Ceasefire in Oleshky to Start October 27 After Landmines Cleared

Russia and Ukraine confirmed on October 23 that they will stop fighting in Oleshky, a front-line town in the Kherson region, from October 27. The date is two days earlier than the United States had announced.

Both sides said the ceasefire is meant to open a humanitariancorridor. Aid trucks will enter the town, and residents who want to leave will be taken out first. Before that, workers need to clear landmines from the roads. About 1,700 to 2,000 people remain in Oleshky; most of them are elderly, and around 50 are children.

A US official said the three countries may hold talks within two weeks in Abu Dhabi or Switzerland. Russia said the meeting is planned for early November in Abu Dhabi. Ukraine's president wants the talks to move from officials to leaders, because, he said, the key questions can only be solved at the highest level.

A report on drinking water and health, released in China this week, found that 72% of adults do not reach the recommended daily water intake. Many people take their meals seriously, but they drink water only whenever they feel like it.

That habit costs more than a little thirst. When the body loses less than 1% of its weight in water, memory and attention begin to drop. At 2% to 3%, thinking, body temperature control, the heart and physical performance are all affected. Surveys also show that about 25% of university students and more than 40% of people who exercise often are dehydrated.

The Chinese Nutrition Societyrecommends 1,700 millilitres a day for men and 1,500 for women, and 300 to 500 millilitres extra when people sweat a lot. Experts advise drinking 150 to 200 millilitres each time, every one or two hours, and having 150 to 300 millilitres of warm water within 30 minutes of waking up.

Tsinghua Team's 1-Gram Microscope Records 8,500 Neurons

A team from Tsinghua University, working with a hospital in Beijing, has built the world's lightest mesoscopic microscope. It weighs only 1 gram, about the size of a fingernail, and it can record brain activity without any wires.

In the past, scientists had to fix an animal's head or tie it with cables to see single cells. The new device, called Airscope, offers a 6-mm field of view instead. On one mouse it recorded more than 8,500 neurons at once, about 25 times more than earlier wireless models, and a recording at the same spot lasted over 200 days.

The team also built a large natural habitat for the mice to explore. With five mice wearing the device at the same time, they recorded over 20,000 neurons. In a tube test, a computer model used brain signals to predict which mouse would win with 81.8% accuracy, well above a random guess of 50%.
