with. According to iiMedia Research, an independent third-party market consultancy, China's pet-economy market expanded from 97.8 billion yuan in 2015 to 811.4 billion yuan in 2025 — a more than twelvefold rise in a decade, with year-on-year growth of 15.7 percent.

Behind the headline number lies a deeper change in how families relate to their pets. The 2025 China Pet Industry White Paper reports that urban dogs and cats in the country reached 124 million in 2024, up 2.1 percent from a year earlier, while spending on these animals climbed to 300.2 billion yuan, up 7.5 percent. Dogs remain the most kept companion at 44.75 percent, and cats follow closely at 39.11 percent. The rise has been steady rather than sudden, supported by wider urban prosperity and busier but lonelier daily lives.

What owners buy has changed as well. The old pattern of simply "keeping a pet alive" has given way to "keeping it well." People now pay for premium food, regular health check-ups, insurance, and even smart devices such as AI feeders and GPS collars. Analysts call this the "humanization" of pets, and it has pulled former food and drug companies into the sector; in 2025 a large meat processor led a funding round for a pet-food maker.

At its core, the boom is about companionship. Rising numbers of young singles and small households have turned pets from possessions into family members. Spending on a pet, surveys suggest, brings a kind of happiness that is hard to measure but easy to feel — a calm, wordless presence after a long day of work.

Not everything is rosy, however. Experts warn that humanization can also mean over-marketing and inflated prices, while the sector still lacks clear rules in areas such as pet funeral services, where related businesses already exceed 41,000. As the market matures, buyers are learning to tell genuine care from clever advertising.

Still, the rise of the "it economy" tells a larger story about China's consumer market. When people open their wallets for love rather than need, a new kind of growth takes shape — one measured in the warmth of ordinary homes.

  1. What does iiMedia Research's data show about China's pet economy?A. It shrank slightly in 2025 compared with 2015.B. Its total value was about 300 billion yuan in 2024.C. It grew from 97.8 billion yuan in 2015 to 811.4 billion yuan in 2025.D. It is expected to fall below 1 trillion yuan by 2028.
  2. What can be inferred about the change in how Chinese owners treat their pets?A. Owners now spend on pets' quality of life, not just basic survival.B. Most pets are now kept by large, multi-generation families.C. Pet-food prices have fallen because of heavy competition.D. Young people have largely stopped keeping cats and dogs.
  3. What broader social trend does the "it economy" mainly reflect, according to the passage?A. Chinese families are replacing children with pet animals.B. Rising one-person and small households turn pets into companions, driving emotion-based spending.C. The government now requires families to keep a pet.D. Pet ownership has become a short-lived fashion.
  4. What is the passage mainly about?A. How to start a pet-food company in China.B. Why cats have overtaken dogs in Chinese homes.C. The risks of buying smart pet devices.D. The rapid rise of China's pet economy and what it reveals about consumer life.

首段"expanded from 97.8 billion yuan in 2015 to 811.4 billion yuan in 2025 ... year-on-year growth of 15.7 percent"直接给出艾媒口径的规模与增速,C 两项均吻合。

Q2 答案:A

第三段"keeping a pet alive 让位于 keeping it well"与"premium food / health check-ups / insurance / smart devices"共同推出:消费从"养活"升级到"养好",即重生活质量而非基本生存。

第四段"young singles and small households 把宠物从 possessions 变为 family members"须与末段"open wallets for love rather than need(为爱而非需求消费)"跨段整合,合成"独居/小家庭兴起→宠物成陪伴→情感型消费崛起",原文无原句。

Passage 2

In the early 1950s at Swarthmore College, social psychologist Solomon Asch ran one of the most famous experiments in social psychology. He seated each true participant in a group of seven or eight, where the others were secretly actors. The task looked trivial: match a single standard line on one card to the equal line among three choices on another. The correct match was plain to any normal eye. But on about a dozen of the eighteen rounds, the actors spoke first and gave the same wrong answer in unison. Asch's question was simple yet unsettling: would an ordinary person deny the evidence of his own eyes just to agree with the room?

The findings startled the field. In the core studies, based on 123 male undergraduates and reported between 1951 and 1956, about 37 percent of responses on the critical rounds copied the wrong majority, and nearly three quarters of participants conformed at least once. Yet about a quarter held out the whole time, and two thirds of the judgments stayed independent. In a control condition where the actors simply stayed quiet, the error rate fell below 1 percent. The mistakes, then, were not about blurry lines; they were about the weight of being the only one who disagrees.

Asch's follow-up interviews revealed why. Most people who went along knew perfectly well the group was wrong; they simply did not want to seem difficult or stand out. This fits the "normative" social influence described later by Deutsch and Gerard in 1955 — we agree to win acceptance or avoid rejection. A second force, "informational" influence, appears when the task itself is fuzzy: we assume the crowd sees a truth we missed. Because Asch's lines were crisp, the pressure was chiefly normative — a quiet human wish to belong, not a real doubt about what the eyes reported.

The most encouraging result came from a small change. When Asch placed just one dissenting ally who broke ranks and gave the right answer, conformity on critical rounds collapsed to about 5 percent. One honest voice, it seemed, could hand the others back their confidence. The size of the wrong crowd also mattered, but with a clear ceiling: adding voices raised conformity until there were roughly three, after which extra bodies changed little.

The effect has since been tested across the world. A 1996 meta-analysis by Bond and Smith, covering 133 studies in 17 countries, found somewhat higher conformity in collectivist societies, yet later replications in China, South Korea, and the United States found no dramatic gap. What stays true is the core lesson: even obvious, low-stakes facts can bend under social pressure, and resisting often requires nothing more than one companion willing to say what they see. In that sense, Asch's lines still speak to any classroom, office, or feed where people decide whether to follow or to think.

  1. What is stated about Asch's experiments in the passage?A. They used 123 undergraduates and showed about 37% conformed on critical rounds.B. They proved people tend to trust their own eyes.C. They were conducted on women in the 1970s.D. They found conformity rose endlessly with group size.
  2. What does the passage suggest about why people conformed in Asch's test?A. The lines were too blurry for anyone to judge.B. Participants were paid to give wrong answers.C. They knew the answer was wrong but feared standing out.D. They could not hear the questions clearly.
  3. What does the word "dissenting" most likely mean in the passage?A. Agreeing with everyone else.B. Holding a different opinion and breaking ranks.C. Sleeping during the test.D. Leading the whole group.
  4. What is the author's main purpose in writing this passage?A. To show that groups usually give wrong answers.B. To encourage readers to stay away from other people.C. To describe how to run a psychology laboratory.D. To explain Asch's conformity findings and what they teach about group pressure.

Q5 答案:A

第二段"based on 123 male undergraduates and reported between 1951 and 1956, about 37 percent of responses on the critical rounds copied the wrong majority"直接给出被试人数、年份与关键轮从众率,A 三项均吻合。

第三段"knew perfectly well the group was wrong; they simply did not want to seem difficult or stand out"与"normative influence——win acceptance or avoid rejection"须合并,推出:人们明知答案错,却因不想显得难搞/不合群而从众,原文须两步推导。

第四段"one dissenting ally who broke ranks and gave the right answer ... conformity collapsed to about 5 percent"中,dissenting 与"broke ranks(脱离一致)/ gave the right answer(持不同答案)"并列,目标词已加粗提示定位,义为"持异议的、脱离集体的",B 最贴合。

难度提示:Q6 为★踮脚推理,须回到"normative influence(明知错却怕不合群)"机制;长句如"we assume the crowd sees a truth we missed"需拆主从句。

空 (9) 答案:A

干扰项:B lazy(懒的)/C wrong(错的)/D broken(破碎的)均不能修饰"pace(节奏)"表良好状态。

干扰项:A walked(走)/C crawled(爬)/D jumped(跳)均不能表达"最后超越对手的冲刺"。

干扰项:A drew(拉/画)/B saw(看见)/C left(离开)均不能与"finish line"构成"冲线"。

干扰项:A angry(生气)/B lost(迷失的)/D confused(困惑的)均与"完成挑战的成就感"相反。

空 (13) 答案:A

干扰项:B kicked(踢)/C pushed(推)/D ignored(无视)均为粗鲁或冷淡动作,破坏温情基调。

干扰项:A promised(承诺)/C denied(否认)/D forgot(忘记)代入"___ 完赛不在速度"均不如 realized 贴"领悟"。

干扰项:A small(小的)/B sad(悲伤的)/C false(虚假的)均不能表达"坚持带来的深远正向影响"。

难度提示:15 空覆盖近义辨析(racing/calm、ache/smile、encouraging/angry、proud/lost、lasting/small)、固定搭配(keep going、cross the finish line、patted on the back)、语境推理(completed、quit、dashed、slow、steady、sprinted、realized);无"见搭配即选"的送分题,须回语境与全文"紧张—起步—想退—被激励—坚持—冲线—自豪—领悟"主线判断。
