Be Jittery With Imaginary Fears In the Jin Dynasty, there was a very wise man named Le Guang. He loved having friends over. One day, Le Guang invited a friend to his home to drink wine. When his friend took a sip of the wine and was about to put down the cup, he saw a tiny "snake" floating in it. He was so frightened! After going back home, the friend got sick. Le Guang went to visit him and learned that his friend was worried there was a snake in the cup. Le Guang was confused. How could there be a snake in the cup? When Le Guang went home, he took a cup and sat in the same place as his friend. Then he looked around and found a bow hanging on the wall. The bow's shadow in the cup looked just like a snake. Le Guang asked his friend to come again. He let the friend sit in that seat and have a drink. Soon the friend saw the shadow again. Le Guang told him the truth. Knowing it was only the shadow of the bow, the friend felt relaxed at once. His illness went away soon. This is the story of "the snake in the cup", which is the allusion of the idiom Fear the Shadow of a Bow It tells us not to be scared by false illusions. 重点短语(附音标+释义) have friends over /hæv frendz ˈəʊvə(r)/ 邀请朋友来家里做客 take a sip of /teɪk ə sɪp ɒv/ 抿一口…… be about to do sth /bi əˈbaʊt tu duː/ 正要做某事 put down /pʊt daʊn/ 放下 be so frightened /bi səʊ ˈfraɪtnd/ 如此害怕 the same as /ðə seɪm æz/ 和…… 一样 look around /lʊk əˈraʊnd/ 环顾四周 hang on the wall /hæŋ ɒn ðə wɔːl/ 挂在墙上 look just like /lʊk dʒʌst laɪk/ 看起来就像 at once /æt wʌns/ 立刻,马上 go away /ɡəʊ əˈweɪ/ (病痛)消失,痊愈 回答问题 1.
