Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the position of student coordinator of the English Club, which I learned about from the notice board last Monday.
Two reasons have led me to apply. To begin with, I have been an active member of the club for two years, and I have taken part in almost every activity it has organised, from the weekly debate to the annual drama night. More importantly, I served as the coordinator of our class reading programme last term, where I was responsible for arranging schedules, contacting speakers and keeping the whole project on track. That experience convinced me that I can handle the duties this position requires.
If I am offered the opportunity, I would work to bring in more first-year students, who often feel that the club is meant only for senior members. I am available for an interview at any time that suits you.
Yours sincerely, Li Hua
Dear Chris,
Delighted to hear that you plan to volunteer in our city for a week, I am writing to share a few suggestions that may help you decide.
First of all, I would recommend the community library near my home, which runs a reading programme for children whose parents work late. What makes it a good choice is that the work is flexible: you can choose morning or afternoon shifts, and the staff are patient with new volunteers. What is more, if you are interested in the environment, the riverside clean-up group meets every Saturday and is always short of hands.
One thing I would suggest you keep in mind is language. Most projects require only basic conversation, but the library does ask volunteers to read aloud, so a little preparation would help. Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to ask.
Yours, Li Hua
Chris:

Dear Mr. Smith,
Our school will hold an exhibition on traditional Chinese festivals next Friday, and it would be a great honour to have you with us.
The exhibition will take place in the school hall from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Students will set up booths for the Spring Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, where visitors can try paper-cutting, make rice dumplings and taste mooncakes. We have also invited a local craftsman to give a short talk on paper-cutting, which I believe would interest you, as you have often mentioned your curiosity about Chinese folk art.
I do hope you can make it. If the time is not convenient, please let me know and we will try to arrange another occasion.
Yours sincerely, Li Hua
Dear Customer Service,
I am writing to complain about a tablet computer I purchased from your online store on 3 March, order number 20240303118.
When the device arrived, it worked properly for about ten days. Then the screen began to flicker whenever it was charged, and twice it shut down in the middle of a lesson my son was taking. I contacted your service team on 15 March and again on 19 March, but apart from an automatic reply I have received nothing.
I would therefore ask you to either replace the device or refund the full amount within seven working days. I have kept the receipt, the original packaging and screenshots of the fault, and I am happy to provide them on request.
I look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully, Li Hua
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Johnson,
I have been back in China for two weeks now, but not a day has passed without my thinking of your kindness during my stay.
What I remember most is how patiently you explained things I did not understand. When I could not follow the dinner conversation, Mrs. Johnson would slow down and rephrase it for me, never once making me feel awkward. Mr. Johnson, your Sunday drives showed me parts of England I would never have found in a guidebook. Thanks to both of you, my spoken English improved more in two months than in the previous two years.
I have enclosed a small album of photographs from those days. Please give my regards to Tom, and tell him I am still practising the card trick he taught me.
With heartfelt thanks, Li Hua
Dear Peter,
I am truly sorry that I failed to return your paper by Sunday as I promised.
On Friday evening my grandmother was taken to hospital, and I spent the whole weekend there with my family. That is no excuse for leaving you without a word, and I should have sent you a message the moment I knew I could not finish.
What I can do now is make it up to you. I have read through the first four pages and marked the places where the argument needs support, and I can go over the rest with you tonight if you are free. I fully understand if you have already asked someone else.
Again, please accept my sincere apologies.
Yours, Li Hua
Peter:
Artificial intelligence has moved from the laboratory into the classroom faster than most teachers expected. Whether this is good news for learning is a question worth taking seriously.
The benefits are real. A student who is stuck on a geometry problem at eleven at night no longer has to wait until morning; a tool that explains the reasoning step by step can turn a frustrating hour into a productive ten minutes. For students in schools where individual attention is scarce, this is not a luxury but a form of equality.
Yet there is a cost that is easy to miss. Learning happens in the struggle, and a tool that removes the struggle also removes the learning. A student who asks for the answer before attempting the question may finish the homework faster and understand less. The risk is not that machines think for us, but that we stop practising the thinking ourselves.
The sensible position, it seems to me, is neither rejection nor reliance. Use such tools to explain what you have already tried, not to replace the trying. A machine can shorten the distance to an answer; only effort can shorten the distance to understanding.
The chart traces the daily after-class reading time of students in a certain middle school between 2019 and 2024. Over these five years, the figure fell steadily from 42 minutes to 23 minutes, a decline of nearly half.
Two factors seem to account for the drop. The first is the screen. Short videos and mobile games are designed to reward attention immediately, while a book asks for patience before it pays anything back; faced with that choice, many students take the easier one. The second is time itself. As homework and after-school classes expanded, reading became what students did only when everything else was finished, which in practice meant never.
The trend is worth worrying about, not because books are noble, but because sustained reading builds the very ability that short videos erode: the capacity to hold a long argument in mind. Reversing the curve may not require more time so much as a fixed, protected half hour, when nothing else is allowed to compete.
