In a quiet hillside village near Qingdao, Shandong Province, a group of ordinary villagers has become
famous online by making a special micro-drama with just a smartphone.
Last September, more than 20 villagers from Beiliangjia village got together to film a micro-drama called
Hua Kai Shi Shang, or Blooming on the Rocks. The story is mainly about a young woman who marries into a poor
family with three brothers. With hard work and wisdom, she helps the family get out of trouble and live a better
life. Most parts of the story are based on real village life, and the script (剧本) was finished in only one week.
Ding Zhaoting, the director, shot and edited the whole drama using his mobile phone. More than 80 villagers
volunteered to take part without pay. All the actors were local villagers who had never acted in a drama. Some
hurried to the drama house after farm work, and some stayed up late memorizing lines.
The idea behind the micro-drama was helping the village sell local chestnuts, wild mushrooms and sweet
potatoes. The sudden popularity put Beiliangjia on the map. Viewers flooded online comment sections, asking
where they could buy the produce in the drama. From September to December last year, the village’s income
increased by about 500,000 yuan.
So far, Beiliangjia village has produced six micro-dramas, with a seventh currently in production. The model
of using the productions (作品) to promote rural development is also spreading to more villages across the district.
Nowadays, the area is home to 1,200 film and television companies. It shows that rural stories can touch many
people and support rural development in special ways.

A new Digital Matching Platform (平台) has been started in Kenya. It hopes to connect Kenyan women and
young people with green job chances, and also give them digital skill training and career guidance. The platform
links job hunters directly with employers in important green fields, such as renewable energy, sustainable farming,
waste handling and ecotourism. It’s a necessary way to solve Kenya’s serious youth employment problem — about
one million young people join the job market every year.
Women in Kenya are the group that faces the most difficulties in the green job market. They can’t get the
chances in the new green fields because they can’t get relevant information. They have few social connections and
face unfair job-hiring rules. Many young people, especially women, can’t take the green job chances just because
they don’t know where to begin. The platform will offer them proper training and guidance to make sure the jobs
provided meet the market’s needs and can last for a long time.
Made for mobile phones first, the platform serves users who have little digital access. It provides job hunters
with personalized job notices, skill tests, learning materials and career advice. And for employers, it offers them
tools to choose workers based on their ability and fair recruitment ( 招聘), which can help companies hire more
women and young people in an efficient and fair way.
Thomas Jaeschke, head of a training programme, points out that women’s full participation is the key to
green development. He also argues that the platform not only makes the quality of jobs better, but also encourages
companies to use fair practices for women. By keeping an eye on the results all the time, the platform will make its
services better and spread in more places. It will help more Kenyan women and young people get stable and
meaningful green jobs for a long time.
8.Why is the new platform established?
A.To train people to work on different jobs.
B.To solve the youth’s economic problems.
C.To connect job hunters to working opportunities.
D.To help job hunters contact employers in person.
9.What can be known about the women in Kenya from paragraph 2?
A.They have little green job access.
B.They are treated unfairly in their families.
C.They don’t know where to begin when hired.
D.They have been offered training and guidance.
10.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The benefits for job hunters.
B.The services of the platform.
C.The development of the platform.
D.The requirements for the platform’s users.
11.What do Thomas Jaeschke’s words show in the last paragraph?
A.The platform helps improve job quality.
B.He will keep an eye on the hiring results.
C.Women can be treated fairly in companies.
D.All women should participate in green jobs.
Graphene (石墨烯), a single layer of carbon atoms, is a remarkable material with amazing features: it is
stronger than steel, lighter than aluminum and can conduct electricity better than most materials. Now, scientists
have discovered another superpower of graphene — it can kill germs (细菌) when set off by light. Led by materials
scientist Giacomo Reina from EMPA in Switzerland, a new graphene-based material is being developed to take full
advantage of this special ability.
Discovered 22 years ago, graphene has developed into a “family” of useful materials. Scientists have created
various types of graphene, which can add strength to tennis rackets and improve the performance of electronic
devices. Reina’s team used graphene oxide, a type of graphene with oxygen, and mixed it with water to form an
acid. By blending this acid with a small amount of nitrogen (氮气), they created nitrogen-mixed graphene acid,
which becomes the basis of the germ-killing liquid.
The germ-killing process of this material is a two-step reaction. First, light heats the material up enough to
kill some germs. Second, it causes a chemical reaction between the mixed graphene and oxygen in the air,
producing the liquid that can fight bacteria and viruses. More importantly, the reaction only needs ordinary light to
work, a great advantage compared with traditional anti-germ things. Lab tests show it can kill germs under a kind
of light — present in sunlight and indoor lighting — and it causes no harmful reactions, proving it is safe for the
human body.
The team’s primary goal is to apply this material to treating teeth, as the mouth is a germ-rich area. Most
importantly, it may help fight superbugs — germs that are hard to treat with medicine and cause 1.25 million deaths
every year. This new graphene material thus offers a powerful new tool in the global fight to kill germs.
12.How are the features of graphene mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.By sharing the history of graphene use.
B.By listing some products made of graphene.
C.By looking through previous research findings.
D.By making comparisons with other materials.
13.What does the underlined word “blending” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Heating.
B.Mixing.
C.Decreasing.
D.Removing.
14.What is a key advantage of the new graphene-based material?
A.It kills germs with heat.
B.It is made from pure graphene oxide.
C.It functions with ordinary light.
D.It can wipe out superbugs in the body.
15.What is the best title of the text?
A.A New Way to Treat Dental Problems.
B.A New Material with Amazing Features.
C.A Tool of Producing Germ-Killing Materials.
D.An Effective Solution to Removing Superbugs.
For some people, the relationship with a young relative or neighbour can be very deep. 16 Here
are some best ways to build a good relationship with an unfamiliar young relative or neighbour.
Find things you both like. If you’re struggling to find things to talk about, ask your relative or neighbour
questions about their life to find things you both have in common, from personality features to similar hobbies.
Look for common ground to build your friendship with them. 17
Talk and laugh together as often as possible. Talking to your relatives or neighbors in person can build
your relationship quickly. But if you are too busy to meet them, connect with them on social media sites. You can
try online video chatting. 18 Remember to stay positive and respectful during conversations.
19 Beyond staying in contact, show your relatives or neighbors that you care about their problems
or important dates. Write down birthdays, anniversaries, and important upcoming events so that you send them well
wishes on these dates. If they’re going through a hard time, offer to help them out or suggest solutions to their
problems.
Try to keep your relationship positive. 20 You’ll occasionally have negative emotions or
moments in any chat or interaction. Do your best to handle these situations in a calm and respectful manner and
then move on. Keep your behavior towards your relatives or neighbors respectful, positive, and empathetic (有同感
的) to maintain long-term closeness.
A.Continue to show you care.
B.Be thoughtful about their problems.
C.Family problems can influence your relation.
D.Or send them texts or messages through some apps.
E.Others are more distant with their relatives, though.
F.It’s normal to have ups and downs in any relationship.
G.This will give you a starting point for your interactions.
