When Ben Cheng, 63,finished a bicycle journey along the ancient Silk Road in June,she
immediately began planning her next trip.Ben was a teacher who comes from Changchun,Jilin province.
She has cycled more than 100,000 kilometers over the last eight years.
"I have kept up all kinds of sports, such as swimming and mountain climbing, for many years,"she
said.“After retirement(退休)，I had more time for my interests. and I found cycling to be a good
choice.”
She began cycling in the Changchun suburbs(郊区) in 2013 after her retirement. In May 2015,she
started her first long journey—a trip around Bohai Bay. It took her 24 days to complete the2,655-
kilometer trip, and the success pushed her to do more.
In recent years, she has finished several long journeys across China, including a ride around Qinghai
Lake in Qinghai province and other trips in Hainan province and Taiwan.
Together with several other cycling lovers,Ben started the ancient Silk Road journey from Xi'an,
Shaanxi province, on May 21. She crossed the cities of Lanzhou, Wuwei,Jiuquan,Dunhuang and
Jiayuguan in Gansu province and finally arrived in Urumqi,Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region(自治区)，
on June 18.
“During the 3,000-km journey,I enjoyed the beautiful scenery(景色）,”she said.“However,Ialso
met difficulties, such as storms and terrible road conditions.”
"Luckily,I kept on and finally reached my journey's end”she said."I hope more people will take
cycling as an exercise. It is more friendly to environment.”

If a visitor to the Nanjing Building in Shanghai opens a window and reaches out to take a photo
of the area,safety worker Fan Tianyu will receive an immediate alarm on a smart bracelet. He then will

At the start of 2021, Shanghai became the first city in China to sign a document covering the
development of its digital transformation(数字化转型）.The bracelet is part of a smart system being used
in the building to monitor safety risks. For example, when the flow of passers-by(人流量) on Nanjing
Road reaches medium-risk level, the urban management center lets out a"large passenger flow warning"to
shops. And the building's smart system sends a notice to the safety manager.
The system uses a range of high technologies, including big data, 5G, and Internet of Things. It
monitors the building for visitor flow,fire prevention, noise levels, and use of elevators. The system
produces reports that are like 24-hour health checkups for the building.
Xu Huili, deputy director of the center, said,“The city,which is a window for the world to see
China,is a pioneer in promoting(推动)the urban digital transformation.It is also trying to improve digital
urban management,which helps improve governance capability(能力)in big cities and finally does good to
local people.”
