was one of the largest fires in California's history,”Reshma, now 17,says.Her school was about 200 miles
south of the fire. But students had to wear masks because of the smoke."It was a terrible experience for
me,” she says.It made her want to find a solution. She created a way to use AI to predict forest
fires.Her method is nearly 90%accurate(准确的)。
Recycling power
On his 10th birthday,Sri Nihal Tammana learned a scary fact.Every year,15 billion batteries are
thrown out. They pollute groundwater and harm the environment.Nihal's organization,Recycle My
Battery, provides recycling bins for batteries. It is now a team of 250 student volunteers around the world.
In the past three years, they've helped recycle more than 260,000 batteries.
Rescue effort
Miles Fetherston-Resch,10,is in the business of saving oceans. When he learned that sharks are in
trouble,he persuaded his mom to help him start a nonprofit(非营利的)organization. It's called Kids Saving

Since 2012,remote sensing(遥感)scientist Liu Shaochuang has led a team in tracking and studying
wild camels using satellite remote sensing technology. Liu has studied the relationship between endangered
animals and their environment, which he believes will help develop better protection policies in the face of
climate change.
In the run-up to World Wildlife Day on March 3,2023,Liu's research came under the spotlight, as it
was held up as a successful example of how developed space technology can benefit animal protection
efforts on Earth. Liu works at the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences. His interest in wild camels began when his team tested a design of the lunar rover Yutu in the
desert.
Living in the deserts in northwestern China and southwestern Mongolia, the even-toed camel is listed
as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.Experts believe that the
population of this species is currently less than 1,000,of which around 650 are in China.
"Ten years ago,the research depended on human observation, which was very primitive(原始
的),”Liu says.Because wild Bactrian camels are fully migratory and can travel over long
distances, scientists used to learn their habits by studying footprints and droppings. It was hard to find one
camel in the desert, let alone track it.However,Liu thought his skills in remote sensing might come in
useful in the study of wild camels.

It was not easy at first. Liu had to learn zoology from scratch. His team had to spend several
weeks each year looking for camels. “The most exciting moment was attaching trackers to the wild
camels,”
Liu recalls. On May 6,2012, Liu's team, for the first time, succeeded in putting a satellite positioning
collar(颈圈)on a wild camel in Xinjiang's Lop Nur Desert.
His latest discovery is that the suitable living home has become much smaller because of climate
change, and that wild camels have moved to the colder Altun Mountain Range in China, and higher-
altitude areas in Mongolia as a result.
1.How long has Liu's team tracked wild camels?
A. For about five years.
B.For about nine years.
C.For about eleven years.
D. For about twenty-three years.
2.Which paragraph shows that camels are endangered?
A. Paragraph1.
B. Paragraph 2.
C. Paragraph 3.
D.Paragraph 4.
3.What does the underlined word"migratory" in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Giving food to.
B. Giving birth to the young.
C.Sleeping for the whole winter.
D.Moving from place to place.
4.What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
A. Liu studied zoology at university.
B. Liu put his heart into the research.
C.Wild camels got used to wearing a collar.
D.Wild camels' living home became smaller.
