For some folks, hiking is an activity done for a couple of miles at a time. But for others, it is a lifestyle. Those
who hike the Pacific Crest Trail(PCT) fall into the latter. The PCT is 2,650 miles. Along the way, hikers walk
through the desert, up mountains and then cross seven national parks. It is a tough journey with a low completion
rate. Just 14% of all hikers attempting a “thru-hike” have succeeded in finishing the PCT.
The hike’s reputation is what makes Pa’at’s completion of the journey more extraordinary. The hiker known
as Pa’at, an old man, finished the last bit of the PCT with two younger hikers, Auti and Chris. They celebrated Pa’
at’s success via an online post. They wrote, “Not many people can say they’ve finished such an amazing feat,
especially not at 71!”
Pa’at approached the trail-end marker and touched it, amazed that he had made it to the end. He said, “I know
there were different troubles that I needed to overcome, but I had confidence in myself before I set off.” And then
he sang, “I’ve been waiting... such a long time. Walking such a long way. Such a long way... just to be here.”
For anyone who has ever dreamed of hiking the PCT, Pa’at’s feat is proof that they aren’t too late. “I’ve
wanted to walk this trail for a long time,” someone posted online, “but now I know even if I don’t get it in my
twenties or thirties, I can still try again. Of course, I can challenge what I lacked courage to do in the past.”
Auti and Chris met Pa’at a few days before finishing. They said, “Pa’at is one of those people you instantly
feel like you’ve known a lifetime. He has a heart of gold, the kindest soul, and unmatched optimism and courage.
We both thank him for being such an inspiration to us.”
4. How does the author begin the text?
A. By quoting a saying. B. By giving an example.
C. By making an assumption. D. By drawing a comparison.
5. Which word can best describe Pa’at’s finishing the PCT?
第 4页/共 11页A. Expected. B. Effortless. C. Troublesome. D. Unbelievable.
6. What can we conclude from paragraph 4?
A. History is a guide. B. Age is just a number.
C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Time is a thief that never leaves empty-handed.
7. What kind of role is Pa’at in the eyes of Auti and Chris?
A. A beginner. B. A stranger. C. An example. D. An opponent.

With the global population increasing, the demand for meat is putting pressure on the environment. To tackle
this issue, artificial meat, also known as cultured meat, is emerging as a sustainable alternative. In recent years,
Chinese scientists have made significant progress in this field, combining cutting-edge biotechnology with
traditional food science.
At the core of artificial meat production is cellular agriculture a process that grows animal cells in a
controlled environment. In one groundbreaking experiment conducted by researchers at Nanjing Agricultural
University, muscle stem cells were extracted from a pig. These cells were then placed in a nutrient-rich solution (溶
液) designed to mimic the environment inside an animal’s body, matching the conditions needed for the cells to
grow. Over several weeks, the cells multiplied and formed muscle fibers, resulting in a small piece of lab-grown
meat.
The research team faced several challenges during the process. For example, they had to adjust the nutrient
solution to ensure the cells grew efficiently. Additionally, they experimented with different bioreactor designs to
create the right texture and taste for the meat. After months of trial and error, the team successfully produced a
piece of pork that closely resembled traditional meat in both flavor and appearance.
To test its quality, the artificial meat was cooked and tasted by a group of volunteers. The results were
promising: most participants could not distinguish it from conventional meat. This breakthrough could reduce
greenhouse gas emissions and land use associated with traditional meat production.
However, artificial meat still has hurdles to overcome, such as high production costs and public acceptance.
Despite these challenges, China’s achievements in artificial meat technology are paving the way for a more
sustainable future.
8. What is the main purpose of producing artificial meat?
A. To provide a cheaper alternative.
B. To develop meat with better taste.
第 5页/共 11页C. To address environmental problems.
D. To promote biotechnology innovations.
9. What challenge did the researchers face during the process?
A. Testing meat quality. B. Harvesting animal cells.
C. Achieving proper meat features. D. Measuring cell growth efficiency.
10. What can be inferred about the future of artificial meat?
A. It will take the place of traditional meat.
B. It may take time to gain widespread approval.
C. China will lead the global market in this field.
D. High production costs will no longer be an issue.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Future of Meat Production
B. China’s Advance in Cultured Meat
C. Green Benefits of Lab-Grown Meat
D. Challenges Posed by Artificial Meat

Environmental DNA (eDNA) has become a crucial tool in ecological research over recent years. By analyzing
water, soil, or other environmental materials for DNA pieces, researchers can tell that thousands of different species
have been in an area without having to observe the actual species passing through.
To date, this eDNA process has mostly been employed to detect marine (海洋的) creatures, insects, and other
wildlife. However, according to a paper published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, this technique could just as
easily be applied to spot humans.
An international team of researchers based at the University of Florida, USA, demonstrated that human
genomic (基因组的) information can be easily detected in eDNA samples collected from water, sand, and even the
air. While this capability could have practical applications, such as aiding in the search for missing persons or
monitoring public health, the researchers highlight significant moral concerns. These concerns include the lack of
agreement from individuals for their DNA to be collected, potential breaches (侵犯) of privacy, and the risk of
genetic information being used for commercial purposes.
This issue is particularly challenging for the field of eDNA, which relies on open and easily accessible data.
“It is standard practice in science to make these data publicly available. However, this also means that if human
第 6页/共 11页information is not screened out, anyone could access this information,” says senior author Professor David Duffy, a
wildlife disease genomics researcher at the University of Florida. “This raises issues around permission. Do we
need to ask permission to collect these samples? Should we bring in some controls to remove human genetic data?”
“Whenever we make a technological advancement, there are both beneficial and concerning potential uses.
This situation is no different,” Duffy explains. “We are raising these issues early so that policymakers and society
have adequate time to develop suitable guidelines.”
12. What is the primary use of eDNA in ecological research?
A. Identifying species present in an area. B. Monitoring species evolution processes.
C. Improving living conditions for wildlife. D. Sampling insects directly in their habitats.
13. Why is the accessibility of eDNA data a potential problem?
A. It ignores practical applications of eDNA data.
B. It may lead to unchecked genetic engineering.
C. It could result in misuse of human genetic data.
D. It raises concerns about wildlife disease research.
14. What does Duffy suggest people concerned do?
A. To develop potential applications. B. To sample genetic information.
C. To highlight advanced technology. D. To establish appropriate regulations.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. eDNA: A New Frontier in Ecological Monitoring
B. eDNA: Human Detection Meets Privacy Challenges
C. eDNA: A Breakthrough in Marine Research Techniques
D. eDNA: Transforming Our Comprehension of Biodiversity

Steven and I are best friends. We were in the same class and had the same assignments to complete. However,
we had very different approaches when it came to our schoolwork.
Steven was very hard-working, and had a strong commitment. He would spend his evenings and weekends
completing his assignments, reviewing his notes, and preparing for tests. He also spent time playing with his
friends, his brother and his sister.
I, myself, on the other hand, was always looking for ways to have fun. I was only interested in playing video
games, hanging out with friends and enjoying my free time. I rarely spent any time studying, doing homework, or
第 10页/共 11页even getting enough rest.
One day, our teacher, Marie, announced that we would have a final project due. And it was essential to
complete on time to attend the last trip of the year. Steven, being the industrious student he was, completed the
project early, and ensured that his work was of high quality. Steven had so much time left before the due date that
he decided to help me. Steven knew that even though I was really smart and had the ability to succeed, I still might
need some help getting started. So every day, Steven encouraged me to begin. But I always had an excuse.
When I finally started, I realized there was a lot of work more than I could possibly complete in one night. I
called Steven for help, but he was already asleep.
Marie told me it was okay to turn in the project late. I smiled with relief and thanked her. However, I soon
realized that my excuse did not solve the problem at all. Not only did Marie explain that I couldn’t go on the trip
because the project was late, but I also had to attend summer school to make up all the work I missed that year.
Steven was just as disappointed as me. He thought about not going on a trip because I wouldn’t be there. But
after talking about it, we both decided he should go and I should stay.
