WellsTraditions
Traditions are a part of life at Wells College. They connect us with each other, providing a
sense of timelessness and continuity. The experiences and memories that make up these
traditions make us all a part of a special community and they’re really fun! Some of the most
long-standingtraditionsincludethefollowings:
●Movingupday
Each spring the senior class promotes students to the next class year. This all-student
occasion is organized by the senior class. This tradition has recently been split in two with a
Senior Roast happening on the Thursday before the last day of classes. At this event, seniors
sing songs and tell jokes. On the last day of classes, seniors gather students around the
Sycamorewherejuniorsaregivencollegepins(徽章)andseniorsaregivenroses.
●Convocation
Opening Convocation celebrates the beginning of the academic year and the formal
introduction of the new incoming class.Atraditional part of this convocation is the candlelight
ceremony. Symbolized by a candle flame, the spirit of the Wells connection is passed from
alumni (校友) to students, signifying what Wells students give to one another throughout their
lives.
高三英语 第3页 (共 11 页)●Teatime
Tea and coffee are served every Wednesday afternoon. Though the long dresses and china
cups are gone, this break from afternoon classes is still a great time to get together with friends
andprofessors.
●Minerva
Outside of Main, the College’s first building, sits the lovely statue of the Roman goddess
Minerva, symbolizing wisdom and invention. The senior class decorates Minerva at the
beginning of the school year, and Minerva remains decorated throughout the year. During the
morningofthelastdayofclasses,aftersingingaroundtheSycamore tree,theseniorclasstakes
turns kissing the feet of Minerva, believing she will bring success and prosperity to all

The road, straight and smooth, leads towards civilization. All around us, the flat
nothingness is interrupted only by electricity pylons (输电线塔), stretching into the distance
like children holding jump ropes. We pass ghost-town service stations with empty convenience
stores stocked with drinks, noodles, and vacuum-packed chicken feet. Then Dunhuang comes
intoview.
One site that traders would have almost certainly visited is the Mogao Caves. These 492
caves were hand-carved into a cliff face because a Buddhist monk named Le Zun had a vision
of 1,000 Buddhas bathed in golden light at the site in 366 C.E. The interior walls were painted
withbreathtakingmurals and the niches (壁龛) filledwithstatues of Buddha. Merchantswould
pass by to pray for protection from the warring nomads (游牧民族) and murderous thieves on
the path. However, as the Silk Road trade was abandoned in favor of sea routes in the 14th
century,Dunhuangwas swallowedbythesands oftime andknowledge ofthe caves fadedfrom

Today, the widespread use of English as a language of science, technology, business,
diplomacy, and entertainment has given many people a strong motivation to acquire the
language. Millions of people are learning English. They, too, are making their own mark on its
development.
Speakers of world varieties of English are remaking its vocabulary to better express their
identities, cultures, and everyday realities. In the Philippines, many houses have a dirty kitchen.
This is not actually a kitchen that is dirty in the sense you think, but one outside the house
where most of the real cooking is done.Adirtykitchen is a necessaryconvenience in a tropical
country where it is best to avoid trapping heat and smells indoors. In Nigeria, a mama put is a
street food stall. The term comes from the way its customers usually order food: They say
“Mama,put...”tothewomanrunningthestallandpointtothedishtheywant.
In Oxford University Press’s Gift of Words campaign, we asked people who speak more
thanonelanguage to“gift” a wordfrom theirfirsttotheirsecondlanguage, andvice versa.The
高三英语 第5页 (共 11 页)responses we received highlight even more words that multilingual English speakers felt they
hadtoborrowfromtheirotherlanguagesforlackofadirectequivalentinEnglish.
Calling these borrowed words “gifts” is an important shift in perspective. Many value
language purityover diversity andconsider externalinfluencesas a threatto the integrity(完整
性) of a language. However, this is in contradiction to how language works. The borrowing of
words is part of the natural evolution of all living languages. English is particularly notable for
its ability to absorb elements from other languages. A host of words were borrowed from Old
Norse,NormanFrench,Latin,andAncientGreekmuchearlierinitshistory,includingcoreones
suchasegg,fashion,universe,andeconomy.
Contrary to popular belief, it is multilingualism rather than monolingualism that is the
norm. Various reports estimate that between 60% and 75% of the global population can speak
morethanone language. Insuchamultilingual, digitallyinterconnectedworld, where more and
more people are brought together by shared interests and goals rather than just geographic
proximity,theinterchangeofwordsbetweenlanguagesandcultureshasspedup.
Changingourattitudes towards multilingualism and language variation is vital to fighting
the linguistic prejudice that causes discrimination for not using the “right” words or for
speakinginthe“wrong”accent.ItisonlywhenweshareownershipofEnglishandembracethe

Astudy published on June 28, 2024, found that consuming coffee might act like a placebo
(安慰剂),makingdrinkersfeelreadytotackletheday.
高三英语 第6页 (共 11 页)Most coffee drinkers believe their morning cup makes them more alert due to its caffeine.
This study aimed to determine if this wakefulness is due to caffeine or the experience of
drinkingcoffee.
“There is a common expectation that coffee increases alertness and psychomotor (精神运

openpathwaysforexploringfactorsthatmayregulateitanditspotentialbenefits.”
The study recruited (招募) participants who drank at least one cup of coffee per day.
Participants avoided caffeinated drinks for at least three hours before the study. They were
interviewedandunderwenttwofunctionalMRI(fMRI)scans:onebeforeconsumingcaffeineor
coffee and the other 30 minutes after. During the fMRI scans, participants were asked to relax
andlettheirmindswander.
Results showed that connectivity in the default (默认) mode network decreased after
drinkingcoffeeortakingcaffeine,indicatingthatbothsubstancesmadepeoplemorepreparedto
transition from rest to daily tasks. However, coffee increased connectivity in the higher visual
network and the right executive control network, involved in working memory, cognitive
control and goal-directed behavior. This increase did not occur with caffeine alone, suggesting

Suddenly, there was some noise not far away. Emily looked in that direction and saw a
crowd gathering, looking panicked. She ran over to see what had happened. There was an old
woman lying on the ground, her face pale as a sheet and her lips slightly purple and quivering

should we do? Who can help?” Everyone around looked troubled. Some were calling an
ambulance on their phones, but no one knew how to help the old woman before the ambulance
arrived.

The main goal of the event was to promote physical fitness and strengthen bonds among students in a fun and

Taking a deep breath, Emily stepped forward. She knelt down on the ground beside the old woman and
checked her condition. Then, she crossed her palms, straightened her arms and started doing CPR. Counting in her
mind, she pressed the old woman’s chest with the required rhythm and force. After every 30 chest compressions,
she performed two rescue breaths. Anxiety hung in the air, and the hearts of everyone watching were in their
throats. Emily was soaked in sweat and her arms and legs felt incredibly sore. However, she kept going.
Finally, the medical staff arrived. Emily explained to them the old woman’s condition and the measures she
had taken. They checked the old woman's condition and said she was out of danger. After the woman was lifted
into the ambulance, thunderous applause erupted among the crowd, with many people nodding and smiling at
Emily. Emily smiled back, feeling happy that she had saved a life. That evening, a video of her heroic act went
viral on social media, with countless people leaving comments praising Emily's behavior. For Emily, she felt she
had only done what was right, and planned to teach those around her the important skill of CPR.听力原文

W: How long would you like to rent it?
M: Three days, from next Tuesday to next Thursday.
W: OK, what type of car would you like?
M: Um, just the smallest type.
W: So, that’ll be a Toyota. It’s $45 per day. (11) So for three days, it’ll be $135 in total, and that includes
third-party insurance and water damage. (11) But you need to pay for the gas yourself. So, would you like to
rent it?
M: Yes, please.
W: Now, what type of driver’s license do you have?
M: An international one.
W: OK. And your name and age?
M: My name is Ronald Schiller, R-O-N-A-L-D, S-C-H-I-L-L-E-R. I’m 33.
W: OK. What time would you like to pick up the car? (12)
M: Well, can we say around noon? Is that OK?
W: Our usual pickup time is 7:30 in the morning. (12)
M: Oh, that’s OK. (12)
W: And we need your credit card to guarantee the booking.
M: My VISA card number is…

W: I read something very strange online today. (14)
M: What was that?
W: Some scientists believe that the universe may be a giant brain. (15) (16)
M: What? That’s crazy. Why do they think so?
W: Because its structure is very similar to that of a human brain.
M: So that would mean the Earth is just a cell inside a giant brain.
W: Exactly. It’s a strange thought, isn’t it? (16)
M: Yes, it is. (16) And, if the universe is a brain…it must be able to think.
W: Yes, but the scientists say it might only think very slowly because the parts of it are so far apart.
M: In a way, I suppose it makes sense. Everything in nature is connected. The people on the Earth are all part of one
natural structure.
W: Yes, so why wouldn’t the Earth be part of an even bigger structure?
M: You know, this is a bit like something I used to think to myself when I was a kid.
W: What did you think?
M: When I learned about cells at school, I imagined that the Earth was just one cell in a giant tree — so big that we
couldn’t even imagine it.
W: You never mentioned that when we were friends as children. (17)
M: Maybe I didn’t think it was the kind of thought that children shared with their friends.

London is famous for its many beautiful old buildings but, in recent years, several modern buildings have been
competing for visitors’ attention. One of them is the 37-floor skyscraper(摩天大楼) on 20 Fenchurch Street, whichhas been called the “Walkie Talkie” because of its shape. (18) In 2013, the “Walkie Talkie” had an effect on its
neighborhood in an unusual way. Sunlight reflected from the windows of the building’s top floors melted cars on the
street below. At the peak of its shine, the rays of the sun shone 15 times as much solar radiation as would usually be
found on the ground — enough to seriously hurt any humans passing by. A solution was quickly found by shading
the building’s windows. Strangely, though, this was not the first time the architect, Rafael Viñoly, had set a town on
fire. The Vdara Hotel in Las Vegas had, only a few years earlier, reflected rays which were so powerful that
they burned the hair of guests at the swimming pool below. (19) Many other buildings across the globe have
caused similar problems. Computer-assisted models have since presented just how dangerous these rays can
be, causing scientists to warn about dangerous reflection from our modern structures. Architects are being
asked to design buildings that take such problems into account. (20)
