It was 11:30 a.m., and fishing on the water 40 miles off the North Carolina coast was a great

way to spend a lazy July day. Calm seas, clear skies, hint of a breeze. Not another boat in sight.
Until now. Andrew Sherman, 50, spotted a speck(小点) on the horizon. As the speck approached,
it started to look like a boat. However, there wasn’t a soul in sight.
“Hey! Hey!” Andrew and his son, 21, shouted. Nothing. A horrifying thought took shape: The
captain had gone below, all right—and suffered a heart attack.

Andrew called the Coast Guard. The Andrews could have left it at that, but they were curious:
What happened to the captain? Locating the boat’s GPS system, they found the missing captain had
marked points along his route showing good fishing spots. Then the points suddenly stopped a few
miles back.
They headed for that last point with the two boats. From there, they made ever-enlarging circles
for the next hour.
Two hours earlier, Sascha Scheller, Captain of the boat, had been fishing for mahi-mahi when
he wanted to rest. He leaned over the boat side but slipped. Suddenly he was in the water. He grabbed
wildly for the swim ladder, but it slipped between his fingers. In dumbstruck(目瞪口呆的) horror he
watched his boat zoom off, taking his life jacket with it.
His only hope was to swim three miles back to where he’d last seen other boats. Suddenly,
Scheller spotted boats in the distance. Only when one close up to him did it dawn on Scheller: “That’s
my boat!”
That evening, when he got home, Andrew’s wife asked him how his day had gone. “It was a
slow day catching fish,” he told her. “But we did catch a man.”

A famous American poet Robert Frost once said, “Poetry is what gets lost in translation. ”But
XuYuanchong, a well-known Chinese translator, had tried to convey the beauty of ancient Chinese
poetry throughout his life. His teacher Qian Zhongshu commented on his poetry translation, “You are
dancing while chained by rhyme and rhythm, but the dance shows amazing freedom and beauty,
which is quite impressive.”
Since 1978, Xu had published more than 100 translated works in Chinese, English and French,
reaching millions of readers at home and abroad. Most notably, he translated Chinese poems into
rhymed verses in both English and French. He was also the first Asian winner of the Aurora Borealis
Prize for Outstanding Translation of Fiction Literature.
Xu was known to be very fastidious in his work. For him, English is a “scientific” language that
needs exactness while Chinese is an “artistic” language that includes a wider range of content.
Following this principle, Xu kept not only faithfulness in meaning but beauty in emotion in his
translation.
Through Xu’s translations, time-honored Chinese wisdom has made an impact on Western
societies and the world. For example, when former US president Barack Obama tried to begin a
healthcare project during his presidency, some senators disagreed at first. But after reading the poem
titled Fishing in Snow translated by Xu, one senator was so impressed with the fisherman’s
independent thinking that he chose to support Obama.
Having made such great achievements, Xu maintained a routine. Every day he translated about
1, 000 words, working till 3 to 4 a. m., sleeping for about 3 hours and getting up at 6 a. m. to continue.
“Translation is a means of communicating with the writer’s soul. A sudden flicker of a good word or
a good line thrills every pore (毛孔) and every inch of my skin.” Xu said.

Cars produced today are essentially smartphones with wheels. For drivers, this has meant many
new features: automatic braking (刹车), turn-by-turn directions, entertainment systems. But
carmakers are getting much more. They’re constantly collecting data from our vehicles, like how
much we weigh, how fast we drive, how many children we have and even financial information. But
who owns and, finally, controls that data? And what are carmakers doing with it?
The issue of ownership is not clearly known. Drivers usually sign away their rights to data. It’s
not unlike buying a smartphone. The difference is that most customers have no idea vehicles collect
data. We know our smartphones collect data and we accept that we trade personal information for
convenience. With cars, we have no such expectation.
What carmakers are doing with the collected data isn’t clear. We know they use it to improve car
performance and safety. And we know they have the ability to sell it to third parties they might choose.
The data on your driving habits could be valuable to insurance companies. You may or may not choose
to share your data with these services. But while you can turn off location data on your cellphone,
there is no opt-out (退出权) feature for your car.
Carmakers use data to warn us when something needs repair or when our cars need to be taken
in for service. For almost a century, car owners have been able to take their vehicles to whichever
shop they trust for repair. That may be changing. When carmakers control the data, they can choose
which service centers receive our information. They are more likely to share our data only with their
branded dealerships (经销商) than with independent repair shops which could have advantage in
price and convenience.
It’s clear, because of its value — as high as $750 billion by 2030 — carmakers are unlikely to
release control of the data collected from our vehicles. Lawmakers, however, have the opportunity to
give drivers control—not just so that they can keep their data private but also so that they can share
it with the people they want to see it. This will let car owners maintain what they’ve had for a century:
the right to decide who fixes their car.
