Cai Lei former vice-president of JD Group, reveals how amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis
(诊断) set him on the path to find a cure.
Born to a farmer’s family in 1978, Cai has been deeply influenced by his father’s idea that “one has to fight for
himself”. Since primary school, he has been getting up before 5 am to run and study English. At 29, Cai became chief
tax manager in Vanke Co. In 2011, he joined JD Group, where he led his team to develop the first electronic invoice
(发票) in China. Wherever he worked, he always tried his best to create new value.
Diagnosed with ALS in 2019, he would have only two to five years to live. ALS is usually caused by the gradual
death of motor neurons(神经元), which makes normally easy movements like drinking water, eating, going to the
bathroom, and speaking impossible. Finally, patients will completely rely on machines and others’ help to survive.
So far, only two medicines are available to treat ALS, but they can at most extend patients’ life for several months
without improving their living quality.
To develop effective drugs is the only way to save ALS patients. However, the intense effort required, which is
unprofitable for so rare an illness, makes it a mission almost impossible. It usually takes 10-15 years to complete the
research cycle for a new drug and the cost is $1-3billion. Take Alzheimer’s disease for example. Between 2000 and
2017, investment in new drugs for this more common disease was over $600 billion, and 99.6% of the research onmore than 300 drugs failed.
Cai decided to take matters into his own hands. He started his own medical technology company, built his own
research team, and volunteered to try more than 30 new medicines which all failed. However, he has decided that
even if all efforts prove fruitless, he will continue. To shoot the last bullet, he has decided to donate his brain and
spinal cord for scientific research. He will not die for nothing.
24. What kind of person is Cai Lei?
A. Extremely gifted and ambitious.
B. Hard-working and warm-hearted.
C. Quite responsible and dependable.
D. Highly motivated and strong-willed.
25. What might happen to people diagnosed with ALS?
A. Losing the ability to think and speak normally.
B. Maintaining a normal life by taking medicines.
C. Dying within months of a confirmed diagnosis.
D. Needing external assistance to survive in the end.
26. Why is Alzheimer’s disease mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To talk about the severity of Alzheimer.
B. To prove Alzheimer to be a common disease.
C. To explain the difficulty of finding a cure for ALS.
D. To ask for more investment in the research on ALS.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Joint efforts to fight ALS B. A man who never gives in
C. ASL, a rare deadly disease D. Suffering of a man with ALS

We know our workplace clothing choices can affect what others think us and influence our success. Do those
choices also shape productivity by affecting how we see ourselves?
Researchers conducted two experiments in the United States and a field study in South Korea to investigate the
meanings employees associate with their dress. In the first experiment, participants viewed photos of different
outfits (套装) and indicated what they thought each would convey in a “business-casual” office. In the second,
participants first changed into business-casual clothing and then into new business-casual outfits they selected to
correspond with one of three randomly assigned characteristics: aesthetics (美学), conformity (一致性).uniqueness.
A control group was asked to select an outfit similar to their first one. All participants were told to imagine that theyworked at a company where people could generally wear what they wanted to and where most choose business-casual
dress. After each clothing change they reported on how they would feel going to work in what they had on, what they
thought their clothing would convey, and their level of self-esteem (自尊).
The experiments showed that people associate clothing high in aesthetics with personal attractiveness conforming
clothing with a sense belong, and unique clothing with distinctiveness. and revealed that each of the three qualities
raised self-esteem.
The field study involved 84 white-col1ar employees who worked on-site and were free to choose their clothes
They filled out three questionnaires daily for 10days, reporting on what they were wearing, their self-esteem, their
interactions with colleagues and their productivity. Aesthetic and unique clothing boosted self-esteem, which in turn
boosted progress toward job goals and decreased social avoidance. Dress conformity had similar effects, but only
when employees frequently interacted with colleagues.
“Investing a little extra time in the morning to prepare an outfit that is aesthetically pleasing and unique-and, if
interactions with others are expected, highly conforming to organizational standards—can have a meaningful impact
on how an employee feels about themselves throughout the workday,” the researchers write.
28. The researchers carried out the experiments to find out______.
A. what types of clothing employees like to wear
B. whether employees can choose the dress they like
C. why dress conformity is required in the workplace
.
D how employees feel about their workplace clothing
29. What did all the participants do in the second experiment?
A. Work at the same company.
B. View photos of different outfits.
C. Report their feelings about clothes.
D. Select dress from three types randomly.
30. What can we know about the findings in Paragraph 4?
A. Three assigned types have the same effects.
B. Unique clothing can increase social avoidance.
C. Conforming clothing can strengthen coworkers’ bonds.
D. Aesthetic clothing has more advantages over other types.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Try Different Dress Styles
B. Dress Up To Be More AttractiveC. Wear Proper Clothes To Fit In Society
D. Be Smart About Workplace Clothing

Scientists have shown how plants can protect themselves against genetic (基因的) damage caused by
environmental stresses. The growing tips of plant roots and shoots have an in-built mechanism (机制) that spells
cell death if DNA damage is detected, avoiding passing on faulty DNA.
Plants have small populations of stem cells (干细胞) at the tips of their roots and shoots, which enable them to
continuously grow and produce new tissues throughout their lifetime. These stem cells serve as ancestors for plant
tissues and organs. However, any genetic faults present in the stem cells will continue to exist and be passed on
permanently throughout the plant’s life, which could last thousands of years.
Given the critical role of stem cells and their exposure to potentially dangerous environments at the growing
tips of roots and shoots, safeguards are necessary to prevent stem cell faults from becoming fixed. Researchers
Nick Fulcher and Robert Sablowski, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council,
aimed to uncover these protective mechanisms. Through experiments involving X-rays and chemicals, they
discovered that stem cells were more sensitive to DNA damage compared to other cells.
When DNA damage occurs, the cells have the capacity to detect it and cause programmed cells to die,
preventing the propagation of the damaged genetic code to the rest of the plant tissues. This process has
similarities to the safeguard mechanism found in animal cells, which has been broadly studied due to its relevance
in preventing cancer.
The identification of a similar protective system in plants is of great interest in the field of plant development.
It also helps scientists develop plants that can better handle environmental stress. So knowledge of how plants deal
with these stresses is of fundamental significance to agricultural science’s response to climate change.
32. What is the function of the in-built mechanism in plants?
A. To produce more roots and shoots. B. To increase the overall lifetime of the plant.
C. To enhance plant growth and nutrient intake. D. To stop genetic faults in stem cells passing on.
33. What can we know about stem cells in plants according to the text?
A. They are relatively abundant in quantity. B. They are resistant to environmental stresses.
C. They make quick response to DNA damage. D. They have the ability to repair damaged DNA.
34. What does the underlined word “propagation” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Spread. B. Change. C. Existence. D. Self-repair.
35. What does the last paragraph focus on?
A. The way of dealing with climate change on the earth.B. The significance of identifying the protective system in plants.
C. The method of ensuring plant survival under environmental stress.
D. The urgency of developing plants that can handle environmental stress.

I spent 15 years trying to make it in the music industry. When I was a teenager, I did any odd job to afford time
in a recording studio. I knocked at managers’ doors and sent out demo (录音样带) after demo, but I got nowhere. In
2010, aged 27, I was doing a job in a restaurant when I wrote a song called Dream Goes On. It was a song about
never giving up. I just let out all of my frustrations at the keyboard.
Over the next five years, the music career never materialized but I persisted. Then, in 2019, I uploaded Dream
Goes On to a music-sharing website. I just wanted someone to notice my music.
Later that year, I received an email out of the blue from Music World from South Korea, requesting a license for
the song. They had chosen my song from the millions on the music-sharing website for a theme tune for one of their
shows. I was amazed and negotiated a contract for $5,000 for the use of the song and signed up straight away. I was
pretty excited, but didn’t think anything more would come of it, so I focused on my job in the restaurant.
This February, Music World organized a musical festival in Seoul and my song Dream Goes On was also
chosen as the theme tune for the festival. I watched on YouTube as my song was being played to a huge crowd of
people. It was amazing.
After three days of the festival, I was contacted by Music World and they asked if I’d like to go to Seoul to
sing Dream Goes On in a concert. They flew me out there the next day. I was welcomed like a celebrity—everyone I
met thought I was a big name in England. I had to break the news to them that I wasn’t a pop star.
