Text 1
W: Mr. Watson, what should I do after you leave?
M: You need to prepare lunch for my son and take him to a swimming lesson. Oh, don’t forget to
remind him to take his medicine on time.
Text 2
M: Hey, Ruby. What’s the matter with your laptop? Does it fail to connect to the Internet again?
W: It’s even worse this time! It always switches itself off even though it’s fully charged.
Text 3
M: Excuse me, ma’am. How much is this backpack?
W: It’s $40. We offer a 10% discount on all the goods today. And customers with student ID cards
can get a 15% discount.
M: Perfect! Here is my student ID card.
Text 4
M: Do you know Five Little Monkeys, Julia?
W: It’s an interesting children’s story, right?
M: No, it’s a song. My mom usually sings it to me at bedtime. I’ll sing it to you.
W: I’m all ears.
Text 5
M: Sophia, what kind of birthday present do you think is meaningful? Shirley suggested I hold a
party. But I’m considering something more special.
W: How about a chance to travel? Anyway, who are you preparing a gift for?
M: Maggie. She will turn 18 next Wednesday, on May 20th.Text 6
M: Tonight is a party night! Besides cola, we can prepare something else to drink, such as lemon
juice. After all, not everyone likes cola.
W: I don’t think lemonade is a good choice. I think almost every young person drinks cola
regularly.
M: No. My sister seldom does that.
W: Why? Does she dislike the taste?
M: No. You know girls want to keep slim. She thinks there is too much sugar in cola. And I think
drinking too much cola is bad for our teeth.
W: All right. Shall we decide on orange juice then?
M: OK.
Text 7
W: I’m going to miss this house. My bedroom has a great view. And I can often see other kids
play happily in that park through the window of this room. Besides, I really like the bakery in this
neighborhood.
M: I know your feelings, Cindy. But we have to leave.
W: I don’t want to leave. I have many good friends here.
M: We have a lot of happy memories here, but you should be excited to make new ones. Anyway,
have you packed up your things?
W: No. I still have some toys left. I can’t find a big box to put them in.
M: Well, you can’t take all of your toys. Your new bedroom is too small to store all of them.
W: But I can’t just throw the rest away. Maybe I can sell them.
M: I think you should donate them.
W: That’s a good idea.
Text 8
M: Good morning, I’m Gary Patel. I’m here for an interview.
W: Oh, you arrived early. Your interview starts at 11:00 a. m. There is still half an hour left.
M: Yeah, I was afraid I would be late because of traffic jams.W: Well, now that you’re here, let’s get started. Please take a seat. I’m Amelia, the manager of the
human resources department. I’ll be your interviewer today. You want to apply for the position of
salesperson, right?
M: Yes. Here is my resume.
W: Great. Now, tell me something about your work experiences please.
M: Okay. I am... a bank clerk. I mean... I was...
W: Take it easy. Don’t be nervous. Would you like to have a cup of water?
M: Yes, please. Thank you.
Text 9
W: Hey, Kevin. What a surprise to meet you here at this hour! Shouldn’t you be at home right
now?
M: Hi, Lucy. Actually, I don’t go home until my family is asleep these days. I can’t face them.
W: What’s wrong? Did you argue with your wife? Or are the children too noisy?
M: Neither. I’ve been out of work for a week. But I don’t have the courage to tell my family the
truth.
W: I see. So are you looking for a job these days?
M: Yes. I interviewed with several companies, but they all refused me. It seems that I’m the worst
person in the world.
W: Come on, Kevin. You shouldn’t give up on yourself. Do you remember Johnny Brown?
M: The man you met on your trip to Greece last month, right?
W: Yes. He works as a sales manager in a big company. I happen to know that he needs a new
assistant.
M: Really? Could you please call him and ask about it?
W: Of course. But it is too late now. I’ll ring him up tomorrow.
M: You really do me a big favor!
Text 10
M: Research shows cats’ reputation as a cold pet is untrue. Because of their evolutionary
ancestry, domestic cats are, by their nature, more independent than dogs. While they may not rely
upon people to feel safe as dogs do, many cats show love towards their owners. Cats behavetowards humans in the same way that they respond to other cats, so the secret of whether your cats
feel bonded to you lies in their behavior.
One of the most obvious signs that your cats are fond of you is the way that they greet you. A
tail held in the upright flagpole position shows a friendly intention, indicating familiarity and trust.
Cats sometimes twist their tails together as a sign of friendship. They usually wrap their tails
around people’s legs to show affection.
Rolling over and exposing their stomachs is another gesture that a cat has the greatest trust in
you. This is not usually a request for a belly rub. Attempts to stroke a cat’s belly will often result
in an escape.
Your cats might also secretly show their love in the way they look at you. When cats
encounter strange humans or other cats they don’t know, they usually greet them with a stare. But
they are likely to slowly blink at cats they have a good relationship with.
