I have always been passionate about art, but with children to feed and educate, pursuing it
seemed impossible. At 83, I finally registered for art school. Born in 1933, I led a life marked by
family struggles but also resilience ( 适应力). I studied mechanical engineering and later
management, becoming an associate professor at business school, where I now hold emeritus
(荣誉退休的) status.
About ten years ago, after my wife fell ill with Alzheimer’s and required care, I turned to
painting. Determined to take this new path seriously, I applied to an art programme in Barcelona,
insisting on painting despite advice to study art history. Balancing my studies with work, it took
me seven years to complete the four-year course, graduating last year at the age of 90.Returning to school was a challenge; everything had changed since my earlier education.
Most of my classmates were in their 20s, but they welcomed me warmly, often seeking my advice
due to my life experience. I encountered some resistance from a couple of teachers early on, but
I kept going.
The first two years focused on flowers, still lifes, and landscapes, before we explored
abstraction, which I enjoy most. I believe that talent comes from hard work; sometimes I feel
stuck, but I push through. My artistic influences include Spanish painters like Francisco de
Zurbarán and Joaquín Sorolla, and while I appreciate beauty, I value goodness and truth even
more.
I create abstract landscapes from memory, expressing my emotions through colour. I paint
primarily on weekends and during holidays. While I don’t plan to exhibit extensively, my work
was displayed in a small village for six months, though it received little attention.
After a lifetime in engineering and education, I may not fully identify as an artist, but I now
have the recognition that supports my journey into art.
24.Why did the author decide to pursue art at 83?
A.To find cures for Alzheimer’s. B.To change his career path.
C.To pursue his passion for art. D.To support his big family.
25.How did the author’s classmates react to him?
A.They enjoyed his company. B.They tended to ignore him.
C.They inspired him to go on. D.They resisted his presence.
26.Which best describes the author’s art journey?
A.Eventful. B.Romantic. C.Casual. D.Challenging.
27.What would be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Struggle of Old Artists. B.From Engineering to Art.
C.The Value of Art Education. D.A Lifetime of Art Pursuit.

Emergency Mask Pod (面罩舱) is a plastic, 3D-printed and football-shaped case that
contains a mask that protects the lungs of someone trapped in a fire until they were rescued.
Alexis got the idea for the Emergency Mask Pod after hearing that a mother had thrown her baby
out of the second floor window of their smoke-filled apartment during a fire in the building. The
family was trapped in their apartment by the smoke.Alexis wondered whether there was a means for people waiting outside, such as neighbors
and first responders, to deliver smoke masks to people trapped in the second floors of burning
buildings. Her research showed that there was no such delivery system, so Alexis set about to
invent one.
First, she found a small, lightweight smoke mask. The next step was to develop a way to
launch or throw the mask up into an open second-story window. Alexis built several different
pods, which were tested by local firefighters. Each pod was cast into a second story window more
than 290 times by a total of 37 firefighters. The football-shaped pod, which Alexis printed on her
MakerBot 3D printer, was the clear winner, with an accuracy rate of over 70 percent.
The firefighters testing the Emergency Mask Pod told her that it is needed by firefighters
arriving at the scene of a fire. They told Alexis that when they find people trapped inside, they
wish they could give them some form of relief so they can breathe safely while firefighters try to
reach them. A smoke delivery system could be used to provide that relief.
The Emergency Mask Pod requires no special equipment, training, or permits; people at
the scene of a fire could help fire victims (受害者) trapped inside smoky rooms without
hesitation. EMTs, police officers, and firefighters could keep the mask and EM Pod in their
vehicles and apartment complexes could store them in approachable places like community
centers. The mask could easily be retrieved by victims and put on, giving them precious time for
firefighters to rescue them and potentially saving hundreds or thousands of lives.
28.Why is the Emergency Mask Pod invented?
A.To improve the design of smoke masks.
B.To provide a way to deliver smoke masks.
C.To help firefighters practice throwing skills.
D.To protect first responders’ eyes from smoke.
29.How did Alexis test the effectiveness of different pods?
A.By burning them in the local fire departments.
B.By studying different materials for making pods.
C.By doing a survey of people trapped in a fire before.
D.By having firefighters throw them into windows many times.
30.Which word is closest in meaning to “retrieved” in the last paragraph?A.Returned. B.Accessed. C.Relieved. D.Launched.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Surviving the Flame: New Rescue Skills
B.Smoke and Masks: The Future of Fire Safety
C.A Lifeline through the Smoke: The Mask Pod
D.Breaking through Barriers: Firefighters’ Creations

David Strayer, an expert in attention at the University of Utah never texts or talks on a
phone when he is driving. His research shows that, when driving, using a phone can be as
dangerous as drinking alcohol.
Despite many warnings, multitasking is increasingly common. It is found that people in the
United States switch tasks on their computers 566 times a day. However, when people spend
hours on digital devices constantly switching between activities, the overall productivity
decreases. Too much multitasking reduces the ability to think clearly and creatively and to
remember information. This, in turn, can result in stress.
What is the best cure for the overstressed minds? David Strayer says the answer is simple:
Spend some time in nature. When people are in natural environments, the prefrontal cortex (the
brain’s control center) relaxes. Studies show that when people can see trees and grass, they are
calmer and do better in school.
In a study at Chiba University in Japan, 84 subjects went for a 15-minute walk in seven
different forests. The same number of people walked around different city centers. Researchers
then took blood from each person. The forest walkers had a 16 percent decrease in the stress
hormone cortisol. In addition, they had a 2 percent drop in blood pressure and a 4 percent drop
in heart rate. All did better than the city walkers. Lead researcher Yoshifumi Miyazaki has an
explanation for these results. Our bodies relax in pleasant natural surroundings, he says. Humans
evolved in that environment, not in places with tall buildings and lots of traffic.
Strayer says it is the visual details in nature — sunsets, streams, butterflies that reduce
stress and mental tiredness. People enjoy them without having to concentrate on them, which
allows the brains to rest and recover from the stresses of modern life. “Imagine a therapy (疗法)
that was readily available, and could improve the cognitive (认知的) functioning at zero cost,”
Strayer says. “It exists: it’s called ‘interacting with nature.’”32.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The cure for the reduction of creativity. B.The harmful effects caused by multitasking.
C.The common use of multitasking in the USA. D.The reason for the popularity of
multitasking.
33.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a likely benefit of seeing nature?
A.Faster reaction speeds. B.Better school performance.
C.Improved mental function. D.Feelings of calm and relaxation.
34.How did the researchers get the result of their study?
A.By doing surveys. B.By analyzing cause and effect.
C.By making comparisons. D.By explaining the phenomenon.
35.What does Strayer think about “interacting with nature”?
A.It requires a lot of concentration to be effective.
B.It only works for people who enjoy natural views.
C.It is a free and accessible treatment to reduce stress.
D.It is an expensive therapy that improves brain function.

There is no better feeling than taking control of your life and finding the power to make
your dreams come true. Here’s how to make it happen.
Believe in yourself
Although it is easier said than done, having a strong belief in yourself is the first step to
successfully achieving your dreams. 36 If self-confidence is something that you struggle
with, there are many activities that you can do to build your self-esteem, like stepping out of your
comfort zone and accepting new challenges.
Develop an action plan
37 If you want to launch a business, create a timeline that outlines the steps you
need to take. If you have a goal of saving more money, draw up a budget that outlines your
income and expenses.
Once you have the initial vision mapped out, break down each step into manageable
chunks and assign them deadlines. 38 And as you complete action items and cross
them off your list, your big daunting goal will start to feel more and more achievable.Take risks
Risk is more than just a four-letter word — it is an essential part of achieving success.
Taking risks means seeking out new opportunities and pushing yourself to expand your comfort
zone. If you feel frightened or even paralyzed by risk, recognize that there are only two potential
outcomes: success or failure. 39
By following these strategies and remaining dedicated to your goals, you can empower
yourself to reach for the stars! 40 You are only ever a few steps away from fulfillment
and success.
A.After all, conquering your dreams is no easy task.
B.And the experience gained from either is invaluable.

The guqin, or qin, is a seven-stringed classical instrument and has a history in China of
about 5,000 years. Some scholars consider the qin as 56 only type of instrument that
captures the essence of traditional Chinese culture.
The guqin is usually about four feet 57 length, with a head, neck, shoulders

board represents Heaven, 59 the flat underside represents the Earth.
With more than 1,000 different finger techniques, the guqin is one of the 60

The blank canvas (画布) stared back at me, its whiteness scarier than any exam I’d ever
taken. My fingers trembled as I held the paintbrush. “Remember, class,” Mrs. Larson’s voice
echoed in my mind, “your final project should reflect your personal journey this semester.” I
swallowed hard. Three months ago, I wouldn’t have dared to set foot in this room. Art had always
been Mia’s territory (领地) — my best friend since third grade who could make magic happen
with just a pencil and paper.
It all started on that rainy September afternoon in the library when I was drawing on mymath notebook. Mia had picked it up before I could stop her. “Amazing, Lily!” she said, her green
eyes wide with genuine excitement. “The way you play with negative space (留白) ... you have to
join art club!”
Now, as I looked at the pile of failed attempts beside me — a sunset that looked like a
traffic light. I wondered if I’d made a terrible mistake. The Spring Art Exhibition was just two days
away, and my confidence was fading faster than the cheap watercolors on my practice sheets. A
soft knock stopped my thoughts. Mia popped her head in. “Still here?” She slid into the seat
beside me, eyeing my latest failure. “You’re overthinking it,” she said gently. “Art isn’t about
perfection. It’s about...”
“Expression, I know,” I finished for her, sighing. But how could I express what I didn’t even
understand myself? The bell rang, signaling the end of after-school hours. Mia hesitated at the
door. “Just...try painting how you feel, not what you see.”As her footsteps faded down the
hallway, I turned back to the blank canvas. For the first time, I noticed how the afternoon sun
streaming through the windows made the white surface shine like fresh snow. Taking a deep
breath, I reached for the black paint.
