二、读后续写

James Harris Jr. of Glen Burnie, Maryland, and Russ Redhead of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, first met about a
decade ago at The Bank Shot Bar & Grill in Maryland, where they were playing against each other in an
American Poolplayers Association tournament.
At the time, the two were competing for the top prize, an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas, allowing the
winner to compete further in the tournament for a bigger reward.
After losing to Harris, Redhead was upset and took his frustration to Facebook, criticizing Harris in a post
at the time. However, mutual (共有的) friends who had seen the post later defended Harris in the comment
section, urging Redhead to eventually take the post down and apologize to Harris.
“And then I learned over time that Harris is actually a really good guy,” Redhead, 42, told the media, “And,
you know, we went to other tournaments together, we would bet on people together and stuff like that... so we
really started to bond from there.”
Over the years, that bond grew, and the two ended up spending more time with each other and sharing their
passion for pool competitions.
In 2020, Harris, who had been suffering from kidney (肾) disease, was told he had complete kidney failure.
He said the medical staff at the University of Maryland Medical Center immediately wheeled him into surgery so
they could get him on dialysis (透析).
“I didn’t know dialysis means your kidneys are no longer working. So that means you need a transplant —
but they don’t spring all that on you at once,” recalled Harris, now 54, who was later placed on the UMMC
transplant waiting list, with the understanding that he might wait years for a matching donor kidney, according to
the hospital.
Harris’ wife Denise volunteered to become his kidney donor and went through the testing process. But it
turned out that she was a mismatch.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
She then shared her husband’s story in a pool tournament group.

5.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。【来源】湖南省名校联考2024-2025学年高三上学期12月大联考英语试题
A group of eleventh graders entered my classroom, who didn’t seem like the typical excellent U.S. History
students I had expected. At that point, I was fresh out of college with not a bit of teaching experience. I was
grateful to have a job, even if it was in one of the rougher high schools in the city where I lived.
“Good morning,” I said brightly. I was greeted with blank stares. “I’m so excited to have been selected to
teach this honors class,” I continued. “They usually don’t let first-year teachers do that.”
Several of the students sat up straighter and cut their eyes at each other. Oh, well. “We’re going to do things
a little differently in this class because I know that all of you want a challenge.”
By now, every student was staring at me with a puzzled expression.
“First off, let’s rearrange these desks,” I said. “I like lots of class discussion, so let’s put them in a big circle
so we can all see each other’s faces.” Several of the kids rolled their eyes, but they all rose and did as I said.
“Now, everybody choose a seat and let’s play a game. When I point to you, tell me what you hate most about
history.”
Finally, some smiles. And lots more as our game progressed. Students began sharing everything they
disliked about history. Everyone talked. We had just made our way around the circle when the bell rang. Who
knew fifty minutes could pass so quickly?
Armed with the feedback from my students, I began hatching a plan. No teaching straight from the
textbook. No “read the chapter and answer the questions at the end” homework. These kids were bright and
motivated. My honors class deserved to be taught in a way that connected with them.
We’d study social and economic history, not just battles and generals (将军). We’d tie current events into
past events. We’d read novels to help us understand the humanity of history. Tests would cover the facts, but also
require higher level thinking skills.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
At first, I was surprised by how many of my students used poor grammar and lacked writing skills.
