An owl (猫头鹰) named Flaco escaped New York’s Central Park Zoo last week after his cage was broken.
This set off a bird-hunt of police officers and park rangers (护林员). Zoo officials worried that Flaco, who had been
kept in his zoo cage for 13 years, may have lost the survival abilities he needed in the wild. They placed some of
his favorite treats in the open air to attempt to trap him.
Flaco was not fooled. Instead, he was sighted flying over 5th Avenue, and Central Park’s skating rink. A
number of New Yorkers came into Central Park to try to catch a glimpse of Flaco, taking photos with excitement.
But this week, zoo officials announced they accepted that Flaco remained in Central Park because he had been
seen bringing up bones and fur from the park’s community of rats. “He has been very successful at hunting and
consuming lots of rats in the park.” zoo officials told the New York Post.“ And that’s amazing. He’s hunting on his
own. He’s flying better. Flaceo really seems to be enjoying himself out there.”
There is a caution attached to this story of an owl who is making it on his own in the city that never sleeps.
Owls are nocturnal. They go around searching for food at night. They sleep during the day, or try to, like lots of
people who work the overnight shift. Yet some New Yorkers who don’t know proper bird-watching behavior
reportedly see Flaco sleep in a tree during the day, and begin to shout at him. It interrupts his sleep. Flaco can’t try
to say “shh, shh” with the traditional New York reply. After all, a bird can’t give someone the bird.
4. Why were zoo officials concerned about Flaco’s ability to survive?
A. Because his favourite food was too little.
B. Because he was kept in his cage for long.
C. Because his cage was severely damaged.
D. Because he might be attacked by police.
5. What can we infer about Flaco from the third paragraph?
A. He dislikes the rats in the park. B. He has found his previous home.
C. He has adapted to the wild. D.He still faces great challenges.
6. What does the underlined word “nocturnal” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Badly-behaved. B. Shy and quiet.
C. Scary-looking. D. Active at night.
7. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the interruption to Flaco’s sleep?
A. Cautious. B. Disapproving. C. Unclear. D.Favorable.

The 2026 World Cup final will be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, organizers FIFA announced on
Sunday. The New York held off a strong challenge from Dallas to win the July 19 game, the culmination (高潮) ofthe expanded 48-team tournament (锦标赛) being co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico.
The competition will kick-off with the opening game at Mexico City’s iconic Azteca Stadium on June 11.
Atlanta and Dallas will host the semi-finals while the third-place game will be played in Miami. The quarter-final
games will take place in Los Angeles, Kansas City, Miami and Boston. A total of 16 cities across the three countries
will host games, while most of the matches will be held in the US.
The New York had lobbied(游说)hard on the city’s experience at hosting major international events and its
position as a global city with easy transportation connections for fans. There is some compensation for Dallas with
the spot being given nine total games — the most of any spot. Los Angeles had also thrown a hat into the ring, but
the attempt struggled among disagreements with FIFA about tournament upgrades (升级) needed to National
Football League playground, SoFi Stadium. The Azteca will become the first stadium to host the World Cup
tournament games in three separate editions after 1970 and 1986.
The World Cup will take place during celebrations of the 250th anniversary of American independence. A
round-of-16 game will be held on July 4, Independence Day, in Philadelphia, where the US Declaration of
Independence was signed.
The expansion of the tournament to 48 teams from 32 means there will be an additional 24 matches, making
up 104 games across the 16 chosen playgrounds. The tournament will take 12 groups, with the top two going
through and the eight best third-placed teams. From there, the competition is a straight knock-out format until the
champion is determined.
8. Which city will hold most matches?
A. Dallas. B. Azteca. C. New York. D.Los Angeles.
9. What made Los Angeles fail to host the 2026 World Cup final?
A. It has hosted the World Cup games in three separate editions.
B. It has no experiences in hosting major international events.
C. It isn’t a global city with easy transportation connections.
D. Its stadium doesn’t agree with the FIFA requirement.
10. What can we learn about the Azteca Stadium from the text?
A. It will host the fourth World Cup tournament game.
B. It is located in New Jersey of the United States.
C. It will host the first game of the tournament.
D. It will celebrate its 250th anniversary during the tournament.
11. How many teams will advance to the second stage?
A. 12. B. 24. C. 32. D. 48.

Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at the same
time: rolling (翻滚) forward. turning like a record and following a path that goes around a central point. The
equipment, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for developing soft robots that can
be used to AA-head and map unknown environments.
The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots (扭曲环机器人) . They are made of something like the ribbon
(缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.
When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than the
surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls. “The ribbon rolls on its
horizontal axis (横轴) , giving the ring forward strength,” says Jie Yin, a professor of mechanical and aerospace
engineering.
The twisted ring-bot also turns along its central axis. And as the twisted ring-bot moves forward it travels in a
path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the twisted ring-bot meets a boundary-
like the wall of a box-it will travel along the boundary.
The twisted ring-bots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is governed by physical intelligence,
meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they are made of, rather than being
directed by a computer or human.
“Soft robotics is still a relatively new field.” Yin says. “Finding new ways to control the movement of soft
robots in a repeatable and engineered way moves the field forward. And advancing our understanding of what is
possible is exciting.”
12. What makes the robot roll faster and faster?
A. The shape and material. B. The higher surface temperature.
C. The ribbon. D. The central axis.
13. How does the author introduce the new soft robots?
A. By quoting experts’ opinions. B. By explaining the robot’s working ways.
C. By making some comparisons. D. By offering reasons and results.
14. What is Yin’s attitude towards twisted ring-bots?
A.Favourable. B.Unclear. C. Negative. D. Doubtful.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Twisted Rings and the Axis B. Ribbons and Their Rolling
C. Three Creative Movements D. The New Soft Robots
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Losing a small wetland might not seem like a big problem for the whole world or even a whole country. 16
Now, when it rains, the town gets flooded. And it’s terrible for the special animals and plants that live there.
Luckily, countries and international groups are starting to see how important wetlands are — both for local
places and the whole world. Some have made “no-net-loss” rules to make sure the total number of wetlands won’t
get smaller. 17
18 For example, over $10 billion (£8.2 billion) has been used on a 35-year plan to fix the Florida
Everglades. This is a special group of subtropical wetlands, and it’s the biggest and most expensive ecological
repair project in the world.
Many places are also making new wetlands. In Britain, beavers (水獭) are being brought back to some
enclosed areas. It’s hoped this will make more wetlands in the country, and bring all the good things these homes
can give. Beaver dams (坝) and the wetlands they make can cut flooding by up to 60%. 19 One study found
that because of these cute “workers”, the number of local mammal (哺乳动物) types went up by 86%.
It doesn’t really matter if the world has lost 20% or 50% of its wetlands. 20 As the UN said recently, 1
billion people depend on wetlands to make a living. Saving and fixing these important homes is key to having a
future where we can live well without harming the planet.
A. But it’s really bad for the nearby town.
B. They also help more wild animals live there.
C. Wetlands provide food and homes for beavers.D. After all, wetlands seem less important than rivers.
E. That means builders must fix any wetlands they destroy.
F. Wetlands are being protected around the world at huge costs.
G. What matters is that people stop regarding wetlands as useless.
