①“Why don’t you want to accept this wonderful opportunity? ”asked the boss on the phone.
② “Shall we leave now?” he whispered to us and we left the room quietly.
③ “Help! Help! I can’t swim,” screamed the frightened boy.④ “Please don’t hurt my cat,” begged Sarah as her brother picked it up by one leg.
⑤ “ I’d like to live in a castle of my own too,” agreed the young prince.
⑥ “ Yes. I bought a car and a new flat this winter,” my father replied.
⑦ “ Are you coming with us?” shouted Li Ming to her friends on the other side of the room.
⑧ “ I didn’t like that meal at all,” complained the customer.
⑨ “ Perhaps you would like to go this way?” suggested the man shyly.
(2) 适当使用with/without这个介词。
①The potential house buyer came with confidence.
②The man answered without hesitation.
③With the lights on, the elderly woman left the room.
④With a book in his arm, he left the room.
⑤With so much work to do, she will have a hard time.
⑥With so much work done, she felt relaxed.
①We thanked the elderly couple and felt a sense of warmth, deeply moved.
②The owner smiled, saying, “ Tell me why you need this house.”
③“May I ask why?” I asked, surprised.
①He gave her the child to hold. Lovingly, she kissed the baby on its forehead with her cold white lips, then
stared wildly around the room, fell back—and died.
②His mother was sleeping when he woke up. Joyfully, he slid out of the room.
①We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Exhausted and hungry, I wondered if we could find our way
back.
②Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Afraid that I might hurt the lovely creature, I
automatically let out a cry to stop my horse.
It is not mony but love that matters.
I want to give it to those who can fill it with love instead of money.

My great-grandmother Eileen is ambitious, determined, loyal, strong and a bit of legend in her own lifetime,
which now reaches 92 years. I should add that we’re not allowed to call her Gran, because she says it makes her
feel old.
That summer, I lost my job and felt hopeless. One day, I paid a visit to her. On my arrival, seeing my low
spirits, she asked me whether I had prepared to get a new start. I just kept silent. Without any more words, she
picked up a box which she placed on the coffee table, saying “You do know what you’re doing with these things,
don’t you?”
It was a new phone. Her current mobile was pretty ancient.
“Yes,” I said.
“Good. That’s why I ask you. You young people know more about such things than us oldies. You can take it
home and get it all set up,” she went on. “Then, when you bring it back, show me how to use my new phone, such
as getting on the Internet, sending e-mails and so on.” She smiled so sweetly. Setting up the phone would be easy,
but teaching her how to use it might be challenging.
The following day I headed back to my great-grandmother’s with the phone. “Here’s your phone. It’s all
ready to use.”
For the next hour, I was busy setting up her passcode (密码) and fingerprint recognition, which she said was
like something out of James Bond.
When I finally got her to swipe (滑动屏幕), she didn’t put the right amount of pressure on and the menu
slipped away. After what seemed like hours, she threw the phone across the room and it landed on the sofa. “Take
it away!” she howled. “I want my old phone back!”
I picked up the phone and was about to leave to give her time to cool down when I realized I didn’t want to
go home when she was angry.

Mrs. Smith was walking home after a long day at work when suddenly she saw her student Miguel in the
street. The boy was sitting on a cardboard box with his homework spread out in front of him.
“Where are your parents?” she asked. She noticed the boy’s eyes well up. “We don’t even have a home,” he
said. “We had lived with relatives who kicked us out a week ago.” He continued to explain that his parents were
now living in a shelter and he didn’t have a desk or table to do his homework. It was also too noisy, so he did it on
a cardboard box in the street. Mrs. Smith promised she’d make arrangements for him to study.
Mrs. Smith arrived at school early the next day and arranged a small desk for Miguel to do his homework in
a room after school. When Mrs. Smith knew Miguel’s mother was deal and his father had no jobs, she told the
school principal about Miguel’s story. The principal was moved and let Miguel’s parents work at the school
cafeteria. Mrs. Smith even provided Miguel and his parents with shelter at her house since they didn’t have a
proper home to live in. For Miguel’s family, Mrs. Smith had turned their lives around. Not only did she help them
stand on their feet, she also gave them a roof over their heads.
Years passed, the 7-year-old Miguel grew up and he graduated from university. Miguel’s parents bought a
department and left Mrs. Smith’s house. Last year, Mrs. Smith’s husband got involved in a false lawsuit (诉讼).
They were on the brink of becoming homeless. Bythen, they had been retired, and their savings wouldn’t allow
them to afford a lawyer. The poor woman was crying in a cafe, when she felt a reassuring tap on her shoulder. It
was Miguel! “Oh, darling!” she shouted, throwing open her arms and embracing him. “How have you been?”
“I’m so good,” he said gratefully. “It’s all because of you. Why are you crying? May I ask if I can help you?”The poor teacher told Miguel everything in tears.

My baby Reese started screaming as we watched my eight-year-old kick and hit while he was tested for his
longing-for black belt. I struggled to hold him in my arms as we pushed our way through the crowd to the side of
the taekwondo (跆拳道) studio.
I looked up, and that’s when I saw it. There was a woman on a flyer with a bright white smile surrounded by
her daughters. “OUR MOM NEEDS A KIDNEY (肾脏),” it said above the photo. “My name is Vonchelle Knight,
and I have kidney disease. I am a single mother of two girls and have been on the transplant waitlist for eight
years,” it said below.
As I continued to read, I was attracted. My eyes couldn’t get to the next word fast enough. My eyes were
filled with tears as I thought about how desperately this mother needed a kidney. And that’s when I felt deep in my
gut, “It’s me. I’m going to be her donor.” In the middle of that busy taekwondo studio, I was called on to donate
my kidney to a woman whom I had never met.
The drive home was not a typical Saturday kind of drive home. I trembled at the thought of speaking aloud
what I was so convinced of just moments before. I glanced over at my husband who was driving.
“Hey, babe?” I asked nervously. “I need to tell you something.”He looked at me, unsure and a little afraid of what might come out of my mouth next. After all, I do like to
keep him on his toes. “Yeah, what is it?” he asked intently.
“I think I want to donate my kidney to a stranger.”

On a cold morning, 79-year-old Donald planned a trip to a supermarket 30 miles away to get some groceries.
It was far to go, but the store had bargain prices(特价), so it was worth the trip. He checked his pockets before he
left. Wallet, house keys, bus token (专用辅币), he was all set.
When he arrived at the bus stop, he saw a young woman standing there. She was holding a baby and trying to
get two kids to behave. “Stop it, Mike!” she cried, rocking the baby. “Stop it, Ricky!”
But the two kids, one looked about four and the other three, just wouldn’t listen. “Here now, boys,” Donald
said. “Mind your momma!” Hearing a strange voice, the boys stopped and stared up at Donald with huge eyes.
“Thank you,” the mother said. “My car broke down, and I have to take the baby to the doctor. But these two are a
handful!’
“Are you new to the neighborhood?” asked Donald. The woman smiled. “Yes! I’m Ellen, and Mark is my husband. We live in the pink house.” Donald smiled
back. “That’s next door to mine! It’s good to have young people moving back into the neighborhood. Children
bring things to life!”
Ellen sighed. “Right now, I’m just tired! My boys are just too lively! I had to rush out of the house this
morning because of them.
Donald laughed. “I remember when my wife and I were young parents. We were tired all the time!”
Suddenly, Ellen started to look nervous. “I can’t find my wallet! Oh, no!”
“Look again,” Donald said kindly. “Sometimes when we are in a rush...”
“It’s not here!” Ellen cried. “What am I going to do? I have to be at the doctor’s in half an hour Please,
Donald, could you lend me the money for the ticket?”
Donald shook his head. “I’m sorry, Ellen, I don’t have any money. I shop with my food stamps at this time of
the month…”
Seeing Ellen look so sad, Donald said, “Take my bus token! The kids don’t have to pay, so it will get you to
town!”
“But what about you?” asked Ellen anxiously.
“Don’t worry,” Donald told her. “I’ll go shopping next week!” Ellen accepted the token and got on the bus,

It was a cold winter. My husband broke up with me. Our 35 years of marriage ended. Shocked, angry, sad
and anxious, I packed up my few things, including flower seeds harvested from our flower bed — I loved flowers
and was quite good at growing them. Carrying the personal belongings, I rented a small house and moved to a
neighborhood where I didn’t know a single person.
The day after I moved in came proof that at least one of my new neighbors was friendly. I found a gift bag
beside my back door. Inside were a square basket (designed for feeding wild birds) and three cakes. The note that
accompanied it said, “I’m Julie. I live in the house right behind yours. I don’t know if you’re a birdwatcher, but
we have lots of them in this neighborhood. Enjoy!”
I hung the basket on a tree branch outside my kitchen window, where some beautiful wild birds found it
within minutes. Suddenly, I felt a little less lost and lonely. That was, until the very next day, when an unexpected
winter storm came in. Ice and snow covered my driveway and the steep (陡峭的) road in front of my house. Tree
branches bent under the weight of the snow, threatening power lines. Temperatures dropped sharply. Although I
knew that pacing the floor and rubbing my hands wouldn’t change anything, I paced and rubbed anyway. Even if
workers from the local traffic department cleared the roads, they wouldn’t clear my driveway. How would I get to
the grocery store? And if the electricity went out, how would I stay warm? I had a fireplace but not a stick of
firewood.
The snow finally stopped falling, but the temperature was still low. While shaking in my front yard one
afternoon, I noticed my across-the-street neighbor clearing his driveway using his shovel (铲子). I introduced
myself and learned that his name was Jerry. “I don’t have a snow shovel,” I said. “May I borrow yours when
you’re finished?”
“Of course,” he told me. “I’ll leave it beside your front door when I’m done.”

Fourteen Steps
They say a cat has nine lives, and I think that possible since I am now living my third life and I’m not even a
cat.
My first life began on a clear, cold day in November, 1904, when I arrived as the sixth of eight children of a
poor farming family. Though struggling to make a living, I started my own family. This was when I started to
enjoy my first life, happy, in excellent health and I became two lovely girls.
Life was a pleasant dream.
Then the dream ended and became one of those horrible nightmares that cause you to wake in a cold sweat in
the middle of the night. I began to suffer from a rare disease of nerves, affecting first my right arm and leg, and
then my other side.
Thus began my second life...
Despite my disease, I still drove to and from work each day. And I managed to keep healthy and optimistic,
to a degree, because of 14 steps.
Crazy? Not at all.
Our home has 14 steps leading up from the garage to the kitchen door. Here hobbled (跛行) a desperate
cripple (瘸子), a man who held on because of 14 miserable steps leading up to the backdoor from his garage.
Then on a dark night, I began my third life. It was raining when I started from home that night and drove on
one of the less-traveled roads. Suddenly one of the tires burst with a bang. I fought the car to a stop.
Then I remembered that a short distance up a little side road was a house. I drove slowly along until I came
to the house. Lighted windows welcomed me as I pulled into the driveway.
The door opened and a little girl stood there. I told her that I had a flat tire and needed someone to change it
for me because I had a crutch (拐杖) and couldn’t do it myself. She went into the house and a moment later came
out, followed by a man who called a cheerful greeting.
I sat there comfortable and dry. The rain seemed to be easing a bit now, and I rolled down the window to
watch.

“Why do you want to be a teacher?” I never explain it without the usual obvious reasons, such as my love of
children or wanting to make a difference. It was not until I met Kathy that I truly knew the reason I wanted to be a
teacher.
I was running a summer program. A seventh grader, a young girl walked through the door and I thought to
myself, “This is going to be a long summer.” She was a student at my school, and I was well aware of who she
was even though I was an eighth teacher. Her reserved place in the principal office was well known by the eight
teachers as we prepared our sales for those students who were going to need extra attention.
I racked my brain (绞尽脑汁) trying to figure out what I was going to do with her. I usually had my older
students act as classroom helpers for the younger grades, so I decided that this would be a good spot for her. Little
did I know how that one little decision would change my life.
Kathy transformed before my eyes. She showed love and patience with the children in that classroom. She
was responsible and caring and she began referring to those students as “her kids”. I witnessed a natural teacher
blooming. I had an unforgettable summer with Kathy.
Soon the school year began and Kathy and I were together again. This time I was her teacher. Kathy
continued to volunteer with “her kids” at my after-school program. Her smile was infectious and her sense of
humor amazing. Before graduation, Kathy thanked every person there for believing in her and giving her a
chance. She was truly grateful. There was not a dry eye on the scene. We continued to keep in touch when Kathy went to high school and then university. Once she sent a letter to
me, thanking me again, for giving her a chance and believing in her. She also stated that she had made her final
decision and she was going to be a teacher! I don’t know I could have felt more pride than I did at that moment.

83-year-old Agatha Stones was a woman who had given birth to four kids. When these kids grew up, they all
moved away from home to start their own lives.
All of Agatha’s kids had become mostly interested in material things but ignored the importance of family.
“Business has been a lot, mom,” the eldest, Brian, would say. Sally, John and Mary were in their late 30s and had
yet to settle down. It hurt Agatha that none of her four kids remembered to visit her or even call her.
One day, she was complaining about it to her friend Sharon. “I just don’t understand why these kids don’t
want to return home to spend time with me,” she said.
“Is that what is eating you?” her friend asked.
“Yes, it is,” Agatha said. “My lawyer has asked me to write my will (遗嘱). I have no idea how I’ll share the
little I have among all four of my kids.”
“I know what you can do to determine that,” Sharon proudly said. And then, she offered Agatha a shocking
plan.
A couple of days later, a piece of news came: Agatha suddenly fell ill and was hospitalized. Despite that,
none of her four kids visited her. A few more days later, all four children received a message stating that their
mom had passed away. Within hours, they all arrived home to discuss how they would share the inheritance (遗产).
Suddenly, a voice cut through the discussion. “Will you guys give all that a rest and focus on what has
brought us all together? The death of our mother!” the youngest daughter, Mary, shouted. There was a brief pause
at her outburst, but as soon as the silence was broken by a phone buzzing, they went on.
Unknown to them, Sharon was listening in on their conversation and, after a few minutes, she walked into
the room, and told them to enter another room to say their final goodbyes to their mother.

It was a bright May afternoon along the Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer, 51, an expert doctor at a
hospital, and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava were were driving with the windows down as they headed home on the
1.4-mile-long, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which stretches across the shallow waters of Assa-woman Bay.
Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the squeal of tires.
Not far ahead of them, a black pickup truck was sliding from one lane to the other. To the Bauers’ horror, it
ran into a concrete barrier, turned over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest hanging over the railing
(栏杆) of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path.
“Ava, are you OK?” he asked after stopping the car. She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt. And then a
scream. It came from the pickup, which had come to rest on its right side. The back passenger compartment (车
厢) and truck bed hung out past the guardrail, 30 or more feet above the waters of the bay. The driver’s door threwopen and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground, and then ran to the railing. Bauer ran up beside him. The
man pointed down, saying something in Spanish. In the water was a car seat. Bobbing (颠簸) next to it was a girl,
about two years old, pink dotted dress, brown hair, brown eyes, terrified, floating on her back, kicking and
splashing and screaming.
From around the truck, more screaming came from its other passengers who had gotten off the truck and
were looking down into the water.
The situation quickly went from bad to frightening when the baby girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer
waited for the pickup driver to do something, but he didn’t move. Maybe he was in shock. “Ava!” Bauer shouted,
bending to remove his shoes. “Stay by the car!”

“Be safe, babe,” I said to my wife, Ashley, holding her tight. She would be on a four-month tour of duty,
flying C-17s in the Middle East. “Good luck with the pup,” she said. A look of concern crossed her face. “You’re
going to need it. I’ll be praying for you.” Ashley was referring to Pistol, the five-year-old golden dog we’d
adopted just 12 hours earlier.
Picking him up from the foster family, Ashley and I watched Pistol crash around the family’s living room,
knocking over furniture and ignoring commands. Finally the family got him on a leash(狗绳) and turned him over
to us. Now I would be alone with him for four months. Most of my life, I had a very clear objective: becoming a
devoted husband and affectionate dad who taught his kids well. So I decided to take this chance to learn how to bea father.
I returned home from seeing Ashley off and opened the front door with trepidation(惶恐). Pistol was in the
living room, scratching. He saw me and rushed over, knocking me against the door. Just as quickly, he rushed
away and crashed around the room. I needed to get this dog outside or he was going to destroy the house. I
grabbed a leash and managed to clip it to his collar. When he realized we were going outside, his tail wagged so
hard that his entire body shook.
When we were out, he behaved crazily, charging at anything moving. Every time he behaved badly, I
corrected him. Not harshly but persistently. And I praised him whenever he did the right thing. To my
astonishment, Pistol caught on. That was it: consistent correction paired with positive reinforcement(加强). I had
