A Bridge Between Cultures

When Li Wei was twelve years old, she movedfrom a small village in Hunan to a big city in England with her parents. At first, everything felt strange and difficult. She could barely understand what her classmates were saying, and she often sat alone during lunch breaks, feeling lonely and homesick.
However, Li Wei was determinednot to let language become a wall between herself and the world. Every evening after school, she spent at least two hours reading English books and watching English programs. Gradually, her English improved, and she began to make friends. She noticed that many of her British classmates were curious about Chinese culture but knew very little about it.
This observationgave Li Wei an idea. She started a weekly cultural exchange clubat her school, where she taught her classmates simple Chinese calligraphy and introduced them to traditional Chinese festivals. To her surprise, the club quickly became one of the most popular after-school activities, with more than forty students joining in the first term.
Furthermore, Li Wei also organizeda special event called "China Day" at the school hall. She brought traditional Chinese food, showed a short film about her hometown, and even performed a traditional Chinese dance. The event was so successful that the school decided to make ita yearly tradition.
Looking back, Li Wei says, "I thought learning English was just about passing exams. But eventuallyI realized that language is a bridge, not a wall. When you share your culture with others, you don't lose your identity — you enrichit." Her story has inspiredmany young people from different backgrounds to embrace their own cultures while staying open to the world.
