Elizabeth Keyton, originally from Georgia, the USA, married Arjun, a Malayali. She wanted to learn his
mother tongue to strengthen their family bond. In the process, she created an Instagram page called “Elikutty”
through which she now teaches Malayalam to thousands of people.
“I always loved hearing people speak different languages, but when my mother from Serbia spoke Serbian at
home, my father showed no interest in learning it, leaving frequent misunderstanding and communicating
problems. That’s when I decided that if I met someone from a different culture, I would try to learn his language,
which would be good for us and our family,” says Elizabeth to The Better India.“So when my relationship with Arjun started looking serious because of difficulties in communicating, I
decided to learn Malayalam. However, I found that there weren’t enough resources to learn the language. Most
books available were outdated or made for children. A small amount of material was often too difficult for casual
(非正式的) language learners like me,” says the 35-year-old. “Later, I struggled to find a teacher suited to my
needs and some grammar resources online.”
As an English teacher, Elizabeth used her teaching skills to learn Malayalam. She wrote notes and made
doodles (涂鸦) to learn the letters. “For me, the best way to learn is by explaining it to someone else, so I made an
Instagram page in 2018 to share my notes and small drawings,” she says. Starting out with 1,000 followers in 2018,
her Instagram page has over 70,000 followers today. She is pleased to make learning Malayalam fun and easy.
“I have seen what happens when languages are ignored in my own house. My brother doesn’t know Serbian,
which means his family won’t. It’s important to know English as it is a global language and helps when you go
abroad, but the same respect should be given to native languages. They are the true way to a person’s heart.” says
Elizabeth.
4. Why did Elizabeth decide to learn Malayalam?
A. To build a foundation for her career.
B. To improve her relationship with Arjun.
C. To better communicate with her mother.
D. To satisfy her interest in foreign languages.
5. What difficulty did Elizabeth meet during her learning?
A. Rejection from her husband. B. Failure to find a native partner.
C. Lack of suitable learning resources. D. Inability to find a professional teacher.
.
6 What was Elizabeth’s Instagram. page used to do at first?
A. Collect learning tips. B. Assist her in self-study.
C. Practice small drawings. D. Teach others Malayalam.
7. What is Elizabeth’s opinion on language learning?
A. Using social media as the primary tool.
B. Respecting our inner thinking at all times.
C. Always putting the family’s common language first.
D. Treating official languages and mother tongues equally.
B 5. C 6. B 7. D

In the summer of 2021, wildfires caused a disaster on an Italian island, burning over 69,000 acres of land and
displacing thousands. The Montiferru region, badly affected by the fires, is testing out a new warning system for
wildfires, developed by a German company called Dryad.
Due to climate change, the number of extreme wildfire events is expected to increase up to 14% by 2030.
Apart from billions of dollars of damage they cause, the chemicals they produce are strong pollutants and in 2023,
wildfires gave out a record 1.76 billion metric tons of carbon in the atmosphere — equal to more than double
Germany’s yearly CO₂ emissions.Existing early warning systems are based on the visual detection of smoke, either through satellite imaging,
cameras on the ground or human observers. “But these systems are too dilatory. In order to generate smoke that
can be seen from a distance of, say, 10 to 20 miles, the fire has to be very big—you might already have half a
football field on fire underneath. Then, if you add the time for firefighters to arrive at the scene, it may have
become too big to be put out at all,” said Dryad’s co-founder and CEO, Carsten Brinkschulte.
Dryad aims to reduce the detection time of wildfires and catch them early. To do so, the company has designed
a solar-powered sensor fitted with a gas detector. “It can detect hydrogen, carbon monoxide, etc. Think of it like an
electronic nose that you attach to a tree,” says Brinkschulte. Once the sensor detects a fire, it sends out a signal
which is then sent to the Internet by satellite and 4G. Finally, what the forest managers get is an alarm with the
exact GPS location of the sensor that picked up the fire.
So far, Dryad has tested 300 sensors across Europe and plans to make 230,000 units next year. “Our goal is to
set up 120 million of them by 2030, which would be able to save 3. 9 million hectares of forest from burning and
prevent 1.7 billion metric tons of CO, from reaching the atmosphere,” says Brinkschulte.
8. What do the facts mentioned in Paragraph 2 mainly show?
A. The danger of wildfire pollutants. B. The climate change over the years.
C. The environmental stress from wildfires. D. The problem of CO emissions in Europe.
2
9. What does the underlined word “dilatory” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Slow. B. Distant. C. Wasteful. D. Expensive.
10. How does the new warning system operate?
A. By putting out the fire directly in its early stages.
B. By smelling the fire and reporting its location.
.
C By forecasting the weather to prevent the fire.
D. By going around the forest to check the fire.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The system has great possibilities for use.
B. Europe especially suffers from wildfires.
C. The system needs further improvement.
D. Climate change will deepen wildfires.
C 9. A 10. B 11. A

Due to climate change, the number of extreme wildfire events is expected to increase
up to 14% by 2030. Apart from billions of dollars of damage they cause, the chemicals they produce are strong
pollutants and in 2023, wildfires gave out a record1.76 billion metric tons of carbon in the atmosphere — equal to
more than double Germany’s yearly CO₂ emissions.(由于气候变化,预计到2030年,极端野火事件的数量将
But these systems are too dilatory. In order to generate smoke that can be
seen from a distance of, say, 10 to 20 miles, the fire has to be very big — you might already have half a football
Then, if you add the time for firefighters to
arrive at the scene, it may have become too big to be put out at all,
故选A项。
Dryad aims to reduce the detection time of wildfires and catch them early. To do so,
the company has designed a solar-powered sensor fitted with a gas detector. ‘It can detect hydrogen, carbon
monoxide, etc. Think of it like an electronic nose that you attach to a tree,’ says Brinkschulte. Once the sensor
detects a fire, it sends out a signal which is then sent to the Internet by satellite and 4G. Finally, what the forest
managers get is an alarm with the exact GPS location of the sensor that picked up the fire.(Dryad的目标是减少森
So far, Dryad has tested 300 sensors across Europe and plans to make 230,000
units next year. ‘Our goal is to set up 120 million of them by 2030, which would be able to save 3. 9 million
hectares of forest from burning and prevent 1.7 billion metric tons of CO, from reaching the atmosphere,’ says
故选A项。

Robot bees, or mechanical bees, are machines designed to do the work of actual bees, like pollinating (给……
授粉) plants, as well as monitoring the health of bee houses. ___16___ And as expected, many robot bee projects
have been successful so far.
One of the advantages of robot bees is that they are more productive than real bees. Farmers using robot bees
can yield about 20 to 40 percent more crops than if they use commercial honey bees. Meanwhile, these robots are
good at collecting and analyzing critical crop data along the way. ___17___ In this sense, robot bees have the
potential to achieve a big economic impact.
Robot bees can also act as wild pollinators in greenhouses, without requiring that the whole greenhouse be
opened up to the actual wild. ___18___ These are closely monitored environments, so there is no need for
pesticides (杀虫剂), offering robot bees a promising prospect as they are more se cure for food quality.
___19___ Unless they are given accurate commands to do it, robot bees likely won’t pollinate things like
wildflowers the way bees do. As the whole food web is secured by having bees pollinate wildflowers, if you were
to replace those bees, then the wildflower communities would start to break down, which would then impact other
species like birds.
And yet, we may not have much of a choice. The global population is expected to grow by 25 percent to about
10 billion people by 2050. To meet the demand, food production will need to increase greatly. So will the number
of honey bees, which are already facing their own unique challenges in the face of habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change. ___20___
A. There is still a long way for robot bees to go.
B. This enables growers to make better farming decisions.
C. We may need the help of robot bees to ensure our survival.
D. But the ways they are used are not environmentally friendly.
,
E. However robot bees could affect the given area’s biodiversity.
F. They are used to increase productivity in the agriculture industry.
G. That matters as greenhouses are becoming more popular than outdoor farms.
F 17. B 18. G 19. E 20. C

I clearly remember the day I went to school with a big change—my very first pair of eye glasses. I was filled
with excitement, eager to show them off to my classmates. I had chosen a pair of pink-framed glasses, thinking they
would look fantastic on me. Little did I know that I would become the object of ridicule (嘲笑).
The reason behind getting the glasses was my poor eyesight. My teacher had repeatedly criticized me for not
completing my work accurately. Sitting at the back of the class, I couldn’t copy words and proper grammar from
the blackboard because everything was too blurry (模糊的) for me to see. More often than not, my deskmate would
read every phrase aloud to me so that I could write them down, like a parrot.
Wearing those glasses was like stepping into a 3D cinematic world: I could see everything clearly. However,
on the day I wore my glasses to school, all the boys laughed and I could see them hiding their faces with hurtful
smiles. Several girls kindly told me that my glasses looked good on me, but I knew they were all telling white lies.
Nevertheless,I needed the glasses more than I wanted them.
A month passed, but my classmates still weren’t used to seeing me wear glasses. Insecurity led me to take
them off during lunch break or after class. I admitted that I had started to hate my glasses, but little did I know that
my decision to wear them would change the life of one of my friends.
On a Monday morning, my friend Jane came to me, looking at me with curiosity. When I asked what got her
so interested, she pointed to my glasses and said she wanted to try them on. Without hesitation, I handed my glasses
to her. As she put them on, her mouth dropped open in surprise.
注意:
Puzzled, I asked her what was so surprising.

____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________________
Puzzled, I asked her what was so surprising. She told me that everything seemed so clear and she could
see the blackboard without any difficulty. “But you’ve always been able to see the blackboard”, I said. Jane shook
her head and replied, “No, I couldn’t. But I didn’t want to say anything because it made me feel less cool.” I felt sorry
for her and offered to lend her my glasses whenever she needed them. However, she thanked me and said that her
parents would buy her a pair.
The following week, I was amazed to see Jane wearing a pair of glasses too. It was then that I realized that we
had both been afraid of being different and not cool enough. Now, however, we were happy to be able to see things
clearly. We even went to the eye doctor together to get our eyes checked. From this experience, I learned that if you
are ever faced with a problem, don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice.
