As for long-distance travel, there are some wonderful destinations that actually
offer you great value for your money, especially for those who do not hope to empty
their pockets after a holiday.Tokyo, Japan
Food lovers should go to this busy city which has the lowest cost of eating out —
you can even buy two evening meals (three dishes for each), with a bottle of wine, for
just under £34. For sightseeing there are plenty of free museums and attractions,
while tour bus ticket prices start from as little as £11.56.
Bangkok, Thailand
Thailand’s capital is second to none as the best value long-distance city. Although
there isn’t a big difference in all prices compared to the other cities, it is
accommodation that really makes it stand out. If you’re only stopping for a long
weekend, then be sure to pay a visit to the breathtaking temples.
Beijing, China
The Chinese capital stands out with the total price of £337.49. If you only have
one cultural day out during your stay, make it a trip to the Forbidden City. There are
some beautiful buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. At the same time they’re
home to priceless artificial objects from ancient Chinese emperors’ families.
Dubai, UAE
Although Dubai does have a reputation(名声)for being quite the splurge(挥
霍)when it comes to holidays and if you’re going to enjoy shopping or experience
the roller-coasters, it is in fact quite worth the money. The city also offers some
cheaper prices across its museums, galleries and attractions as well as airport
transfers.
21. What can you enjoy in Tokyo, Japan?
A. Free bus rides. B. Eating out cheap.
C. Visiting galleries free. D. Priceless man-made objects.
22. Which one tops the list of the best value long-distance cities?
A. Tokyo. B. Beijing. C. Dubai. D. Bangkok.
23. What is people’s common idea about Dubai?
A. Dubai is not a good place for shopping.
B. Being on vacation in Dubai costs tons of money.
C. Historical buildings spread everywhere in Dubai.D. The roller-coasters there are the best in the world.

Max reads more than anyone he knows. He loves to read during all of his free
time. His friends make fun of him because he would prefer reading to playing
video games, but his parents and his teachers are proud of him. They say reading is
important, and it will help him learn about the world around him. They also tell him it
is a good habit.
One day Max was reading a magazine article about volcanoes(火山). He told
his friends all about volcanoes and what causes them to erupt. The very next week,
the teacher started a science project about volcanoes. Guess who everyone wanted in
their project group! Max’s friends weren’t laughing at him anymore.
Max ended up being in a group with Liz, Anna and Josh. The work was to create
a poster board with information about volcanoes and to build a volcano model. Max
made copies of the magazine article about volcanoes so his project partners could read
about them too. They also went to the library to look for more information about
volcanoes.
The group met at Anna’s house that night to organize the information and decide
what they wanted to put on the poster board. They all asked Max what he thought was
most important. Then they decided together to do what Max said. The next night they
met at Josh’s house to build their volcano. They used cardboard and modeling clay.
First they made a volcano shape with the cardboard, and then they covered the shape
in brown and red clay.
The volcano looked great. Max, Liz, Anna and Josh were very proud of their
hard work. When they turned in their project, their teacher was proud too. Thanks to
Max’s good habit they came an A+ on both parts of the project.
24. Why do Max’s friends laugh at him?

volcanoes.

There exist cruel wars, fighting and sadness in the world today, so it’s not only
necessary, but also important to have a good sense of humour just to help us go
through difficult times in our lives. Putting a smile on someone’s face when you know
they are feeling depressed, as the saying goes, makes me feel good and warms my
heart.
How would you feel if you could not joke around with wife, husband, child, co-
worker, neighbor, close friend, or even just someone that you are standing in line with
at your corner store? I am always saying things that make others smile or laugh, even
if I don’t know the person I’m joking around with. My Grandma always found
humour in everything she did, even if it was the hardest job anyone could imagine.
This not only relieves stress in any situation, but also is a common manner to speak to
others that are around you.
I know of a few people that don’t have a funny bone in their bodies, as they say.
Everyone around them could be rolling on the floor after hearing a great joke and they
would sit there without the slightest smile on their faces. They don’t get the joke that
makes others laugh. I am busting a gut while they just sit there, looking at me as if I
were from outer space. How can people not get a really funny joke?
Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humour,
we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of
medications to keep us from going crazy. There is too much sadness and a little lightin our lives.
Therefore, I believe our best medicine is to get together and tell some jokes and
have some fun laughing together.
28.According to the passage, why is humour necessary and important?
A.It can lift people’s spirits.
B.It makes people more confident.
C.It can help people get on well with others.
D.It can help get rid of the cruelty in the world.
29. What does the underlined phrase “busting a gut” in the third paragraph mean?
A.Keeping silent. B.Speaking loud.
C.Laughing hard. D.Explaining carefully.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards the present world?
A.Disappointed. B.Content. C.Confident. D.Confused.
31.In writing the passage, what does the author mainly intend to do?
A.To talk about his own understanding of humour.
B.To encourage people to be humorous in daily life.
C.To convince people of the power of being optimistic.
D.To introduce a practical way to get through daily life.
D
When people think about improving their physical fitness, they often neglect
(忽视)balance. Good balance is a necessary part of being physically fit and key to
living a long life, according to research. It’s important for everyone, no matter your
age.
Older adults are most affected by poor balance. Falls are the leading cause of
injury and death for those 65 and older, with nearly 30% in this age group reporting at
least one fall in 2023, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention. But younger adults frequently fall down, too.
Forty-eight percent of young adults reported falling at least once during one 16-
week study. The falls most commonly happened during sports activities, with women
in the study reporting more falls and fall-related injuries than men.Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages
20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health. That number
compared with 21% of middle-aged adults (46 to 65) reporting falls and 35% of those
over 65. While falls among young adults were often connected with sports, falls by
the middle-aged group were typically related to health problems and physical
changes.
Many factors can affect your balance outside of age, such as vision changes,
brain injuries, overweight and a general lack of physical fitness. Even if you have no
risk factors, simply neglecting to work regularly(有规律地)on your balance will
result in increased instability(不稳定性).
“Our body is conditioned to lose what we don’t regularly use and practice, and
balance is no different,” said Susan Baxter.
32. What role does a good balance play in our lives?
A. It enables us to build a perfect shape.
B. It protects us from getting seriously sick.
C. It helps us live a healthy and long life.
D. It has the power to make us look young.
33. How does the author show the research results?
A. By having a discussion. B. By following the time order.
C. By raising questions. D. By listing numbers.
34. In which situation are young adults likely to fall down?
A. When joining in a sport. B. When working regularly.
C. When a physical change appears. D. When a health problem comes up.
35. What can we learn from what Susan Baxter said?
A. We are naturally born with balance.
B. We should manage our body properly.
C. Our body is used to working in its own way.
D. We’ll lose our balance if we don’t practise it often.
第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项
中有两项为多余选项。Sometimes, we meet with situations that cause us to feel angry to the point we
may want to erupt(喷发)like a volcano or curse(咒骂)someone out. 36
Here are some replies online to the question about how to deal with anger.
Go for a swim, lift weights, and practice other forms of exercise!
Science suggests that hearing, seeing, or swimming causes our brain to produce
neurochemicals that increase blood flow to the brain and heart. “ 37 I like to
lift weights. It completely takes the edge off. Heavy bag work is good for cardio and
reducing anger. Yoga is great for both exercise and meditation,” wrote u/JackFunk.
Eat a healthier diet.
Proteins such as fish, tofu, and chicken, help us produce higher levels of
dopamine and norepinephrine, which are chemicals in the brain that play a role in
your mood, motivation, and concentration. “I found that some foods messed with my
stomach. 38 Over time I have removed various foods from my diet, and it
has really helped,” u/JackFunk also wrote.
Write your feelings down.
Whether it’s quick sentences or journal entries, writing down how you feel is a
great way to release(发泄)negative emotions. “ 39 Pour your heart out…
and if you’re worried that someone else may read it later, you can burn it to release
the energy,” wrote u/ChoiceFabulous.
40
“If you have trouble not getting angry when discussing something or trying to
work through a problem with someone, always imagine the conversation is being
videotaped. If you keep that in the back of your mind, you will always think about
what you say, and it could help keep your mind from the anger,” wrote
u/therealtidbits.
A.For me, nothing is better than exercise.
B.Whenever I can’t help getting angry, I read.
C.Pretend that when you get angry people are watching.
D.Whenever I can’t exercise or burn out the feelings, I write.
E.Anyway, there are always better ways to handle when angry.
F.They then messed with my head, which brought out the anger.
G.Pretend there is a camera before you and be mindful of what you say.

W: Today I’ll talk about Wally Amos, the founder of the Famous Amos Cookie.
Actually, ⑰he started out as an agent at the William Morris Agency who used
home-baked chocolate chip cookies as his way to get noticed. After a while, some
of his business partners encouraged him to sell the cookies. ⑱They even gave
money to the Famous Amos Cookie, which he started in 1975. And its sales hit
$12 million seven years after its founding. His cookies were a success, but ⑲he
wasn’t a good manager and his company started losing money, so he had to
bring in new money. From 1985 to 1988, he went through four different co-
owners. ⑳By the time the Shanby Group bought it in 1988, Amos had nothing
left. And then he started a new company called “Wally Amos Presents: Chip andCookie” four years later, but the Famous Amos Cookie brought a case against him
because of the company’s name. Finally, he agreed not to use his own name or
image on the cookies. He then moved to Hawaii and started another cookie
company called “Uncle Noname Cookie.” That’s all for today. Thank you for
listening.
