Everyone wore masks and fought against the virus.

Shandong.
Known as the birthplace of kites, Weifang in Shandong Province has a long history ofmaking kites. According to local artisans, Weifang kite-making can be dated back to 2,000

grandfather’s workshop.
Having a special connection with kites, Yang learned the technique from her grandfather
at the age of 16. After practicing the technique for 10 years, she started her own shop in 1992.
On Yang’s kites, people can see not only common patterns (花样) like butterflies and
swallows, but some prints telling Chinese legends and history. For example, she ever made a
kite showing a phoenix (凤凰) head lined with portraits (肖像) of 50 famous women in
Chinese history on each side.
Though the idea was cool, the process was not easy.
Yang said that each woman has different characteristics in look, clothes and makeup
style. To create their portraits, she spent much effort and time checking historical records or

Confucius (551-479 BC), one of the most important Chinese philosophers (哲学家),lived during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). After all these years, his influence
is still strong in modern times.

For 17 years, Mohamed Nasar has supported his family of five by fishing in the NileRiver.
But the 58-year-old says fishermen like himself catch fewer fish every year as the Nile
has been filled with plastic bottles, bags and other waste.
“The fish are caught in the bottles, and they die,” said Nasar.
A local environmental group named “VeryNile” has asked the island’s fishermen to use
their boats to collect plastic bottles from the river. VeryNile says it buys the bottles at a higher
price than the market price offered by traders or recycling factories.
The initiative (倡议) provides a solution for helping to clean up the Nile, while
providing a way to make more money for fishermen like Nasar.
“This job has helped us a bit. We come and collect about 10 to 15 kilos of plastic bottles,
and we get about 12 Egyptian pounds for each,” Nasar said when he sat in his boat collecting
bottles.
Nasar, who made about 100 EGP a day after six hours of fishing, can now make another
200 EGP by collecting bottles.
Another fisherman said cleaner Nile water would mean more fish. “On the one hand, the
Nile is cleaner, and on the other hand, the fisherman now has more ways to make money,” he
said.
With the help of more than 40 fishermen, over the past year VeryNile has collected
around 18 tons of plastic bottles, and most of them went to the recycling factory and were
made into new things.

The team says the project could be a major step forward in measuring(测量) the
environmental health of oceans. The scientists are most interested in levels of ocean

the ocean. Ocean acidification can harm or kill some kinds of sea life.
Scientists have connected CO₂ emissions with global(全球) warming caused by human
activities.
In a way, oceans have given humans a helping hand by taking in(吸收) some of the CO₂.
If there were no oceans’ uptake, there would be much more CO₂ in the air. This would trap
more of the sun’s heat and further warm the Earth.
“But the problem now is that the ocean is changing its chemistry because of this uptake,”
said team member Claudine Hauri.
One of the best ways to measure ocean acidification is to collect CO₂ measurements.
Until now, these collections were mostly done from ships or with devices floating at the
