I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year’s use. It was still in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters’ wear. I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift. I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat every day. Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that there was someone who couldn’t afford a coat but could get my old one. My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a while. I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover.” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have. 24.Which word can best describe the author’s daughter? A.Wealthy. B.Thoughtful. C.Easy-going. D.Humorous. 25.Why was the author in shame when seeing his old coat in the closet? A.It cost too much. B.It was looking dirty. C.There was not enough room for his new coat. D.It was not sent to someone in need. 26.What is the author’s decision after his second coat becomes old? A.Telling his daughter. B.Buying a new one soon. C.Donating it to charity. D.Sending something else to charity. 27.What does the author want to show in the last paragraph? A.Giving fills our wants. B.Love is the key to joy. C.The more you give, the more you lose. D.A coat is large enough to cover our wants. C 学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司In Wiltshire, England, volunteers are being searched for to visit a nature protection area to count the butterflies living there and in nearby fields. The project is started by an environmental protection organization, which has been devoted to improving the living environment for wild animals. Recently, the organization has called on volunteers to help it observe environmental changes based on the record of butterflies and protect the environment. In the area, the local people have planted many special flowers with the help of the organization. They want to see whether these flowers will interest the rare, and beautiful butterflies. The project officer Sarah Marshall says, “It will be a suitable living place for butterflies. They are great ‘indicator species’ (指向性物种) as they are easily affected by climate changes. So they make a brilliant early-warning system for the environment.” She also points out that volunteers are needed to record the number or species of butterflies, and based on the change happening to the butterflies, the hidden environmental problems in the area can be found out in time. The organization is searching for volunteers to help monitor ( 监测) butterflies from April through to September. They will walk the same route and record the different butterflies they meet along the way. Each visit should take no more than two hours, and each volunteer is expected to visit once a month count the wildlife. “Staff will provide backup (后备人员), so if the weather is poor on the day you are visit (butterflies don’t like to fly in the rain, wind or if it’s too cloudy), we can have someone else do your job,” Sarah points out. No previous experience is necessary as training and support will be provided, but a strong interest is important. If you are interested, please contact Sarah on (01380) 725670, ext 278, or email sarahm@wiltshirewildlife.org. 28.Why are special flowers planted in the nature protection area? A.To attract visitors. B.To attract butterflies. C.To improve the environment. D.To help the local people make money. 29.According to Sarah Marshall, butterflies are ________ A.reducing in number in Wiltshire B.curious about their habitats C.unable to keep up with climate changes D.sensitive to environmental changes 30.According to the text, a volunteer ________. A.will take a different route each time B.must know a lot about butterflies C.will visit the area 6 times in total D.must have previous experience 31.What is the purpose of the text? A.To persuade people to visit Wiltshire. B.To advertise for volunteers with a project. C.To encourage people to protect butterflies. D.To show a way to explore climate change. D Over the past few decades, children have been taking part less in free play and more in organized sports. While doing organized sports has both social and physical benefits for young children, worries about safety and benefits increase. Though most children are naturally likely to be physically active, not all kids are willing to get up and move. 学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司Soccer coach Joseph Luxbacher says, “Every kid has the possibility of being a good sportsman in different kinds of sports. Participating (参加) in organized sports such as the school soccer team introduces direction to children’s physical activities. Following a team schedule gives kids a set time and place to exercise. As a result, kids can be safe from accidents and be protected against physical harm.” What’s more, participating in organized sports gives children time to communicate with others and shows good sportsmanship. For young children who may still be very self-centered, participating in team, sports teach them to think about the group and encourages them to be glad about the success of their teammates. Kids can also benefit from spending time with their coach and having a chance to develop a positive (良好的) relationship with an adult other than their parents, especially if the coach is both skilled and devoted (全心全意的) to being a positive instructor. Playing organized sports requires a lot of time for practice and games, so it would seem that this could influence students’ study. Actually it can ameliorate students’ test performance. That’s because to play organized sports well, players have to memorize information, do repetitive actions, and learn from teammates. All these types of learning skills can make students score higher. Since stress can come from many different sources — parents, coaches, teammates or themselves — many children who participate in organized sports feel pressured to succeed. While a little stress can be helpful in leading children to perform with increased focus and strength, too much stress will leave young kids feeling very tired. Organized sports are more likely to put the right amount of pressure on them. 32.What can we learn from Joseph Luxbacher’s words? A.Organized sports can help develop kids’ talents. B.Most children prefer free play to organized sports. C.Most children have a set time and place to exercise. D.Organized sports can better protect kids from injuries. 33.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A.Ways to attract kids to organized sports. B.Standards of a good organized sports coach. C.Social skills developed by playing organized sports. D.Positive parent-child relationships built by doing sports. 34.What does the underlined word “ ameliorate” mean in paragraph 4? A.Score. B.Record. C.Check. D.Improve. 35.What is the best title for the text? A.How organized sports can benefit children B.How to coach children in organized sports C.How organized sports put pressure on children D.How to be a good teammate in organized sports 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 学学科科网网((北北京京))股股份份有有限限公公司司How can you become good at learning a foreign language? Mother’s Day was coming, but he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without any money?” he thought. Tom picked up the newspaper that was lying on the sofa. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring(赞助)a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a beautiful and precious gift for her.” said the advertisement. “This is perfect!” thought Tom. He ran to his room with the newspaper. After taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write. “My mom is the best mother in the world.
