The four mountain climbers were still breathing heavily as they looked out into the distance. The views from
the top of the mountain were breathtaking. In all directions, valleys, forests and other mountains were laid out
before them. They could even see the small wooden houses of the village where they had spent the night and the
route they had taken to reach the top of this small but dangerous mountain. Laughing loudly, they were surprised at
their courage in climbing such a steep and rocky mountain slope. Filled with an enormous sense of achievement,
the four young climbers patted each other on the back.
As the other three continued to enjoy the views, Jason, the leader of the group, stared at the horizon with a
troubled look on his face.
“What is it, Jason?” Sofia, the youngest of the group, asked.
“Those dark clouds in the distance mean a heavy storm is fast on the way,” Jason replied. He remembered the
villagers had warned him of the unpredictable weather conditions on top of the mountain and that a terrible storm
could appear from nowhere.
“But it's so warm and sunny here. I don't think the storm is coming this way,” Sofia said, more in hope than
expectation.
However, Jason feared the worst and knew only too well what would happen if the storm caught them in the
open. He addressed the group in a calm but serious tone, “If the storm hits us, the temperature will fall dramatically.
The rain and mist will make it difficult for us to see where we are going and we could easily get lost or fall off a
cliff. The wind will take our strength, so we need to get moving fast.”
The four mountain climbers packed up their facilities and immediately started back down the mountain.
Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the storm was upon them sooner than expected. The wind screamed in their
ears, the driving rain stung (刺痛) their eyes and the mist made it impossible for them to see clearly.

Surviving Mount Rainier
Bad luck and poor timing left Kart and three climbers stuck on Mount Rainier for several long days. They
faced mountain climbing’s toughest tests. One man suffered altitude sickness; ice and rockfall rained down at night;
cold nights in a tent that got torn left them hypothermic(体温过低的). Calm confidence, skill and the courage to
continue up the route, despite illness and injury, likely saved their lives.
The climbers set out on a Friday, camping low on the route the first night because they were concerned about
rockfall after a climber had recently died in an accident at the route’s typical high camp. On Saturday, at about
10,500 feet, one of the climbers became sick from the altitude, which began to slow them down. They needed to
keep moving, so they put him in the lead so he could move at a pace he was comfortable with.
By Sunday evening, the ill climber was exhausted, and they had to make an unplanned camp on steep snow.
They were in a bad place—on a platform about the size of a table under an ice cliff. The wind got stronger during
the night, ripping the tent and snapping the poles. They tried to secure it by placing their packs and rocks around
the edges. Finally, they just stuck their feet between the rocks and held the tent with their bodies. It was a coldnight.

Malachi Bradley doesn’t show signs of being panicked or worried when he talks about how he spent 29 hours
lost in a rough area of the High Uintas. “I didn’t really feel scared. I was just trying to get back to my family,” the
10-year-old said Tuesday in a quiet, almost matter-of-fact way just one day after he was rescued. When asked what
happened to him, he simply replied: “A lot of things. I hiked a long way.”
Malachi confidently believes he could have survived two or three weeks on his own, dressed in only his jeans
and his shoes, and with no food, tent or blankets. But the look in the eyes of Malachi’s father, Danny Bradley, told a
different story, one of much deeper concern, when he realized his son was missing. “It’s a horrible feeling, just
knowing how vast the Uinta Mountains are,” he said, “I quickly felt how severe the situation was.”
Malachi recalled his great adventure Tuesday. He showed no signs of going without food for a day or sleepingbetween rocks for an hour at night to block the cold wind. But he admitted when he got home to his own bed on
Monday night that he was asleep within a minute of his head hitting his pillow and stayed there for 12 hours.
His adventure began Sunday when Malachi, his father, two siblings(兄弟姐妹), and a family friend were
about to leave their campsite near Paul Lake to go home. “We were just going to cook up a fish he caught and head
out, and,” Danny Bradley paused, “it ended up being a lot longer.”
Malachi said he went to look for mushrooms about 10:30 a.m. He had just walked a long way when he
encountered a snake. He was so frightened that he decided to get back but he could no longer see the lake where his
campsite was set up. He knew he was lost.

4.(2023·全国·高三专题练习)阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Brady was a recently retired search and rescue dog. He was not happy and missed his owner Al because Al
had gone out on a rescue mission without him. Al’s nephew Steve took Brady along when he and his friend Zach
went on a overnight hike. But suddenly Steve and Zach smelled something burning and they realized that lightning
had set the woods on fire. Wind-blown flame had leaped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer
had turned the forest into a tinderbox(火绒箱) and the thunderstorm wasn’t helping much. It had more wind andlightning than rain. Zach pulled Steve’s arm. “Let’s go! We can make it back to the river we crossed today.”
Steve pulled Brady’s leash(皮带) and their heads down against the strong fire-wind, they hurried down the path
they had followed earlier. The air was full of smoke, and pine branches broke from burning trees with a crisp
sound. Steve kept his eyes on the route. All they had to do was to make it down to the river…
Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a dense curtain of smoke across the path. They’d never
make it through that. They would have to find another escape route. The dog was pulling at his leash trying to draw
them away from the smoke. This was what Brady was trained to do, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him
they were moving away from the river.
Brady lifted his head and smelled the smoky wind. Suddenly, the dog ran away and disappeared. The boys
yelled and shouted for him,but he didn’t come back.
They had no choice but to leave him behind. Heartsick, Steve and Zach went up aslope(斜坡). He
couldn’t blame Brady for panicking and escaping. He himself wanted to run even though he didn’t have a clue
which way. They hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came running toward him.

“Mom, where do you suppose they are?” my ten-year-old son Danny asked for the twentieth time as he stared
out of the window at the range (牧场). “They” were our horses, Ginger, and her three-year-old son, Charcoal, both
of whom had been missing for days.
Our range and woods offered plenty of grass for six horses. However, spring thunderstorms during the past ten
days had forced the nearby river out of its banks. The other horses had come to the barn (畜棚) during thedownpour, but not Ginger or Charcoal.
When the rain stopped, I took Spot, our dog, to do some first-hand searching. We went through trees and brush
in wet lowlands near the river. All my calling and Spot’s smelling were in vain.
The next morning, the sun struggled to shine through gray clouds, but dampness filled the air. Suddenly,
Danny shouted, “Mom, come quick! There’s Ginger!” The horse stood at the range gate crying impatiently and
moving back and forth as if to say “Follow me”.
“Hurry, Danny,” I said, “get the pot with some oats (燕麦). I will bring a rope.” Ginger walked in front and we
followed. “I see him! I see him!” Danny shouted. Charcoal was lying on his side, not moving. His right back leg
was badly injured.
“Oh, Mom. How long do you think he’s been lying here with no food and nobody to care for him?” Tears
formed in Danny’s blue eyes. “Probably several days, but we’ll never know. Ginger took care of him, though,
protecting him from attacks from hungry wolves or other wild animals,” I said.
“What can we do now?” Danny asked anxiously. “There’s no way to drive a vehicle down here in all this
mud.” “We just have to get him up and lead him out,” I said, keeping my voice confident. “Afterwards, we’ll have
to call the vet (兽医) out.”

My Dad and Little Joe
Dad and Mom immigrated to Canada from Iceland, their families settling in Lundar and Gimli. After they met
and married, they moved to Winnipeg where Dad started his boat-building business. Putting in nails was our job: As
kids we were small enough to get to the underside of the boat, and it saved Dad lots of time.
We had a dog, Little Joe, who was a brown, short-legged, sausage-shaped dog. Little Joe came to anyone who
paid attention to him. We all loved him, as did the rest of the neighbourhood kids. Little Joe ran around the streets
as though he were a noble, his little head held high, offering an innocent doggy smile to all he met—including
vehicles. We tried to teach him about the dangers of the road, and finally locked him in the yard. However, on one
unforgettable day, Little Joe dug a hole under the fence and squeezed out to visit his friends.
Sometime later, a tearful group of neighbourhood children brought home the sad news that a truck had
seriously injured Little Joe. He now lay down the road awaiting death by a policeman’s bullet, the accepted method
in those days of dealing with injured animals.
We ran to the scene of the accident, where a crowd had gathered around him. Though his eyes were open, he
lay there, unable to move. Tears filled our eyes as Little Joe showed he recognized us with a feeble wag of his tail.
We stood around him, frustrated by our inability to respond to the appeal for help we read in his eyes. And we were
terrified by the pistol of the approaching policeman. He motioned us away from the dog and drew his gun.
Suddenly we became aware of noise. My father was elbowing his way through the circle of onlookers. He
spoke with authority to the young policeman. “Put that thing away! You don’t use a gun around children!”

My aunt needed a dog walker, and I needed the money. I was thirteen.
Every day after school, I ran joyfully over to my aunt’s apartment. After a lot of tail-shaking and wet kissing,
Fetch, a retriever (搜救犬) and I would go for a walk.
On our walks, we’d see the neighbor’s cat, Droopy. He must have known our walking route because he was
always sitting in the window next door, as if waiting for us. Fetch would drag me to the window to frighten the cat
with her loud bark. Droopy would let out hissing (嘶嘶声), hit the dog in his window and escape inside the house.
One day, Droopy was nowhere to be seen. Fetch ran to the window, expecting a good fight as usual, but no cat.
Thankfully, we’d avoid a scene today, I thought. We continued our walk. I found several kids gathered around a
sewer (下水道). Getting closer, I could see Droopy sitting below. Though the kids hanging around the sewer kept
trying to reach him, their arms weren’t long enough, and he kept pulling away in fright. Fetch also saw Droopy and
began to bark at him.
Suddenly, it started to rain hard. In what seemed like a few seconds, I could see Droopy’s little feet almost
covered in water. As a last way, I lay down madly on the sidewalk and stuck my head and arms into the sewer,
reaching for the cat. This frightened him even more, and he pulled farther away.
Meanwhile, Fetch’s barking kept getting louder. When she saw me on the ground reaching into the sewer, I
guess she thought I was in danger. So she went into protective mode, trying to rescue me. Quickly, I pulled myself
out of the hole, but she took my place, pushing her head and half her body into the sewer. I tried to keep her from
falling into the hole. No way was I going to lose the best dog I had ever known.

My wife, Hannah, and I don’t usually keep houseplants. Anything in pots gets either over-watered or under-
watered. But after my diagnosis with glioblastoma, a terminal brain cancer, with a prognosis(预测)of little more
than a year to live, I loved the idea of having something new and green around.
My friend Mitch gave me what he said was a lucky bamboo plant in a deep-green pottery bowl with three
pencil-size stalks(叶柄). We placed the plant in the living room window across from the couch where I spent much
of the day. I smiled when I looked at it over the rim of the mug of coffee Hannah brought me each morning. I told
Hannah I wanted to care for the plant myself. When it didn’t immediately turn yellow or brown or lose all its
leaves, I was pleasantly surprised.
Tending to the plant gave me a sense of accomplishment at a time when I sometimes felt useless. Glioblastoma
limited my ability to walk, and the treatment left me tired, making it hard for me to accomplish everyday tasks. As a
family physician, I was used to being the one who provided care, not the one who received it.
Since my diagnosis in August 2018, far too often, it seemed, I had to rely on help from other people. The
enormous change left me feeling adrift(漂浮的)and unsettled. Watering the plant, as small an act as it was,
connected me to a core part of my old identity and taught me I could still be a caregiver. Plants and people could
still depend on me.
Over the next few months, I recovered from surgery and completed radiation and the first round of
chemotherapy. Even after I returned to work, I continued to care for the plant. Soon, it had nearly doubled in height
and its leaves were shiny and lush. Both the tree and I were thriving.

Jack lived in a small village surrounded by forests and he had always been fascinated by animals and often
spent his free time wandering around the woods, observing them.
One day, while wandering through the forest, Jack chanced upon a group of deer eating grass peacefully in a
clearing (空地). As he approached them, they rushed away, frightened by his presence. Jack felt sad that the
animals were afraid of him, and he decided to change it.
Over the next few weeks, Jack visited the clearing every day, sitting quietly and patiently, observing the deer
from a distance. Slowly but surely, the deer grew accustomed to his presence and started to approach him and allow
him to pet them. Jack was thrilled that he had gained their trust.
Inspired by his success, Jack started to explore the forest more and more, meeting different animals along the
way. He encountered a family of rabbits, a pack of wolves, and even a group of bears. Although he was initially
scared of the bears, he soon realized that they were just as curious about him as he was about them.
Jack started to bring food for the animals, and they started to see him as a friend. He would sit with them for
hours, watching them play and interact with each other. He learned so much about their behavior and habits, and hefelt a deep connection with them.
One day, while he was sitting with the rabbits, Jack heard a loud noise in the bushes. He was afraid that it
might be a predator (捕食者), but to his surprise, a small fox emerged from the bushes. The fox was struggling to
walk, and Jack could see that it was injured.
Without hesitation, Jack approached the fox slowly, trying not to scare it. He saw that the fox had a thorn (刺)
stuck in its paw, and it was in a lot of pain. Jack knew he had to help the fox, but he didn’t want to hurt it further.

One Summer’s day, my Uncle Rick, Isaiah and I went to Police Outpost Lake to fish. I’d learned to fish from
my dad. He’d taught me everything I knew about fishing. Then, he passed away.
“Why do I have to be so quiet?” asked Isaiah.“All those birds are making way more noise than I ever could!”
I ignored him. Pulling back on my rod(杆),I remembered my dad’s words.“Jacob, gently bring your rod back.
Keep the line up high.”Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a few great northern loons( 潜
鸟)gathering together not far from the shoreline. What were they doing there? Maybe it was a family? One loon,
making terrible sounds, swam away from the group, towards me.
My dad had been a fish and wildlife officer. He travelled all over the province, working away from home for
days on end, especially in the spring and fall. When he returned, we sat on the couch together, and he told mestories of life on the road. My dad loved his job, especially the part where he protected nature from humans.
“Isaiah! Come here!”“Now who’s shouting?”“Just get over here. Now!”
The loon stopped in the shallow water near shore. It was so close, and we could see its bright red eyes.
Strangely, the bird’s wings were held tight against its body.
“Look at that beak(鸟喙)!” said Isaiah.“It could easily stab(刺)us to death with that thing!”
Walking into the water, getting closer to the loon, we both saw thin wire wrapped around its neck. Reaching
down, I touched its head, my heart racing. I could see there was a shiny red hook in its body, and fishing line was
wrapped tightly around its neck. Left like this, the loon couldn’t fly or fish or survive. It was asking us to help!
“Go to grab the scissors. I’ll pick it up, and you cut away the line,”I said to Isaiah, who ran away and came
back with the tiny pair of scissors.
