One day a farmer’s donkey fell into an unwanted well. The animal cried for hours as the
farmer tried to find out what to do. Finally, he decided it just was n ’t worth saving because the
animal was too old and the well needed to be covered up anyway .
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They each held a shovel(铁铲) and

Pop-ups are shops, restaurants or art galleries that open for a few days, weeks, or
months, then close again. They are often advertised through Facebook and Twitter, or by
word-of-mouth. Pop-ups can appear in all kinds of places: the street, the park, train
stations, hotel lobbies, department stores, city squares.... They’re popular in the UK,
Australia, Canada and the United States, and many other countries.
There are several types of pop-up shops. The Swedish menswear brand Brothers has
The Suitcase Store. This is a large, old-fashioned suitcase with built-in shelves for
the company’s suits, ties, and shirts. It’s touring most big Swedish cities. In 2008,
Reebok opened a one-month store called FLASH in New York City’s CVZ modern
art gallery; and WIRED magazine opens an electronic shop every winter in New York
City with a big launch party full of famous people.
Pop-up restaurants often use clever marketing tricks(计谋) to attract customers. People
don’t know where The Disappearing Dining Club is until it’s fully-booked. One of
their events was made up of a five-course dinner with welcome cocktails and canapés
for £55. They also had DJs and live music.
The 180 Restaurant and Bar in Paris opens for 180 days from 7th January to 7th
July.
It lies on the top floor of the Pullman Hotel, with fantastic views of the Eiffel
Tower.
One new item is added to the menu on the seventh day of each month. It’s

When Greg Hoffman opened his Christmas present from his mother, he was deeply
impressed with the 18-point contract(合约) he had to sign, which says how he is to use
his new iPhone.
“I just couldn’t understand. Why did mother really have to do this?” he told a
reporter from Good morning America.
Some of the rules made by Janell Hoffman are that she owns the phone and pays
for it and she will always know the password(密码) and the phone should be handed over
each night. Greg should also get ready to receive the calls from his parents at any time if
he wants to keep his new phone.
“If it rings, answer it. Say hello and be polite. Do not ever pay no attention to a
phone call if the screen reads ‘Mom’ or ‘Dad’. Not ever,” Rule 3 says.
Failing to follow the above rules and other rules such as not taking it to school and
turning it off in public will result in the 13-year-old boy losing his new phone.
“You are a good boy and you should get this gift. But with acceptance of this
present come rules. Please read through the following contract. I hope that you understand
it is my job to bring you up a well-rounded, healthy young man who can keep up with
the changes of technology and not be ruled by it. Failing to obey the following list will
result in losing your iPhone,” the contract says.
“I love you and look forward to sharing several million text messages with you in
the days to come,” the contract adds.
The rules are made to teach him to break the bad habits that many teens get into
when using their mobile phones.

contract

56. The purpose of Janell’s signing the contract with her son is to ______.

It seems very natural that if you have two dollars and add two dollars to them, you
have four dollars. But do you know it took man millions of years to be able to think this
way? In fact, one of the most difficult things to teach children is the idea of numbers.
In ancient times, when a man wanted to tell how many animals he owned, he had no
system (体系) of numbers to use. He put a stone or pebble into a bag for each animal.
The more animals, the more stones or pebbles he had. It may explain why the word
“calculate” comes from the Latin word “calculus” which means “stone”.
Later on, man used tally marks to count. People would just scratch(划下) a line or
tally mark for each object they wanted to count, but they had no word to tell the number.
The next step in the development of the number system was probably to use fingers.
Again we have word that goes back to this. The word “digit” comes form the Latin
word “digitus”. It means “finger”! And the fact that we have 10 fingers led to the
general use of 10 in the system of numbers.
The number system we use today was invented by the Hindus in India thousands of
years ago and was brought to Europe during 8th to 11th century by Arab traders. In this
system all numbers are written with the nine digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and zero. It
is a decimal system(十进制), that is, it is built on the base of 10.
57. Man first used ______ for counting.
A. a line or tally mark B. a stone or pebble C. fingers
58. If A and B each scratched three lines for their own objects to be counted, they would
probably have ______ objects in all.
A. three B. six C. nine
59. The two Latin words in the text are ______.
A. calculus and stone B. digitus and finger C. calculus and
digitus
60. ______ invented the number system we use today.
A. The Hindus in India B. Europeans C. Arab traders
61. There are ______ steps in the development of the counting system.
A. two B. four C. five

Dear Amy,
I learn from your letter that you want to know something about Chinese traditional
festival – The Dragon Boat Festival. I’m happy to share what I know about it with you.
[来
源:学*科*网]
The festival has a history of more than 2,000 years. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth
month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. On that day, people watch exciting dragon-
boat races and make delicious zongzi, a kind of special food with sticky rice, meat etc.
wrapped in bamboo leaves. These two are both done in memory of Qu Yuan, a great poet
in history.
In a word, we all love the festival because it’s a good reminder to look back on history
and a wonderful time to get together with family. I hope that you can come to celebrate
it with us in the near future.
Best wishes,
Si Xiang
