The fear of rejection is one of my biggest fears, right after long-legged and fast moving
insects. I had so many experiences of crawling into my head in a crowded space with constant
高三英语试题 第4页(共12页)seK-conscious thoughts about
not fitting in, constantly feeling like someone was only looking
at me because I hadsomething on my face, which made me
:stressed. So keeping myself in a
"fend doing things that I knew I cloud perform wdl
on was my favorite pastime. But
"ep out sooner or later, with the first important out-of-tny-comfort-xonc experience
applying to college.
1 applied to many colleges. When I received my first college rejection. I remember my
face was surely red and my heart was pounding out of my chest while 1 waited for the school
internet to connect faster. I opened the portal (AO) and when the letter started with "Thank
you for your application to our university. After a careful review"** I felt my face growing
hotter.
This fear was applicable anywhere else: fear of getting rejected from a job offert fear of having
the project or ideas rejected, or even the fear of being rejected from a friend group, among so many
other situations. Because of this fear, I missed out on so many opportunities to grow.
This fear hung over me until 1 conversed quite by accident with my teacher, Mr Smith,
who was a very understanding person. and told him my inner thoughts. He told me
everything we did had rejection attached to it in some way. Receiving rejections did not mean,
we're not good enough, but meant that we tried our best for the time being. Being rejected
was terrible while but for experiencing the scariness, we would not grow or even succeed.
When we succeeded in whatever we did, the reward tasted sweeter than something that was
easily obtained.
I decided to be comfortabJe with this fear. Now, the result does get easier; I am
annoyed at the rejection less, being able to bounce back and submit another application
quicker. Along the journey of rejections, I realized that I wasn't incapable but could gain a
lot during the process. And that was enough.
24. What strategy did the author initially adopt to avoid the fear of rejection?
A. Performing the things easily done.
B. Facing the fear of rejection actively.
1 'i, li'* , .J l it -
C. Stepping out of the comfortable zone.
D. Taking on stressful tasks continuously.
25. How did the author feel when checking the first college reply?
A. Pleased but anxious. B. Concerned and nervous.
C. Excited but uneasy. D. Relieved and calm.
高三英语试题 第5页(共12页)26. What changed the author's attitude to the fear of rejection?
A. A heated debate. B. An insightful class.
C. An unexpected talk. D. A painful experience.
27. What can we learn from the author's experiences with rejections?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. No rainbow without rain.
C. Strike while the iron is hot. D. Opportunity knocks but once.
C
Recently, a landmark study has revealed that many fruits and vegetables contain less
protein* iron and vitamin C than they did in the 1950s, though carbohydrates (碳水化合物)
levels have increased. Researchers believe a crucial factor for this phenomenon is the rising
CO2 levels in Earth's changing atmosphere.
Within the next 50 years • CO2 concentrations are expected to reach 550 parts per
million* which is almost double the amount measured before the mid-19th century. Research
shows that increased CO2 levels will affect 95 percent of plant species by causing essential
mineral levels to drop by 6 to 8 percent. Though this decrease may sound negligiblet it will
have far-reaching consequences for global health.
The impacts of an increasingly carbon-concentrated atmosphere were first observed in
zooplankton (浮游动物).tiny sea creatures that primarily feed on algae (海藻).Scientists
found that shining lights on water caused more algae to grow in it, which should have
benefited the hungry zooplankton. Instead* the zooplankton struggled to survive. That's
because the algae grew faster at a lower nutritional quality. In other words, the lower-
nutrition algae restricted the zooplankton's ability to multiply. Similarly« the land plants*
which rely on both light and CO2 to grow, also experienced a decreased nutritional value with
rising CO: levels» as land plants can more easily transform sunlight and CO: into higher
concentration of carbohydrates at the expense of protein* iron and other essential nutrients.
Will the increase of carbohydrates and consequent decrease of other nutrients in your
meals make a difference to your health? Nutrient-rich plants are critical for tackling health
problems around the world • and lower levels of nutrients put fragile populations at risk. For
instance* estimates show that 150 million people may be at risk for protein deficiency (不足)
by 2050» and iron deficiency may affect a billion pregnant women within the same time
frame. Increasing COt levels will cause chain effects throughout the ecosystem in ways

29. What does the underlined word **negligible" mean in pnrAgrnph 27
A. Avoidable. B, McasuMble.

Fruit flies have attracted brain scientists for decades because the insects' small brains are
capable of complex behaviors, like flying, fighting, and even mating (求偶)singing. For
example, when a male fruit fly sings a love song to a potential mate, he freestyles, says
Mala Murthy, a professor of neuroscience (神经科学)at Princeton University. "He chooses
exactly what to sing based on feedback from the female fly,“ she says.
To understand how the neurons in a fruit fly do so much, you need to know how they're
connected, Murthy says. "H you're trying to figure out how the brain generates viewpoints,
thoughtsr actions," she says, “you really need to understand how information flows from
sensory receptors to the motor outputs of the brain. M So Murthy and her colleague Sebastian
Seung led a team of scientists to learn how a healthy brain's wiring influences its function.
They also hope to understand how “miswiring" leads to disordered conditions ranging from

Just then, the fish erm a?i ran up without hesitation. He jumped into the ocean and swam
towards Denise, with his single body fighting against the huge waves bravely. Fortunately, he
managed to grasp Denise's hand. With surprising strength, he pulled her out of the water and
brought her safely to the beach. Frightened and worried, Denise's friend ran quickly towards
Denise. Once Denise was safe and sound, the fisherman, breathing heavily, stood there for a
minute to ensure she was in good condition.
Making sure Devise was safe, the fisherman simply turned around and was about to
leave. Overwhelmed witli gratirude, Denise thanked the fisherman from the bottom of her
heart for his courageous rescue. This Efe-threatening experience served as a tough lesson,
teaching her the significance of honoring nature's strength and cherishing life. As the
fisherman walked away, his kind-hearted act of heroism left a deep impression on her,
showing selflessness could even be found iin the most unexpected places. From then on,
Denise promised to pay forward the kindness she received, making a commitment to always
help others in need.
