I’d done it before, and so I had no reason to believe that this time would be any different. I
was sure that when I returned home from my mission trip. As always, I’d bring back nothing more
than some mud on my boots. A hole or two in my jeans and, of course, a lot of great memories.
,
The summer before my high school graduation I went to West Virginia with others as
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂volunteers to repair the homes of those in need. Arriving at our destination, my group was
assigned the task of rebuilding sections of a home that had been damaged by fire. No sooner had
we parked on the home’s dirt driveway than we saw an excited little girl, no more than six years
old, standing in the doorway of the family’s temporary home. Shoeless and wearing dirty clothes
and the biggest smile I’d ever seen, she yelled, “Ma, Ma, they really came!” I didn’t know it then,
but her name was Dakota, and four more days would pass before she’d say another word near me.
Behind Dakota was a woman in a wheelchair — her grandmother, we’d soon learn. I also
discovered that my job that week would be to help change a fire-damaged dining room into a
bedroom for this little girl. Over the following days, I noticed Dakota peeking at us every now and
then as we worked. A few times, I tried talking with her, but she remained shy and distant, always
flying around us like a tiny butterfly but keeping to herself.
By our fifth and final day, however, this was about to change. Before I went to work on her
home on that last morning, I spoke for a moment or two with the grandmother. I was especially
pleased when she told me how much Dakota loved her new room — so much. As we talked, I
noticed something I hadn’t seen before — Dakota was hiding behind her grandmother.
Cautiously, she stepped into view, and I could see that just like her clothes, her face was still
dirty. But no amount of soil could hide those bright blue eyes and the big smile. She was simply
adorable. Slowly, she began walking toward me. It wasn’t until she was just inches away that I
noticed the folded piece of paper in her tiny hand. Silently, she reached up and handed it to me.
Once unfolded, I looked at the drawing she’d made with her broken crayons on the back of an old
coloring book cover. It was of two girls — one much taller than the other — and they were
holding hands. She told me it was supposed to be me and her, and on the bottom of the paper were
three little words that instantly broke my heart. Now almost in tears, I couldn’t control myself
anymore — I bent down and hugged her. She hugged me, too. And for the longest time, neither of
us could let go.
I left for home early the next morning. I was returning with muddy boots and holes in my
jeans. But because of Dakota, I brought back something else, too — a greater appreciation for all
or the blessings of my life. I’ll never forget that barefoot little butterfly with the big smile and
dirty face. I pray that she’ll never forget me either.

The idea of billions of people going through a few masks a week during this pandemic
definitely rings alarm bells, but a team of researchers in Melbourne may have the solution.
They’ve discovered that adding millions of discarded face masks to road-paving (铺路)
mixtures would actually lower the cost of the road, while preventing billions of them from
landfills. Just one kilometer of road would need three million masks, and the polypropylene (聚丙
烯) plastic used to make single-use surgical face masks also increased the flexibility and durability
of the road.
The new material is a mixture of about 2% torn masks, with recycled concrete aggregate
(RCA)—a material obtained from waste concrete and other minerals from destroyed buildings.
This recycled material was found in the study to be ideal for two of the four layers generally
required to create roadways. Paving a kilometer of two-way road with the RCA and three million
face masks would result in a change of 93 tons of waste from landfills.
The final product then is more resistant to wear than asphalt (沥青), as well as being cheaper
too, provided there was a method for collecting masks. The research team did a cost-analysis and
found that, at $26 per ton, the RCA was about half the cost of mining raw materials, and as much
as a third of the cost of shipping the used masks to a landfill.
The widespread application would be ideal for large infrastructure (基础设施) projects. For
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂example, Washington has the 11th worst roads in terms of unaddressed repairs in the U.S. If the
damaged roads in Washington state were repaired with the RCA/mask mixture, it would reuse
nearly 10 billion masks, sparing American landfills hundreds of millions of tons of trash.
It’s said that the team is looking for private industry partners or governments willing to give
their plastic mask road an opportunity for a large-scale test.
28. What does the underlined word “discarded” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Recycled. B. Produced.
C. Mixed. D. Abandoned.
29. What is the new material used to pave ways made of?
A. 2% torn masks, concrete and tons of trash.
B. Polypropylene plastic and building materials.
C. Single-use surgical masks and recycled concrete aggregate.
D. Waste concrete and other minerals from destroyed buildings.
30. Why are numbers mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To tell us what the team has found.
B. To prove this material is cost-effective in paving roads.
C. To explain repairing roads costs a lot of materials.
D. To praise the hard work the team has done.
31. What can we learn from the text?
A. The material used to pave roads is made of masks.
B. Generally speaking, it requires two layers to create roadways.
C. It remains to be tested whether the solution is practical.
D. The damaged roads in Washington were repaired with the RCA.

Researchers at the Dog Studies lab at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human
History have shown that dogs may possess some metacognitive (元认知) abilities. Specifically,
when they do not have enough information to solve a problem, they will actively look for more
information, similarly to primates (灵长类).
In a recent study, project leader Julia Belger explored whether dogs have metacognitive
abilities. To test this, the researchers designed a device involving two V-shaped fences. A reward,
either food or a toy, would be placed by one researcher behind one of the two fences while another
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂researcher held the dogs. In some cases, the dogs could see where the reward was placed, while in
others, the dogs could not. The researchers then analyzed how frequently the dogs looked through
the gap in the fence before choosing an option.
The researchers found that the dogs did check significantly more often for the reward when
they had not seen where it was placed. These results show that dogs do tend to actively seek extra
information when they have not seen where the reward is concealed.
The results did not allow the researchers to say definitively whether dogs possess meta-
cognition, though they displayed some evidence for it. Julia said, “For humans, vision is an
important information gathering sense. In this case, our experiment was based on a checking
action relying on sight, but the dogs probably also used their sense of smell when checking
through the gap. We know that smell is very important to dogs and we could see that they were
using it.”
Julia added, “In future, we would like to develop an experiment to investigate under what
circumstances dogs decide to use their sense of smell versus sight. This may give us additional
insights into their information seeking abilities.”
32. What ability may dogs have according to the study?
A. To offer information like primates. B. To use their skills to find more food.
C. To seek information to solve a problem. D. To ask for help before choosing an
option.
33. What does the underlined word “concealed” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Decorated. B. Hidden. C. Produced. D.
Purchased.
34. What attitude did the researchers have to the finding?
A. Uncertain. B. Friendly. C. Negative. D. Critical.
35. In which section of a newspaper can you probably read the text?
A. Environment and technology. B. Humans and nature.
C. Literature and culture. D. Society and life.

In my thirty-year teaching profession one of the best teachers I have ever known is Mr
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂Rowe. I was lucky enough to teach fourth grade together with him.
Mr. Rowe had endless patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him.
He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I
had ever seen. Steven couldn’t stand school. He didn’t like being picked last for kickball. He
didn’t like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he
didn’t like himself.
The first day he walked into Mr. Rowe’s classroom, he ignored the other students, looking
angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.
Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder, but Steven pulled away.
Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him:“Hi, Steven. I’m happy you are in my class. We are gonna
have a great year.” Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher
in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom. So, while Mr. Rowe seemed
cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch (投球) the kickball during the break.
“Hey, Steven,” Mr. Rowe commented, “You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret
trick.” Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven
learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!
After the kickball, Steven sat as close to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question
was asked, Steven lit up; when he knew the answer, he raised his hand; when he answered the
question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe, his days of
the fourth grade promised wonderful. It was obvious that Steven grew to love Mr. Rowe more and
more with each passing day.
