George C. Hale served as the Chief of the Kansas City Fire Department for 31 years. At the end of the 19th
century, he enhanced firefighting with his 60 patented inventions, including the Hale Water Tower and the
telephone fire alarm, and helped bring America's fire departments into the modern era.
In Kansas' early history, fires were common with most homes built of wood and heated with coal. Every
second mattered for the crews tasked with putting them out. Hale was a mechanical genius, solving the problems
firefighters faced in his era.
Teams of trained horses were used to transport equipment to and from fires from 1860 to 1927.
Harnessing(上挽具) the horses was a time-consuming business until Hale invented the swinging
horse harness. The harness was suspended(悬挂) from the ceiling of the fire station. When the alarm
sounded, the horses moved into place and the harness broke open and dropped into position, making them spring
into action with lightning speed.
Hale trained his team to make certain every moment counted. Demonstrations of their record -speed
harnessing were so successful that major cities demanded to see the Kansas City firefighters in action. The team
was even invited to represent the United States as the “American Fire Team” at the International Fire Congress in
London in 1893 for an audience with Queen Victoria.
Passionate about seeking new approaches to upgrading firefighting, Hale made numerous inventions,
improving firefighters' work efficiency. He even hired a circus gymnast to teach firefighters physical fitness. His
novel ideas dramatically changed the whole fire service.
Although Hale was fired owing to his political conflict with the authority in 1902, he didn't quit his
commitment to firefighting. He actively advised departments around the country and sold fire control facilities as
far away as Russia. When he died in 1923, the Kansas City Journal called him “one of the greatest fire chiefs in
the history of modern firefighting”.
24.What was the advantage of George C. Hale's swinging harness?
A.It allowed horses to run faster. B.It reduced response time to fire.
C.It protected firefighters from hurt. D.It simplified the process of firefighting.
25.Why does the author mention the International Fire Congress?
A.To indicate the excellence of Hale's team.
B.To compare diverse firefighting techniques.
C.To evaluate the role of the international stage.
D.To convince people of America's efforts in firefighting.
26.Which of the following can best describe George C. Hale?
A.Creative and committed. B.Ambitious and responsible.
C.Brave and generous. D.Unselfish and optimistic.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Honors of the Kansas City Fire Department
B.Development of Kansas' Firefighting Cause
C.George C. Hale: a Witness to the Fire Service
D.George C. Hale: a Great Contributor to Firefighting

Each Olympic Games features athletes pushing the boundaries of human limits, but the Paris Olympics are
particularly notable in this regard. At the Paris Olympics, records were broken through group improvement rather
than individual breakthroughs. In the men's 10,000 meters, 13 athletes broke the record, with Joshua Cheptegei
winning in 26:43.14. The women's 400 meters final saw all nine athletes finish under 50 seconds.
The amazing purple track may account for that. The purple runway of the Paris Olympics is inspired by
lavender(薰衣草) fields in Provence, southern France. This color not only symbolizes the romance and elegance
of France, but also shows the natural scenery and cultural heritage of France.
The design concept and purpose of the purple runway is to bring a sense of freshness and a unique viewing
experience through non-traditional color selection. Alain Blondel, the head of athletics for the Paris Olympics,
noted that this design not only creates a strong visual contrast between the track and the spectators during
television broadcasts, highlighting the athletes, but also helps athletes perform better.
Purple is considered a cool color, which can create a sense of calm and stability. Unlike blue, another cool
color, purple also includes elements of red, a warm color that adds a sense of energy and expansion. This
combination of red's warmth and blue's coolness gives purple a balanced effect—it calms without being too soft,
helping to maintain a steady yet motivated emotional state.
This runway is not only eye-catching for its unique color, but also hides the secrets of high technology. The
runway is made of high-tech materials developed by Mondo, which have excellent durability and elasticity(弹性), and can provide the best competitive condition. Kipchoge, the marathon world record holder, praised the
impact and resilience of the runway. Track and field legend Carl Lewis also conducted a comprehensive test of the
runway. He believed that the runway can maintain stable performance in all climate conditions and that athletes all
over the world would love this track full of creativity and technology.
28.How does the author prove his point in the first paragraph?
A.By making comparisons. B.By analyzing causes.
C.By presenting opinions. D.By giving examples.
29.What contributes to the excellent performance of the Paris Olympians?
A.The unconventional color of the runway.
B.The beautiful scenery of France.
C.The romantic atmosphere in Paris.
D.The motivation of Olympic spirit.
30.What advantage does purple have according to the passage?
A.Creating a sense of calm and stability like blue.
B.Helping athletes to develop a balanced personality.
C.Having a stronger sense of energy in comparison with red.
D.Contributing to keeping a stable yet encouraged state.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The technological virtue of the purple track.
B.The outstanding performance of great athletes.
C.The promising future of the purple runway.
D.The overall quality tests on the new runway.

A team of AI researchers at Microsoft, working with colleagues from the Pacific Northwest National
Laboratory(PNNL), has used AI to develop a battery that uses less lithium(锂).
Lithium batteries have become the industry standard for electronic devices and electric vehicles and are
expected to play a major role in the change to green power. But lithium is expensive, which has led multiple teams
across the globe to look for alternatives. In this new effort, the research team looked for ways to reduce the
amount of lithium used in batteries.
This would normally take a long time because of the detailed approach required. To reduce the workload and
the time needed to process millions of alternatives, the researchers turned to AI. Noting that AI applications are
good at using massive amounts of data to learn how to do things, the researchers designed one that could study
millions of materials that might be added to a lithium battery to replace some amount of the lithium and test the
results for factors such as stability and how a battery using a given material would behave.
Using this__approach,__the research team reduced the list of possible alternatives to just a few hundred
possibilities. They then turned to materials scientists at PNNL for advice on how to reduce the possibilities even
further. The scientists suggested adding more specific screening criteria and more testing rounds. After adopting
that advice, the team arrived at a promising alternative and an approach that involved replacing approximately half
of the lithium atoms in a battery with sodium(钠) atoms.
After using the new approach to build a working battery, the researchers found it had lower conductivity(导
电性) than needed—but they also believe that there is room for improvement. They plan to continue working on
the approach and the process they used to find their solution, which they suggest could eventually solve other
types of material processing problems.
32.Why did the research team want to develop a battery that uses less lithium?
A.To reduce carbon emissions.
B.To meet the industry standard.
C.To decrease the cost of a battery.
D.To generate electricity efficiently.
33.What do the underlined words “this approach” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Using AI to find possible materials.
B.Adding other materials to a battery.
C.Developing an application to collect data.
D.Replacing lithium in a battery with sodium.
34.How did the research team finally find a promising alternative?
A.By seeking funding from PNNL.
B.By asking experts for advice.
C.By turning to Microsoft for help.
D.By cooperating with other scientists.
35.What is the existing challenge with the new approach?
A.It is less effective than expected.
B.It costs too much time and money.C.It occupies too much room.
D.It processes at a lower speed.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Even before I reached the tent, I knew there would be trouble. My little brother Andy was following me, with
a sleeping bag, a flashlight, and his stuffed bear. My friends Wade and Brad thought Andy would ruin everything.
He would get scared in the middle of the night and have to be taken back to the house. They complained so much
that you'd think they were hospital patients instead of kids I'd invited for an outdoor sleepover.
Andy promised that he wouldn't ruin anything. He wormed his way into the tent and settled in the far corner.
Night was closing in, too, with the woods around us fading toward black. The house, with its porch light, seemed a
long way from us.
“Time for ghost stories!” Brad announced as soon as I'd closed the tent. He told a story about
vampires(吸血鬼), but it only made us fall over laughing. When it was Wade's turn, he told a
story of three guys who were camping in a tent. He described our situation exactly—except for Andy. When
he was describing a terrifying creature, somewhere outside, a branch snapped(咔嚓折断). The hair on my arms
shot straight up. “These guys were crawling into their sleeping bags, right,” Wade continued, “when out of
the darkness rang this terrible cry.”And out of the woods behind us there was a cry, high-pitched, frightening,
and strange! The hair on my head shot straight up!
“What was that?” Brad asked as the cry came again. We all looked at each other in horror, speechless.
Wade suggested someone should go out to check but no one dared. “What if it's something trapped or hurt?”
Andy said anxiously. We focused our flashlights on Andy, whom we'd forgotten, sitting in the corner with his
arms around his bear. Andy would adopt every lost or hurt animal in the world if Mom would let him.
