第二章阅读理解
(一)
“I wouldn’t be here today if not for the generosity of strangers,” said Michael Moritz, while
announcing a major donation to Oxford University. A former Time Magazine reporter, Mr. Moritz
left journalism to become one of the most successful venture capitalists in Silicon Valley.
Through Sequoia Capital, the firm be joined in 1986 and has led for many years, Mr. Moritz was
an early investor in Google, Yahoo, PayPal and LinkedIn. His personal fortune is estimated at
well over $1 billion. Oxford University announced last Wednesday that he and his wife, the
novelist Harriet Heyman, donated £75 million, or $115 million, to fund a new scholarship
program aimed at providing financial aid to students from low-income backgrounds. Behind the
headlines about the size of the gift was a family story of immigration, education and a sense of
obligation that transcended generations.
“I grew up in Cardiff, went to an ordinary comprehensive school, and was the only pupil in
my year to go to Oxbridge,” Mr. Moritz explained. “My father was plucked as a teenager from
Nazi Germany and was able to attend a very good school in London on a Scholarship.” In an
interview afterward, Mr. Moritz said that his father, Alfred, had grown up in Munich, where his
father was a judge who lost his post when the Nazis came to power. Mr. Moritz’s mother, Doris,
was part of the Kindertransport, a rescue effort that took about 9,300 unaccompanied, mostly
Jewish children from Germany, Austria, Poland and Czechoslovakia to Britain shortly before the
outbreak of World War Ⅱ.“ My father’s cousin, Fritz Ursell, was also rescued from terrible
circumstances. When he came to Britain, he also benefited from scholarships, and grew up to
become a member of the Royal Society,” said Mr. Moritz.
“It is all too easy not to remember,” said Mr. Moritz, who has a history major and the editor
of Isis, Oxford’s student literary magazine, as an undergraduate before completing an MBA at the
Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania. In May, Mr. Moritz announced that he had been
diagnosed with a rare medical condition which is incurable. But he preferred not to name the
disease. “I felt I wanted to be my partners and with the public. But I didn’t want every ghoul on
the internet following me.”

Charlotte Anderson, a second-year student studying German at Oxford and the first person in
her family to go to a university, said that anxiety about taking on debt had nearly kept her from
accepting the offer from the school. “it’s great to think that future students who follow me can do
so without the fear that I went through.” She said while attending the news conference. Asked
whether the university’s campaign to finance student scholarships through private donations
rather than government funding meant that Oxford was giving up efforts to secure more public
support, the university’s chancellor, Chris Patten, a former Conservative minister to Prime
Miniter Margaret Thatcher and John Major, joked that he was “no longer allowed to have any
political views.”

Wirecard AG is negotiating with representatives of Alipay—a unit of Chinese ecommerce
giant Alibaba, about it taking a stake of up to 25 percent in the German banking software
company, a newspaper reported on Sunday.
Without citing its sources, the Bild am Sonntag weekly said Wirecard was in confidential
talks with Alipay about it taking a stake of up to 25 percent, and possibly more later. A Wirecard
spokeswoman declined to comment on the specifics of the report but confirmed that the company
was in strategic talks with various partners, without elaborating. A source familiar with the matter
said Ant Financial, which operates the Alipay platform, was not talking to Wirecard about an
investment.
In December, the two companies agreed to a deal to provide mobile phone payment services
for Chinese tourists visiting Europe. The newspaper said both sides had an interest in the deal:
The Chinese want access to German expertise, while Wirecard would like to have a large
shareholder, because its share price has come under pressure from short sellers. A deal would
mark the latest Chinese investment in a German firm after a 4.5-billion-euro takeover bid by
China's Midea for German industrial robot maker Kuka.
Alipay counts more than 400 million active users of its payment systems in China,
representing an estimated 80 percent of the mobile payments market and 50 percent of the online
market in the world’s second-largest economy. Its electronic wallet system is widely used in both
retail shops and for online transactions.

Why is Salt Bad for You?
FRANK LE CLAIR, a 58-year-old provincial government employee living in Winnipeg, had
no idea that his blood pressure was too high. While out of town last winter, he came down with a
cold and a sore throat and decided to see a local doctor.
Apart from checking his cold symptoms, the doctor also gave him a general health-check.
The doctor found that Frank’s blood pressure was higher than normal and advised him to see his
regular physician as soon as he got home.
Le Clair’s physician referred him to the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, where dietitians
told him that he might be able to control his blood pressure by changing his lifestyle rather than
by taking drugs. People with high blood pressure have to control or eliminate four elements:
smoking, drinking, food quantities and salt. Le Clair doesn’t smoke or drink, but there were some
changes he could make in the other two categories.
The most conclusive evidence so far that a high-salt diet is bad for you is the “Intersalt”
study, involving 10,000 people in 32 countries. It measured the relationship between urinary
sodium excretion—a direct measure of salt consumption—and blood pressure. The study found
that populations with the lowest sodium excretion also have the lowest blood pressures.
Recent studies have shown that “salt sensitivity” is a major factor in the relationship between
a high-salt diet and hypertension. And hypertension is a risk factor for two of the biggest killers in
this country: coronary heart disease and stroke. Frank Le Clair’s high blood pressure was
discovered by chance. There are no warning symptoms – high blood pressure is known as the
silent killer.
A high-salt intake triggers a vicious cycle. Those who are used to a lot of salt in their food
find they need increasing amounts to be able to continue to taste its flavour -- the more salt they
eat, the more they want. It is also an aggravating factor in osteoporosis and is closely linked to
stomach cancer. A high salt intake can be dangerous for people with conditions that are
aggravated by fluid retention, such as hepatitis, liver or kidney problems.

Acknowledging that so-called cloud computing will blur the distinctions between computers
and networks, about two dozen big information technology companies plan to announce a new
standards-setting group for computer networking. The group, to be called the Open Networking
Foundation, hopes to help standardize a set of technologies pioneered at Stanford and the
University of California, Berkeley, and meant to make small and large networks programmable in
much the same way that individual computers are.
The changes, if widely adopted, would have implications for global telecommunications
networks and large corporate data centers, but also for small household networks. The benefits,
proponents say, would be more flexible and secure networks that are less likely to suffer from
congestion. Someday, they say, networks might even be less expensive to build and operate. The
new approach could allow for setting up on-demand “express lanes” for voice and data traffic that
is time-sensitive. Or it might let big telecommunications companies, like Verizon or AT&T, use
software to combine several fiber optic backbones temporarily for particularly heavy information
loads and then have them automatically separate when a data rush hour is over. For households,
the new capabilities might let Internet service providers offer remote services like home security
or energy control.
The foundation’s organizers also say the new technologies will offer ways to improve
computer security and could possibly enhance individual privacy within the e-commerce and
social networking markets. Those markets are the fastest-growing uses for computing and
network resources. While the new capabilities could be crucial to network engineers, for business
users and consumers the changes might be no more noticeable than advances in plumbing,

know- or care- why or how.
The members of the Open Networking Foundation will include Broadcom, Brocade, Ciena,
Cisco, Citrix, Dell, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Facebook, Force10, Google, Hewlett-Packard,
I.B.M., Juniper, Marvell, Microsoft, NEC, Netgear, NTT, Riverbed Technology, Verizon,
VMWare and Yahoo. “This answers a question that the entire industry has had, and that is how
do you provide owners and operators of large networks with the flexibility of control that they
want in a standardized fashion.” said Nick McKeown, a professor of electrical engineering and
computer science at Stanford, where his and colleagues’ work forms part of the technical
underpinnings, called OpenFlow.
The effort is a departure from the traditional way the Internet works. As designed by military
and academic experts in the 1960s, the Internet has been based on interconnected computers that
send and receive packets of data, paying little heed to the content and making few distinctions
among the various types of senders and receivers of information. The intelligence in the original
Internet was meant to reside largely at the end points of the network-the computers-while the
specialized routing computers were relatively dumb post offices of various size, mainly confined
to reading addresses and transferring packets of data to adjacent systems. But these days, when
cloud computing means a lot of the information is stored and processed on computers out on the
network, there is growing need for more intelligent control systems to orchestrate the behavior of
thousands of routing machines. It will make it possible, for example, for managers of large
networks to program their network to prioritize certain types of data, perhaps to ensure quality of
service or to add security to certain portions of a network. The designers argue that because
OpenFlow should open up hardware and software systems that control the flow of Internet data
packets, systems that have been closed and proprietary, it will cause a new round of innovation
focused principally upon the vast computing systems known as cloud computers.
