第 4页/共 12页There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have a lot of friends at school. However, he wasn’t sure
whether or not his schoolmates were his real friends, so he asked his grandpa for help. The old man told him, “I just
have what you exactly need. Wait a minute here.”
Grandpa left, soon returning as though he was carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing
there.
“Take it. It’s a very special chair. It’s rather tricky to sit on for it’s invisible, but if you take it to school and
manage to sit on it, you’ll be able to tell who your real friends are,” Grandpa said.
Mario was curious to know whether it was true or not, so he took the strange invisible chair and set off for
school. At break time, he asked his classmates to form a circle, and then he put himself inside, with his chair.
“Nobody moves! You’re about to see something amazing.”
Then Mario tried to sit on the chair, but he missed and fell down onto his back. Everyone had a pretty good
laugh about it. Mario wouldn’t be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground …
until he tried again. This time, he didn’t fall over. Instead, he stayed steadily in the mid-air.
Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas and Diana — three of his best friends, holding him up, so
he wouldn’t fall down. Meanwhile, many others he had thought of as friends did nothing but make fun of him,
enjoying his every fall.
Leaving with his three friends, he explained to them how his grandpa had so cleverly thought of a way to show
him that true friends are those who care about us, and not just any people who happens to be passing by. A real
friend would never be someone who takes joy in our misfortunes.
4. Why did Mario turn to his grandpa for help?
A. Because he didn’t like his school.
B. Because he couldn’t make any friends.
C. Because he didn’t get along with his schoolmates.
D. Because he couldn’t find out who his true friends were.
5. Why was Mario able to stay in the mid-air?
A. Because he managed to sit on the invisible chair finally.
B. Because his three friends held him up with their hands.
C. Because his classmates gave him a chair to sit on.
D. Because he could see the magic chair clearly.
第 5页/共 12页·
6 Who are real friends according to the text?
A. Those who laugh with us.
B. Those who take joy in our misfortunes.
C. Those who care about us when we are in trouble.
D. Those who care for us when we are popular at school.
7 How did Mario most probably feel at the end of the text?
A. Happy. B. Stressed. C. Confused. D. Uncomfortable.
C
In today’s fast-paced world, finding moments of peace can be a challenge, especially for students burdened
with homework and exams. Interestingly, a simple and natural solution might be sitting right on your desk —
indoor plants.
Studies have shown that being around plants can reduce stress and anxiety. Interacting with plants, even just
by looking at them, can lower blood pressure and promote a feeling of well-being. This is particularly beneficial in
high-stress environments like schools.
Moreover, plants can improve concentration and productivity. Research conducted in classrooms and offices
found that having plants around can increase attention spans and improve memory recall. This means your potted
friend might just be the silent study partner you need to help you get through your next study session.
Plants also help to purify the air. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, and some can even remove
harmful chemicals from the air, creating a healthier environment for learning and thinking.
You don’t need a green thumb to enjoy these benefits. Start with easy-to-care-for plants like snake plants or
peace lilies. Water them occasionally, give them some light, and they will thrive. Bringing a bit of nature indoors
might be a small step, but it can make a significant difference to your mental health and academic performance.
8. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Students face great stress from study.
B. Indoor plants can improve learning conditions.
C. Some plants are easy to care for.
D. Air quality in classrooms is poor.
9. How do plants help students according to the passage?
A. By making classrooms more beautiful.
第 6页/共 12页B. By absorbing noise in the classroom.
C. By providing fresh fruits for students.
D. By helping students focus and remember better.
10. What does the phrase “a green thumb” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A A natural talent for gardening.
B. A hand that is painted green.
C. A lot of money.
D. A special kind of plant.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce the history of plant studies.
B. To encourage students to keep indoor plants.
C. To explain the process of plant photosynthesis.
D. To describe different types of indoor plants.

To know parents ’ influence on students ’ learning, researchers studied 438 kids and their parents. Before a
school year started, the researchers asked parents to write down how anxious they would feel in different situations
connected with math like planning their money spending or checking their house’s size. They also checked their
children’s math ability and math anxiety in a school year.
The study found kids whose parents were anxious about math learned less math over the school year. And
these kids didn’t perform as well on the tests as those who hadn’t been exposed to math anxiety. Besides, these kids
also were more likely to become nervous about math themselves. But these kids only “ caught ” that anxiety if their
parents had often tried to help with their homework. This is an example of good intentions having a bad result.
The study’s result appeared in Psychological Science. Erin Maloney led the study. As someone who has
personally experienced math anxiety, she says, “ I was always very nervous about math, not only taking tests but
also learning the new concepts. So I really tried to balk at math, including finding excuses to miss math tests and
not wanting to do math homework. ” It was only after she saw how math could be applied to her passion that she
started to enjoy math.
Parents with math anxiety should still support their kids as the kids work on math homework, though. But they
should know helping kids with schoolwork requires more than just going over facts and concepts. Parents should
第 7页/共 12页help kids look for ways to have fun with math, like playing math-based games. When kids have difficulty in
learning, encourage them to bravely face it but don’t make them nervous.
What can students do if they’re already nervous about math? Maloney says, “ My earlier study showed that
students who wrote about their fears of math for 7 to 10 minutes before taking a math test performed better on that
test. After the writing process ,many students said their fears weren’t such a big deal. ”
12. The 438 kids ’ parents were asked to present ______ .
A. their attitudes to school education B. their opinions on kids ’ math ability
C. their ways to solve kids ’ math anxiety D. their math anxiety levels in their daily life
13. What result did Maloney’s team report in Psychological Science?
A. Kids are more likely to be afraid of math.
B. Some parents pay little attention to their kids ’ study.
C. Kids can pick up negative thoughts about math from their parents.
D. Parents should help with their kids’ homework as little as possible.
14. What does the underlined phrase “ balk at ” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Enjoy. B. Avoid. C. Learn. D. Understand.
15. What advice would Maloney probably give to students on their math anxiety?
A. Working closely with their math teachers.
B. Seeking help during their learning process.
C. Sparing some time to go over their notes daily.
D. Removing math anxiety by admitting it to themselves.

There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have a lot of friends at school.
第 5页/共 23页Then Mario tried to sit on the chair, but he missed and fell down onto his back.
6. Who are real friends according to the text?
A. Those who laugh with us.
B. Those who take joy in our misfortunes.
C. Those who care about us when we are in trouble.
D. Those who care for us when we are popular at school.
7. How did Mario most probably feel at the end of the text?
A. Happy. B. Stressed. C. Confused. D. Uncomfortable.

As someone who has
personally experienced math anxiety, she says, “ I was always very nervous about math, not only taking tests but
第 9页/共 23页also learning the new concepts.
Parents should
help kids look for ways to have fun with math, like playing math-based games.
