In today’s busy world, lots of people often miss meals. Sometimes they do this on purpose. However, a new
study shows that not having three regular meals a day might have a serious downside.
This study surveyed 24,000 people. About three in ten of them usually ate two meals a day. The findings showed
that younger people, and those with less education were more likely to miss meals. People who missed meals were
also more likely to smoke more, drink more, eat less healthy food, snack more, and take in less energy overall.
Compared to those who ate three meals regularly a day, participants (参与者) who ate one meal daily had a 30%
第4页/共10页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司higher risk of all-cause death and an 83% higher risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease (CVD) death. Those who
ate two meals a day faced a 7% increased risk of all-cause death and a 10% higher risk of CVD death. Specifically,
missing breakfast resulted in a 40% higher CVD death rate compared to those who didn’t. Missing lunch led to a
12% higher all-cause death risk, and not eating dinner brought a 16% higher risk.
Interestingly, even people who ate all three meals but had them too close together faced risks. Eating two meals
within 4.5 hours was also connected with a higher risk of death from all causes. While some think that intermittent

stay healthy.

Art and science may seem totally different. Some people believe that art is about creative ideas, while science
means cold data (数据). However, they actually have a lot in common. A study even showed that art can help students
better remember what they’ve learned in science class.
Mariale Hardiman, an education specialist at Johns Hopkins University, found that students using art in class
listened more carefully, asked more questions, and volunteered more ideas. To prove this, Hardiman teamed up with
some researchers and six local schools.
In the experiment (实验), the researchers worked with teachers in 16 fifth-grade classrooms. They provided both
traditional and art-centered science lessons. In art-centered classes, students might sing the information instead of
just reading it.
The team divided 350 students into two groups. One group started with traditional science classes, while the
other began with art-centered ones. About three weeks later, the students switched (对调). This way, each student
第5页/共10页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司experienced both teaching methods. Every unit was taught in both ways to different groups. This helped researchers
compare how students performed in each type of class.
The results showed that students who started off in traditional classes did better after moving to art-centered
ones. Those who started with art-centered classes continued to do well even when they went back to traditional
classes. These students seemed to use the art skills they’d learned. Teachers also reported that many students kept
singing the songs they learned after finishing the unit. Hardiman said, “The more we hear something, the more we
remember it. Art might help students find creative ways to learn on their own.”
12. What is a common belief about art and science?
A. They can lift our spirits. B. They share a lot in common.
C. They are like opposite things. D. They teach us to be reasonable.
13. What were the students asked to do in the experiment?
A. Lead group discussions. B. Attend two kinds of classes.
C. Give a speech in the lab. D. Pick their favourite teachers.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the experiment?
A. Its process. B. Its change. C. Its importance. D. Its advantage.
15. How do the students probably benefit from art according to Hardiman?
A. Learn about teamwork. B. Forget terrible memories.
C. Improve language skills. D. Develop creative learning.

As the starting gun rang, I found myself among the sea of runners, my heart beating with a mix of excitement
and anxiety. I had trained for months, preparing for the marathon that would test my limits and mark a big step in
my sports journey. The first part of the run went quickly, and I felt good with my pace, breathing in the fresh air
with every step.
However, as the sun climbed higher in the sky, the temperature started to go up, and the run began to make me
tired. My legs felt heavier with each step, and I started to feel sick. Suddenly, I felt myself losing balance. Before I
realized it, I had fallen onto the hot ground.
Everything was spinning (旋转) around me, but I could see someone coming closer. A runner from the pack
(队伍) was at my side. “Are you OK?” he asked with a voice of concern. Without waiting for an answer, he helped
me up to my feet and guided me to the medical aid station.
The doctors quickly checked how I was feeling. They gave me water and a break to ease my thirst and
tiredness from the heat. As I drank water and put cold pads on my head, I started to feel better. The stranger, Alex,
stayed by my side, giving me much comfort.
